I am a US veteran. I lost my family and drank and drugged my pains away. I spent a time living out of my truck. I o got drunk one night and flipped out. I got arrested and a similar thing happened to me. The cop that arrested me had been in country and my unit relived his so he could go home. He spent the whole night with me in the ER as he didn't take me to jail. He then took me to the VA to get help. I'm 100% disabled now. That covers everything from Dr visits, my meds help finding shelter and lots of other things. I now have a van and a dog to keep me company as most my friends left me and good for that as they were the ones I dinking and getting high with. I got a job helping people now and really got into history and have a side gig with a museum. Thank you to that officer that cared about me enough to not send me away. I'm not a criminal, just a victim of circumstance that just needed help and a direction to go. Thank you for reacting to this song. Much love

What's interesting is that in Europe, the Netherlands where I live, people ask me why in the world I joined the army voluntarily. And when I talk to Americans, they tell me thank you for your service. Ex infantry recon platoon btw and this video hits home for me. Support 5fdp and veteran organisations if you can.

Marine Veteran here, All services, we are all brothers in arms, we all bleed red. This video makes one think of just where you stand when returning from combat. A couple years ago I stopped at a store, bought myself a bottle of water and bag of beef jerky. A half mile down the road I passed a disheveled man holding a cardboard sign (don't recall what the sign said), but he had on a military style jacket. I turned around to go give him my bottle of water and jerky. I don't tell this story to brag or be "virtuous" because it was the best I could do for the man. I tell it because he begged me to get out of the truck so he could thank and hug me. Said he spent time in Iraq. It still chokes me up today wishing I could have done more for him. I'll never forget that man and his face.

"Wrong side of heaven, righteous side of hell" is the argument Vets have in their minds... you sign up to serve, do what is right, and sometimes you don't, or the things you end up doing maybe you question. It's a balance. Are you on the righteous side for what you did out there, or is what you did.. not? I've always considered it a play on emotions and thought process's, it differs from Veteran to Veteran.

Glad you reacted to this. I get my medical care through the Veterans Administration and they do their best with what they're given or most do. It's the lack of funds and personnel that hurts. Also needing mental health care still comes with a stigma, I'm asking as someone who has received care that if a person needs care support them.

Find out how they lie to us about federal money. What they do is PRETEND there is not enough money so the corruption scammers can then con us about taking it over and improving it. The scam is that when they take over they can get basically unlimited government money. You have vets from 2 wars, three police actions and countless skirmishes. Here in the US and the brother's in arms in the UK... Many go, not understanding what their country is asking of them. The words on the page stating that 'I swear that I will abide by my duty up to and including forfeiting my life in the defense of my country'... are just words. I'll come home. I'll be fine. And they sign. Then they train, then they learn to think like a solider to be in your Military Mind. You go out and do things no human should ever have to do to another human. You see things you can't unsee. You come home and are told to get on with life. To get over it. You have the person you married use your military service against you to take your kids from you in their best interest. You have dreams and flashbacks. You hear a sound... a car backfiring, fireworks, some stupid video game, and you're back in it. People look at you like you crazy. They don'y understand. You are called a War Monger at colleges, and have your application turned down because of your views. Politicians call you unstable because you had the desire to serve. You are told you can't own a weapon because you know how to use it and are unsafe. That my dear is what this song is about. How can we do what we have to do and be on the Wrong side of Heaven? Iraq vet here 08-09 Sadr city Iraq. “Wrong side of heaven” to me seems to be the dichotomy between fighting for what’s right (your country, other nations and peoples) sacrificing your life for others a “heavenly pursuit” that requires the soldier to do something so violent and evil on its own, (killing others). In other words doing something bad to achieve an ultimate good. I believe this to be his view of himself in societal perspective. The righteous side of hell” I believe to be from an internal view of himself and that struggle. Basically the same dichotomy but in reverse. His struggle or “hell that he has to go through for doing such bad things to help achieve a “righteous goal” or for “righteous” reasons. In other words doing bad to achieve an ultimate good is putting him in a state of hell internally.

I have a couple family members that were in Iraq One joind after 9/11 he has S.T.P.D. I seen him run to his bedroom one night because of fireworks were going off out side Though that was the only time I seen this happen,it was a reminder of what our men and women go through and it's all for love of country and fighting to keep our rights has humans. Current Canadian Army Infantryman here; I just wanted to say if anyone needs help don't feel ashamed to get help; I had a lot friends pass away and I've almost come to that point myself after getting beat nearly to the end point by a large group of folks but shit gets brighter at the end of the tunnel if you push yourself to get help. For me (Army 1990-1998 - Gulf war vet) "Wrong side of Heaven" to me means that, on a religious aspect, thou shall not kill .... but we are taught to do as our government asks, which is the "Righteous side of Hell". Conflict does infect our brains after, which explains the % of suicide among vets. Most days are good, but some are hard to deal with. (Signed - still here and working on it)

As many have said, it means a lot to those of us who have served, especially given the issues this song raises: PTSD, mental health, divorce, homelessness. These things are things, I feel, those of who served, and are serving, deal with more than those who don't. The sad truth is, these issues don't get enough attention -- especially for those who sacrifice for others, and some of whom make the ultimate sacrifice, so others can live free. All I can say is, on behalf of all vets and active-duty, reserve, and inactive service-members: Thank you. Thank you, so much. What you have done is very much greatly appreciated. 💗 Note: Since you asked, what this song is about is the struggle of a soldier or Marine, in trying to do what they know to be right, and when their service is over, having to deal with other issues because of it. It is something I would not wish on my worst enemy, and it is a hard road to hoe. The "Heaven or Hell," "God and the Devil" metaphor is really a metaphor for "good vs evil," and the soldier or Marine trying to come to terms with, as I said, what they know to be right, while others call them evil, cruel, inhumane, unjust, or outright immoral. Because of these things, a lot of veterans feel that those in the civilian population will never understand the sacrifices of those who do serve, and those that have served.

I was fortunate enough to find the help I needed. I am still in the Marines and almost slipped into a deep depression to that very point. It's hard to understand the feeling of taking someone's life even in the time of war it still doesn't sit well. Understanding that it was them or me it was still someone's brother father husband son that I took the lives of. It's still hard to think of that. Way too many veterans can't get the help I did. People look at the signs of these vets asking for help and don't just roll up your windows or walk by them. These men and women have given up their freedom for you and for us still serving. Sometimes all it takes is someone to listen to them

I decided to see your reaction to this video/song after watching your reaction to Josh Turner. I spent 9 years in the US Air Force. I joined in 2002, and was sent to Italy as a 19 year old in 2003. I was deployed to Iraq and landed there on my 20th birthday in Feb 2004 in Baghdad. I remember mortars, artillery, and return fire. I was lucky enough to never be involved in a gunfight, but the mortars still haunt me to this day. Wrong side of heaven....I was willing to fight for what I believed in and for the people I left behind, even if it meant crossing lines I never thought possible. Righteous side of hell.....I knew my fight and my brothers and sisters fight was just, even when others didn't, but I would never let it get too far out of control. I remember getting back from Iraq, to Italy, watching families reunite....and then standing there, by myself as a 20 year old, with noone around to welcome me back like my coworkers had. I also remember A1C Holt that never made it back either. I remember the mortars. I remember everything. FFDP does a damn good job of bringing our message to the front with songs like this and others, and not just ours, but also their own message of their own struggles.

I've been fortunate enough to be able to start to build my life again over the last couple of years but every day is a struggle. Again, thank you for your heartfelt reaction to such an important song. "You saved my life, Brother" will always get me. That's real. The statistics have only gotten worse. there are many more homeless vets on the streets and the number of veteran suicides has about doubled to about 1 per hour. this has to stop

Just some random thoughts, I was an Army Airborne Ranger. Fought in 2 different parts of the world. I never u understood 'weakness' for the longest time; "Suck it up and drive on!" Is the motto. Your family tells you that you are different, your not the same person. Civilians seem so weak and un-disciplined. It takes awhile to conform to societal 'norms' but you feel like you are always suppressing a big part of you. You learn to deal with the thoughts and dreams; Better they die for their cause than I die for mine, right? As Stan Counts commented earlier, done to many bad things to go to heaven but not evil enough for hell... I never achieved all I wanted to and should have. Thought about mercenary work, French foreign legion etc. but could not could not square that with God...but does it matter? Thank you to all the brothers in arms for your service to our country & very Un-grateful countries around the globe.

I joined the US Air Force with the hopes that I could rectify many of the things that I wished I could have. What I later understood is that I was the only one who could change that. However, I learned honor and dignity for what I did. This is not a metaphor. When you do things, due to orders, that are unspeakable, you hold them in. It's why so many veterans suffer from PTS and wind up unable to live in a normal society. I was in a group of all races, religion and belief. I came home to something different. One thing I will say, the more talent you posses, the less chance you have to be a "normal" human being. I have a loving family that has not wavered through my struggles and have helped me immensely , I am blessed. Though i have struggled with addiction. depression and other social issues, I am still here and proud to have served. I know I did things that I can only hope God will forgive me for, but if I go to hell I hope I'm in a place where I can be held in regard for the things I did. I will leave it in His hands.

At the end the guy in the suit is the Jacoby guy from earlier in the video that got shot and the guy sitting down is the guy that grabbed him and got him up when they were in that firefight. He's saying it's Jacoby you saved my life brother. Its heavy to see them when they were in the military versus what happens to them when they get back to civilian life. Its true and that makes it so much more upsetting.

As a veteran it is shameful how we treat veterans in this country. Like disposable toys that have outlived their usefulness. People here like to "thank" us for our service. It is a largely meaningless gesture that makes them feel good and move on while many of us struggle horrifically with the lasting effects of what our country asked of us. I don't blame them for it, it such a systemic issue that all they can really do is say thanks.

Thank you for your reaction. I am a combat vet that almost became one of those statistics until I was able to get help for my PTSD. I have heard soldiers refer to God as a she because they believe a woman may be more merciful. On the wrong side of heaven because it is a sin to kill, righteous side of hell because God has said in the bible that killing in self defense is not what is meant by thou shall not kill. I become emotional every time I hear this song. Seeing my Brothers and Sisters going thru this after all the sacrifice they have made. I was also a police officer after I got out and the tattoo showed they were in the same unit. They may not have known each other when they were in but they are still Brothers and the office instead of arresting him is going to get him help. Did you read the black guys lips. He told him who he was and stated you saved my life brother.
