This was my parent's generation music. I was a kid (probably less than 10) the first time I heard this song and didn't know jack about life, but when I heard this record, I knew the lady singing the song wasn't just singing a song. She sounded like she was living what she was singing.

She was a giant in singing the blues and in soul music. This song "I'D Rather Go Blind" (1968). Was composed by Ellington Jordan with lyrics by Billy Foster. Her greatest hit though, and her claim to fame internationally was her multi-platinum song "At Last" )1960). It became her signature song, and her cover is the one that is used in many movies and television commercials. The song "At Last" first came out in 1941 done by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. And in 1942 the movie "Orchestra Wives" with the Glenn Miller orchestra and Glenn Miller himself. Acted and played this song in the movie. They added lyrics to the music, and it was sung in the movie by Mr. Ray Eberle & Ms. Pat Friday. The rest as they say is history.

Etta James was an American singer who performed in various genres, including blues, R&B, soul, rock & roll, jazz & gospel in the 50's-80's. She had an amazing powerful voice. She had so many hits such as "The Wallflower", "Tell Mama", "Something's Got A Hold On Me", "I'd Rather Go Blind", "If I Can't Have You", "Spoonful", "All I Could Do Was Cry", "My Dearest Darling", "I Just Want to Make Love to You", "A Sunday Kind of Love", "Fool That I Am", "Don't Cry Baby", "Losers Weepers", "I Found A Love" etc. In 1961, Etta James released what was to become her signature song, "At Last".

Etta didn’t care for her either. I don’t know if that was always her opinion, but it was definitely her opinion after Beyoncé was invited to perform Etta’s song for the Obama inauguration instead of Etta. Etta thought it disrespectful since she was still alive.

I'm a 71 yr old white guy. I enjoy watching your reactions to music with heart and soul. It's still made but hard to find in pop or country today. Listen to Etta James "At Last"" which Obama had Bionce sing at his inauguration party. Etta had every right to feel jilted. She earned and commanded that song. It is both a love song and a song of overcoming segregation which she, not Bionce, was a part of.

That's a perfect example of why many of us 40+ prefer listening to music from back in the day. Song from the 50s to the end of the 80s were filled with depth, poetry, creativity and emotion. Most songs these days lack many of those elements , in my opinion.

I know all these songs from my mom and aunts. I don't know how people don't know their parents music . Maybe a lot of parents didn't listen to music back then . My parents used to dance around the house on Saturdays ,they went out to clubs, bingo, military bases had dances. My Dad made us laugh so hard. I Know from watching these videos he got his moves from Elvis. My older sister's music ,late 60s and 70s. My brother and I moved all the furniture out of the way to learn dances from American Band Stand ,right after that Soul Train. Saturday around our house was our favorite day. We had the mid morning ,my parents had the evening. I even know hip hop and rap because of my kids . I guess some people don't make music a priority. It's such an everyday gift it keeps you young at ❤️ heart , relieves stress. Just like dancing keeps you healthy and young. The memories that music keeps for you. Good times you'll always remember. Oh and Saturday cartoons we had the Jackson 5, The monkeys, Donny Osmond, The partridge family. I feel so blessed that I didn't miss any music. My grandpa played the organ, fiddle, guitar, harmonica. Church music and Bluegrass. My Dad played the guitar, harmonica, his music was Hank Williams, Charlie Pride ,Buck Owens, Glen Campbell, old country music

Erta was my favorite bad girl. No one could make you feel a song deep in your soul like Etta could. I was privileged to be sitting front row here in Vegas when she did her last tour. Even after suffering so much due to leukemia and extensive hospital stays she was a joy to see perform. She still portrayed that bad girl image even as she sang from her chair. I felt blessed to be in the same room with her when she sang "At Last." She was truly a national treasure and I'm crying now.
