Mark Knopfler Lead guitar Hal Lindes Rhythm guitar John Illsey Bass guitar Terry Williams Drums Alan Clark Keys And for these shows 22/23 July 1983 guest keys Tommy Mandel. The lead guitar and singer Mark Knopfler wandered into a South London pub (bar) in the 1970s where a mediocre band were playing. At the end of the evening as the pub was about to close one of the band stepped up to the microphone and said we are the Sultans of Swing. He wrote the song from there.

Basically Sultans of Swing they are singing about are a band called Sultans of Swing or king of swing music

My favourite band ever and my second favourite performance by them, Telegraph road from the same concert is even better. I saw them just the once around 1991 still the best live show I ever saw.

The song is about a band dire Straits lead singer watched perform and he found them amusing, the bands name was Sultans of Swing.

You could say Sultans of Swing means the kings of swing music. Mark was watching a Trad Jazz Band in a near empty Pub who were not very good. The lead of the band at the end says "We are the Sultans of Swing" Mark wrote they weren't the Sultans of anything".

The head and writsbands were not accessories for the look...Mark Knopfler couldn't care less about looks and fashion. He wore them coz it became too hot on stage and he was sweating so much he almost couldn't play anymore...so he came up with the head and writsbands. The band in this song called themselves the Sultans of Swing, when they actually couldn't be more farther from that...Mark and his mates came across this band by chance one day...hearing how bad they were... inspired him to write this song...with a bit of a wink to the "Sultans of Swing"....
