Here's a trippy little anecdote regarding this song. I was a sophomore at Stanford when the tune was released. And ever since that date, this is the song the Stanford band plays whenever the football team scores a touchdown or kicks a field goal. It's essentially become a rolicking school anthem. Crazy, eh?

Paul Rodgers did indeed become the lead singer for Bad Company and he toured with Queen as their lead singer for 4 years after Freddie Mercury's passing. He also has solo albums that are great! Paul Kossoff was 1 of the crop of premier late 60's/early '70's UK guitarists and original burst users, along with Clapton, Beck, Page, Taylor, & Green. This is for all those Steve Perry Fans…Paul Rodgers was and still is the the greatest vocalist in Rock History….Steve was great with Journey….but hasn’t done much since his departure…Rodgers has fronted Free, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, The Firm and Queen…then he went back to Bad Company in his later years…I saw him live in 2019 just before the pandemic was a reality in the World…they were loud and he was still vocally as good as he ever was…

Bad Co was my band , yes Paul Rogers & drummer Simon Kirk went on to Bad Co along with Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hopple , bassist Boz Burrell from King Crimson The band Free was Paul Rogers. Vocal/ guitar Simon Kirt. Drums Paul Kossoff. Guitar Andy Frazer. Bass. They started putting out records basically when they were teenagers Unfortunately guitarist Paul Kossoff had substance abuse issues, and bassist Andy Fraser, who was one of the main songwriters was unsatisfied with the direction of the band Songs like “Easy on my Soul” - “Fire & Water” - “Mr Big “ - “ Wishing Well”

I’ve always liked the dual mics for lead singer. Left and right channel? Result is badass whatever the intent. I saw these guys in a very small room around 1972. Wild as hell. They liked to have blown the place apart! Even, or maybe especially, Paul Rodgers knows every one of them nailed their part. We are so lucky to have this recording all these years later.

You are correct- After finishing a US tour, Free split up after a last concert in London in 1971- I was there- Royal Albert Hall. By 1972 some of the members formed part of Bad Company- which was considered a super group at the time. A great song by free is The Hunter which was great live and appears on the Free Live album 1971 and has a great atmosphere. There is an Isle Of Wight version but it is not well recorded. No video available.

Hey Steve from Ned in Spain. I'm an old fan of these groundbreaking heavy hitters. Paul Rogers is one of the greatest frontmen, Simon is still a slammin drummer, guitarist Paul Kossoff was the king of slow burn with a vicious vibrato but a fatal drug habit and secret weapon Andy Fraser on bass who was like 15 or 16 when he joined Free and co wrote a lot of their songs. The song Mr Big from this same concert features Andy and is a killer. For me their first 3 and their 5th LP are the best Tons of Sobs, S/T, Fire and Water, Live. " The Hunter" from Live will blow top of your head off. They were a big influence on Ronnie Van Zandt and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

They left a whole verse out after the solo Breakdown. You need to hear the studio version. This live version is good too, but do your ears a favor and listen to the studio version also. If I’m not mistaken, They come out of the solo Breakdown different with another verse. I think they cut this one short for time. Good job on the review. You’re picking some good ones.

Paul Rodgers, the singer and Simon Kirke the drummer formed Bad Company and invited former Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs to join them. Mick was unhappy with Mott the Hoople's transition from blues based to more of glam band. Bad Company eventually brought in King Crimson's bassist Boz Burrell to join Bad Company even through they were not really fans of King Crimson (a prog band). Peter Grant the Led Zeppelin manager signed them as the first band on Zeppelin's Swan Song label. More Free songs you should check out are Fire and Water, Wishing Well, The Stealer, Songs of Yesterday and many more.

Great to see somebody reviewing this band. Our favourite back in the day when I was a kid. Unfortunately they didn't last too long but they did produce some great music. Every one of them were fantastic in their role and the band was always noted for the exceptionally strong base line which, considering Andy Fraser's age at the time, was something. In my late (very late) sixties I still listen to them. Paul Rogers did go off and found Bad Company along with Simon Kirke the drummer. Lately Rogers did do some stuff with Queen. My Favourite is "Mr Big". Listen out for the Bass solo. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4WUd2N3g55ghqc

By the way Andy Fraser is not playing harmonics but he is way up the neck near the join to get the high octaves on that beautiful Gibson EB-3. He was a unique funky tasty rock solid player who played short punchy notes. Sadly died a few years ago, which was a damn shame. All the best Steve and more Free pleeezzz

Perhaps live versions don't get banned by KZbin as often as the studio versions do.

What’s up and thanks for swinging by! I tend to do both live versions and studio versions BUT you are right in that studio versions are unfortunately more likely to get blocked.
