Let me explain what happens when all 4 judges slap their buttons. Diana sings a Russian folk song, and folklore is a very conservative genre, because folklore is much about old traditions which need to be cherished. But Diana uses yodeling elements in her vocals, which are NOT a part of the Russian tradition. The classic yodel is usual in Southern Germany or Switzerland. Most likely, at first, the judges are simply shocked. Diana breaks the canonical tradition, and no one can pass by without noticing that. But Diana uses the yodel extremely accurately, in a dosed manner (and in a modified, not classic form) - to convey the drama of the situation in the song (I feel that in this place the heroine is crying, perhaps this can be called 'an internal cry'). This is so appropriate and convincing that the judges are unanimous.

Rechenka is an old Russian Folksong. This is an old ritual song about an orphan bride. The girl has no parents. The river was considered the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. She goes to the river and asks for the blessing of marriage. She says that there are many people at home, but there is no father and mother. You hear Diana singing in a whisper. These are the words of the deceased mother of the bride. Then the girl is crying. In Russia, at weddings they sang sad songs to scare away evil and the marriage of a young couple was to be happy. Such songs were called ·weeping.· The figures behind Diana are spirits of water and forest. she is an orphan being given away in marriage to the unloved. She is asking for blessings from her deceased mother for a marriage that will not be a happy one. The children in the yard are playing and laughing, but wondering why the girl is so sad; they are not celebrating. In the boat she is going to her wedding with resignation towards a sad life. Not true. The line where Diana whispers is translated as "Why are you sitting there [then for the whisper, she says .. ] and not smiling?" She's talking about her baby (some say it's her brother, but that is not in the song), not her mother. Only thing in the song about her mother is she says she has no parents. She doesn't mention her mother at all. Her baby is sitting there and not smiling. Why? Doesn't say.

You can easily see how deep in the zone she gets and emotionally involved in her performance. For Diana it’s not just about singing, it’s also about the total performance. She like Dimash and Hua Chenyu can not be put in a box or compared to anyone else. They are all just incredibly unique. If you have not checked out Hua Chenyu... you so need to. He is another brilliant artist from China. One minute he sings ballads, one minute he is rocking out, the next minute he is rapping, the next minute it is a theatrical performance that has you crying your eyes out. Asia & BJ, Diana Ankudinova was born on May 31, 2003, and on May 30, 2024 she will be 21 years old. This performance of Rechenka was video recorded on May 12, 2018, when Diana was only 14 years old and a contestant on a vocal competition called “You Are Super”. Diana’s performance had many vocal professionals saying Diana was already showing a low, deep, and rich sound, plus her stage presence was well beyond what most other 14 year old girls were capable of doing. During this May 12, 2018 performance of Rechenka on “You Are Super”, people were curious about Diana’s low voice. The tone, the deep and resonant quality of her voice had many asking about her vocal range, so I found the following information; the year previous to this competition, in 2017 when she was 13, and a year before the “You Are Super” competition took place, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5 which put her firmly as an Alto voice type, but I could find no single performance used for this first measurement of Diana’s vocal range, and it is low for a 13 year old girl. Diana did not have her vocal range checked again until her appearance on a 9 week vocal competition called “ShowMaskGoOn” that premiered on September 25, 2021. Now, back to 2018 and Diana’s “You Are Super”, “Rechenka” performance. Her voice is noticeably deep, round, full and dark with a tone quality that is mature beyond her years. Many vocal professionals were speculating based on this Rechenka performance along with video taped concert performances that Diana Ankudinova could be a true Contralto voice type in the making. She also had very good vocal and breath control for a 14 year old. Her musicality was noticed by many vocal and stage performance professionals. Questions were being asked, and one of the most asked questions was, how does she do it? How can such a young female singer achieve those low, rich, deep, profound, and resonant sounds? Without actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing those low notes to actually see what is happening within her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is simply attributing Diana's ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning she was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds, (vocal cords), appear to be longer and thicker than the majority of female singers. Her larynx (voice box) also appears to be larger than the majority of female singers, and her pharynx (throat) similarly appears to be longer than other female singers, plus she has a large oral cavity, (mouth opening). But there is more that just being born with unique vocal anatomy, Diana knows how to use it. It’s in her musicality and stage presence. It is in her ability to step into a character on stage and assume that character. It’s Diana’s ability to capture an audience, not just sing them a song, and actually communicate with the audience on a personal level. Diana Ankudinova also sang these 3 additional cover songs you should really listen to during the 2018 season competition of “You Are Super”. I liked how you described it as chanting. All part of the mystical woodland creature feeling with mother Earth that draws you in. I have often heard Diana described as the personification of Mother Earth. This becomes even more true in her own original song "Into The Skies", which is very beautiful. The chanting as you said... Here she is really using her yodeling skills. Yodeling involves repeated and rapid changes of pitch between the low-pitch chest register (or "chest voice") and the high-pitch head register or falsetto. It has been part of traditional singing in many countries. Diana masters both the high notes as well as the very low, also shown when she does that slide from high to low. God help you if you took a detour into the peat bogs! - what a shame I'm not closer to you, I always loved digging out stuff from mud!...... :))) Seriously tho, mud means miserable. The song rechenka or little river, is a Russian folk song, even before Christianity, that an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about the fact that my mother, father and brothers were killed by the enemies, there is no one to take care of her.
