Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind (Live at Montreux 1975)
• Etta James - I'd Rathe...
Etta James made many appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival across her long and distinguished career from her first concert in 1975 through to her last in 2008.
This video focuses on the concert from 1975. It features many of her best loved tracks and songs that she is particularly associated with. Etta James was one of the most respected performers of her generation. In a career stretching over 60 years she was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame and the Blues Hall Of Fame, won 3 Grammys and received many more nominations and was named Female Blues Artist Of The Year on no less than 14 occasions.
hola! hope you guys enjoy this song. it is the G.O.A.T. OF MOTOWN MUSIC ETTA JAMES. i LOVE HOW POWERFUL HER VOICE IS. BUT LISTENING TO HER MUSIC TAKES ME BACK TO MY EARLY YEARS BECAUSE I WAS RAISED MOSTLY BY MY GRANDPARENTS SO THEY LISTENED TO "OLDER MUSIC." i DO HAVE A QUESTION THO, WHEN SHE BELTS OUT CERTAIN VERSES, AS PROFESSIONAL SINGERS, HOW HARD IS IT TO DO WHAT SHE DID? WHEN SHE IS JUST BELTING OUT W/O A MICROPHONE. WHEN YOU SEE THE WHOLE VIDEO YOU WILL KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. AS A NON SINGER I FIGURE IT WOULD BE VERY DIFFCULT. SO I WANNA KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT WOULD BE TO DO WHAT SHE DID IN THIS VIDEO. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR FEEDBACK AND TO YOUR GUY'S REACTION. i WISH YOU GUYS NOTHING BUT LOVE AND POSITIVE ENERGY

Etta was in a league of her own, she was one of the VERY VERY best ever. It always makes me a little sad when so many people act as if "At Last" was her be all and end all song, it makes me think it must be the only song of hers they've heard her sing. Everything Etta ever did, she did well, and made it her own.

Etta was in a league of her own. This is the only song that she wrote and sang. I was lucky to see her perform in the early 2000's and she absolutely interacted with the audience. In fact, when she did this song she found a young handsome man near the front and flirted with him the entire song. It was amazing.

This is one of those songs covered by many artists, but with one definitive version head and shoulders above the rest. Others include Rainy Night In Georgia by Brook Benton, despite a fantastic cover by Randy Crawford, with even the original writer and singer Tony Joe White admitting Brook ''s version was incredible.

Written by Ellington jordan , etta james , Billy Foster. although it's believed that foster who was married or partner of etta james was credited just for tax reasons apparently a common practice . Ellington jordan was in prison and etta james on a visit helped her write the song . chris stapleton used the music from this song for his song tennesie whisky .and he used the lyrics of the original tennesie whisky written by dean dillion and Linda Hargrave.

@@lovebeiber101 did you even listen to it? But your statement just makes it that much more impressive. For a kid to be able to sit down and sound the way she does without the age and life experience is unique. It's very obvious a 12-year-old isn't going to have the experience side of it, so I'm not really sure what your point really was.

Considering this time frame is the peak of her heroin, coke and alcohol addiction, and by her own account performed nightly smacked up and drunk out of her mind, makes this performance a little bittersweet. She's using performance gimmicks to cover for what she felt were sub par vocal chops that she always relied on before performing wasted every night. I do feel there are stronger versions of her doing this song older and sober. Particularly with Dr. John as a duet with the male's viewpoint of the situation.

This is not Etta's best performance, but still is great. Her earlier work is soul/blues personified. Some comments have suggested you check out Angelina Jordan's version at age 12. Angelina is a big fan of Etta and has a great live cover of "At Last" from 2015 and a great live cover of "Something's Got a Hold On Me" from 2017. Angelina turns 18 in 3 days (January 10, 2024).
