Today, the suits make the music. Back then, the musicians made the music. It shows!

This song never fails to give me chills. It starts off with such quiet despair and moves into the release of pent-up rage, then resignation and relief. It's a whole journey just so beautifully and understatedly done.

Back in the day Elton was my favorite artist. I was in the US Navy in 1983 and some of my shipmates and I got to see him (with Quarterflash) at the Greek Theater at UC Berzerkley. Only $20 each😎 "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album was his masterpiece. Recommended Elton John rock song, "Saturday night's alright for fighting".

These are great lyrics, sung very sincerely by Elton, but also with his band at the top of their game (Nigel Olsson's drumming here is amazingly emotional here). The backing vocals are the band too. I'm not sure what you mean by 'clean' in the writing though...part of this is about being trapped in a suffocating relationship with a controlling partner, and having thoughts of suicide (Slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams/I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river). That's a bit dark. Note this song (and the entire album it comes from) is autobiographical. It's also the first album in music history to debut at #1.

The other half of their songwriting team, Bernie Taupin, wrote the lyrics and Elton John wrote the music. This was/is based on a true story. BTW the "Sugar Bear" was a British blues artist named Long John Baldry, who Elton credits with having saved his life when he was contemplating suicide. Tragedy was averted, and Elton lived on, to become the legend that he is today. Peace! ✌😎

I was wondering what your reaction would be when you heard the line, "Sugar Bear." You did not disappoint. Hahaha... Sugar Bear was one of Elton's long held friends, Long John Baldry, who helped him to realize that he could not marry a girl that he did not quite love and to get back to his music. Elton had actually tried to commit suicide by sticking his head in the oven. But forgot to close the windows and lived. His parents came the next "morning with a truck to take me home." (It was actually a van). - Flash forwards a few years, 2020 actually, and this same girl had a major surgery she had to get done. Elton paid for it. He did love her. But in his own way. She still calls him Reg.

Elton John has so many hits...but I love this one! Thanks for reacting to it. I saw him once with Eric Clapton at Shea Stadium in the summer of 1992. It was an awesome show.

The writing is brilliant. The softness hides the utter sarcasm. The butterfly is a sarcastic way to describe the protagonist who is trying to control him

This is one of Bernie Taupin's (Elton's writing partner) best songs. He wrote most of the lyrics and Elton writes most of the music.

Elton writes all the music. From his 550 songs, he has only 3 songs from somebody else in his 50 albums and those were the well-known hits, he only made covers of those songs. And this is Elton's song and Bernie's words. Words are not a song. Music is a song. I am writing this because Bernie calls himself a songwriter and many people think Bernie writes the songs and Elton sings only 😆

You picked the wrong lyric video. The song fades out like all the other fade outs. It does not end abruptly as it does here. By the way, the only thing Elton cannot do is write lyrics. BUT - he can take anyone else's lyrics and turn them into pure solid gold😮😊! After Lennon/McCartney, Elton John and Bernie Taupin are the second most successful song writing team in music history in the USA. Elton also has some excellent album cuts in addition to his greatest hits. Try his song called Blues For Baby And Me. You will like!!😊 You may not know that Elton John wrote the score to "The Lion King". Can You Feel The Love Tonight became the song of the year!

This was Bernie's take on how fortunate they all were Elton did not get married, he may have just become another working stiff. Of course who knows, he may have still made it. The were broke as hell.
