I was born in 64, so I prefer this version because I grew up with this, both versions are great. She wanted to leave the Porter Waggoner show but he wouldn't let there after 5 years so she wrote this song and he agreed to let her leave but later sued her, I think they settled. Then later on he was going broke like in the 90's so she bought all his rights to his records for million dollars, then gave them back to him, even after he had sued her. Then as he died she sang this song to him at his beside. Dolly is a special lady. Pssttt, shes worth 500 Million Dollars. Elvis wanted to sing this song but he demanded to own half the song and Dolly told him, HELL NO. She made 10 million of the Whitney Version. She's smart.

If you ever get a chance, you should read some quotes from Dolly Parton. She's hilarious, smart, insightful and caring. Some of my favourites: "Find out who you are and do it on purpose." "I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb... and I also know that I'm not blonde." "I was the first woman to burn my bra- it took the fire department four days to put it out." "After Momma gave birth to twelve of us kids, we put her up on a pedestal. It was mostly to keep Daddy away from her." "I think everyone should be with who they love." "Never leave a rhinestone unturned." "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap." "If you see somebody without a smile, give 'em yours!"

Doll wrote this as a love letter to Porter Wagner ( the guy in the clip). She was leaving a backup role on his tv show to pursue her own stardom. He trashed her after this and sued her once his ratings tanked. He won rights to the songs they made together. Years later Porter fell on hard times and went bankrupt. Dolly bought their song catalog out of bankruptcy and gifted it to him so he could get back on his feet. When Porter was dying Dolly paid his medical bills and visited him. She sang this song to him as he died. Dolly is a very special lady.

This reactor gets it... Dolly’s version perfectly expresses the emotion of the song. Which makes perfect sense, because these were HER emotions as she wrote this song about leaving her friend. The tenderness of her feelings is there. Whitney has an unbelivable voice which is showcased in her version, but the connection to the the words isn’t the same. She is powerful and stirring and makes it her own... but the tenderness of the feelings isn’t there in the same way, most noticably during the chorus “And IIIIIIIIIII will always love youuuuuu.” Great performance nonetheless.

Dolly wrote in her autobiography that she met Whitney Houston after she had covered the song. Dolly is known for being kind and down-to-earth and she congratulated Whitney on the song. Whitney was "not at her best" (leave it at that) and she rudely answered her "oh, you mean MY song...who are YOU?" Dolly then said she graciously left it at that but then she made a point of the fact, in the book, "That was fine by me. I still get royalty checks every time she sings it." Dolly is still going strong and worth hundreds of millions. Speaks for itself.

Interesting, David and Whitney used Linda Ronstadt's 1975 recording as the templated to Houstons recording. I have been told by ppl in the business, that the arrangements are the same and that they just played with the melody line. Anyway when Dolly found out that they were using Linda's recording, she called David on the phone to give him the final verse of the song, which Linda has not included in her version.

Yeah, Dolly wears her heart on her sleeve, yes she wrote the song for Porter because she was leaving his show. She sings from the heart and from her upbringing and life challenges. She's had a very successful career because she gives back. She started her career in the 60s and is still going strong and still giving from her heart. Dolly is well loved by all.

Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagner after her 5 year contract was up and she was leaving the show.. She poured her heart and soul into the song... Seeing her sing it on the show for the first time was amazing..

Dolly wrote this song and had a hit with it. A few years later she was in a movie with Burt Reynols called. The Biggest Little Whorehouse in Texas, about the Chicken Ranch in La Grange TX. And that song was used and made a hit again. Later Of course Whitney Houston sang the song in the movie The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner, and it made a hit for the third time. When asked about Whitney Houston, Dolly said she loved her to death and just let the royalties roll in.

Yep, another great writing job by Dolly. She is very smart too. Not only did she make a lot of money on her song, but she got royalties from Whitney's cover version of the tune as well.

Anyone else feel like Dolly is singing this directly to them? I wish she had been my mother or my wife just to hear her sing like this to me and I knew it was for me. Pulls right on the heart strings.

It is effortless on her part. She was from a very poor, dirt poor family, and as soon as she could, she got out, banking everything on her talent. She's a pro. She's been through it and then some.

Dolly is a prolific songwriter and a great singer she also has the sweetest personality and great stage presence. She has never forgotten where she came from, and she does so much for the impoverished people of Appalachia. She’s a true legend and an American treasure. I will always love and admire her. ❤️

Yes, Dolly had gotten her start singing with a man named, Porter Waggoner, & when she decided to move on & become a solo artist, she wrote this song for him. Elvis Presley wanted to record it, but because his contract said that he would receive a percentage of the songwriting rights, & Dolly didn't want to share (her song, entirely, after all), she told him, regrettably, no.

Yes, Dolly has such a tenderness to how she sings this, because this was expressing very real emotions she felt upon leaving her friend to set out on her own. You recognized this same thing that I did upon hearing Dolly’s version (before I read the background of the song). It just FEELS so darn heartfelt, personal, authentic. Whitney’s version is an AMAZING showcase of talent, but the same tender connection to the words isn’t there the whole way through.

Dolly wrote this when she was leaving the "Porter Wagoner Show". He got her started and after 3 or 4 yrs. on the show she wrote this to show him how much she cared and thought of Porter before she left. And they were friends till his end..

After parting company Porter Wagoner fell on Hard Times many years later from a lot of partying and extravagant living. Dolly bought his music catalog. When he recovered enough and ask to buy it back, Dolly gave it back to him no charge. She is lovely in every way.

Dolly is a class act! She was raised dirt poor as one of 12 children, but never forgot her roots. She wrote I Will Always Love You as a way to say goodbye to Porter Wagner who gave her her first big break on his show. Years later, when Porter Wagner's song collection went up for sale, he didn't have the money to buy the rights, but Dolly did. She gave Porter back his songs. Please react to Coat of Many Colors. It is a true story song taken from Dolly's childhood and my favorite of all her work! Live is good, but studio version will give you chills!

Whitney for sure is amazing and I loved her! RIP. I knew the Dolly origional first because my dad listens to country music. I grew up with country in my house. When I was a kid my parents and I would watch her tv show. She ended every epidose with this song. Nobody can sing it like Dolly and be able to express her emotions. Yes she makes it look effortless but that is just because she has the most pure voice. She gets in the moment and her voice is just natural. She is also a very nice person. She loves people, loves life, just one of the most kind hearted people. Also amazing sense of humor!!!!! She is hilarious! This was from the year I was born 1974!
