The song is his prayer, and asking to be free of birth is asking to be free from reincarnation and remain in the spiritual world. A beautiful song! ♥

Exactly! In Hari Krishna, we are reincarnated until we reach spiritual enlightenment here. We keep coming back until we get it right. When we do get it right, we ascend to nirvana and are free from rebirth. My favorite line is "Help me cope with this heavy load, trying to touch and reach you with heart and soul."

I have always understood the line - keep me free from birth - as a Hindu belief that when a soul reaches a certain level of understanding or detachment from this world, a high level of spirituality - then they are freed from the cycle of re-incarnation on earth. George spent time in India and a lot of his music is influenced by the instruments from around the globe.

Yes, that's it. George is directing this song to his Higher Self (and God/Divinity within) to live a spiritual life, and ensure he doesn't need to return and be reborn on the earthly plane, but ascend to a higher realm after he eventually passes.
@thomastimlin1724 Жыл бұрын
It would seem the majority of people don't know the " free from birth" line as a Hindu spiritual reference and would automatically think he meant birth control or something. Because they won't look it up. So it's good you all clear that up here. I could just hear some from the USA Bible Belt and elsewhere screaming "He singing about abortion...that heathen!" Sigh....

Love the Beatles, in fact George is a distant cousin. Like many people of the 50s and 60s it was common in our house to listen to the Beatles. Jump to the 80s and I meet my soon to be husband, he LOVED George, I didn't say anything. A few years later we go to a family reunion and people break out instruments and sing some Beatles songs, hubby is into it. I say, while we are here, we need to stop at the cemetery so I can "check on the family" and there are Many Harrison's buried there. Hubby mentions jokingly, maybe that's where your cousins get there talent from. My sister and I look at him and say " ya think" and couldn't stop laughing at him when it hit him.

I had "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" on a 45 single that was left behind by older siblings and I played it a lot along with the flip side "Miss O'Dell". You might also want to check out the concert for Bangla Desh which was one of the first ever big rock shows for charity. Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, and Bob Dylan all were participants as well as the group Badfinger.

This is one of my top favorite songs ever recorded, from my favorite Beatle for the loving message, the simple construction, but most especially from the sincerity of the delivery.. it gets me every time. I think I suggested this one in the comments a long time back (when you were asking for more “hippy” type “peace and love” type tunes, and so glad to see y’all giving it a listen, though I’m not too certain you ever even saw my comment (as I can’t imagine the amount of time it would require to read through all of the comments we leave). 😮 It’s really cool to see that seed you had planted eventually come to fruition, regardless of whether it was your comment, or anyone else’s. 🤷 There’s plenty of great George Harrison tunes, and I concur with all the suggestions I’ve seen being made in the comments here. Since we’re sowing seeds down here, I’d suggest another great “peace and love” track from Elvis Costello called “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?”.
