When the song says they placed a wreath upon his door and soon they'll carry him away, that was meaning carry him to his grave, that's why the song begins, he said I'll love you til I die" and when they say "first time I seen him smile in years" because he could never smile when be was alive because he didn't have her anymore

Ashley , there are many interpretations of music but in the case of first time I'd seen him smile in years it is generally considered that this means the smile the mortician puts on your face in the casket. He hadn't smiled for years missing her. We all here things different ways. Actually you are just fine in your thoughts also.

@@GaryBarlow-js3ph yea I understand what you're saying, I grew up on this song. When i was younger every morning I'd wake up to hearing my grandfather's Cajun French music, then at night it was George, Conway, hank, the whole gang!

The song has always broken my heart. The only way he can get over a woman who stopped loving him was to die. Complete Lyrics: He said, "I'll love you til I die" She told him, "You'll forget in time" As the years went slowly by She still preyed upon his mind He kept her picture on his wall Went half crazy now and then But he still loved her through it all Hoping she'd come back again He kept some letters by his bed Dated 1962 He had underlined in red Every single 'I love you' I went to see him just today Oh but I didn't see no tears All dressed up to go away First time I'd seen him smile in years [Chorus] He stopped loving her today They placed a wreath upon his door And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today

George didn't write this song. He didn't even want to record it, but his label talked him into it. As for Taylor Swift, please! She is nowhere near George Jones. Comparing them is like comparing a tricycle to a Harley-Davidson. He was a legend. He inspired generations of country singers. He was a pillar of country music. His career began in the 50s. In the 90s and after the turn of the century, new country artists asked him to be in their videos and on their albums. There will never be another George Jones.

George Jones is a legend..... Sadly, I think you were being overwhelmed with the facts about George's life presented on screen to process the lyrics..... The song is not about his life..... It is about a friend..... "He said I'll Love you till I die,..... She said You'll forget in time"....... = She divorced him, He was still in love with her, "He Stopped Loving her today...... All Dressed up to go Away.... They Hung a Wreath upon his Door" = He Died, "She came to see him one last time" = She attended the Wake or Funeral..... "He Stopped Loving her Today"...= HE kept his wedding vows of till death do us part, and loverd her till he died.....

Unfortunately, you missed the whole story that's laid out in the song. But you're not alone. Nearly every non-country fan who reacts to this song misses the whole point of the song. Here's what you need to know about country music if you're gonna react to country songs. This is key: For the most part, Country songs are ALL ABOUT THE LYRICS. Country songs tell stories and the songwriter only has 3 to 4 minutes to tell the entire story. Therefore, EVERY word counts. Good country songwriters are masters at condensing entire thoughts into a few words to paint a picture of what's happening in the story. In this story, the narrator (George Jones) starts right out of the gate by saying "He said I'll love you 'til I die." That's a clue right there that he's talking about what some other man said. The other man is his old friend. If you pay attention to the lyrics in the rest of the song, you'll discover that his friend has passed away. The narrator tells us that he (the narrator himself) went to his friend's funeral. That's why he said his friend was "all dressed up to go away." His friend was lying in an open coffin. How do we know it was an open coffin? We know because the narrator told us he "didn't see no tears" and he told us it was the "first time he'd seen him (his friend) smile in years". That's also why he says, "...soon they'll carry him away." So this is how his lovesick friend stopped loving the woman who had left him years earlier. This refers us back to the opening lines: "He said I'll love you 'till I die." And that is, indeed, what his friend did. His friend loved the woman until he died. By the way, the line that goes, "...the placed a wreath upon his door" is a reference to an old custom (mostly in the deep South, I think) whereby a wreath is placed on the front door of a deceased person.

As someone else pointed out, the first and last lines summarize the entire story; "He said "l'll love you til I die" and "He stopped loving her today". That's the entire story; all the rest is just details along the way.

Many ppl thought this was about Tammy Wynette.. his wife .. 2x.. tammy divorced him once for his drinking.. married him again.. divorced him again.. Tammy passed b4 George and when he came out with this song (b4 she passed) many thought this was a song about her.. they both denied it as far as I remember.. I was very young at the time.. I just remember my parents telling me this

There are many good singers from the past. Charley Pride, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Sr. Expand your knowledge of music and your understanding will be increased. (When you feel up to it, try Opera, especially Luciano Pavarotti.) If you have never heard Mahalia Jackson (a Gospel great) then you are missing out big time.

My son is 14 now, but when he was younger he said "mom I want you to hear a song that reminds me of pop" which is my dad, my sons father was never in his life and my dad taught my son everything he knows, my son has so much love from us, and always will, he started playing "my old man" by Zac brown band, my dad is a very hard worker that always had to struggle, but is the best and does whatever it takes for his family, when I heard those words from that song, I couldn't hold back the tears, I love my baby boys ♥! There were people at my house and I hate to cry in front of anyone, but it broke me.

A bit of the back story- when they started recording this song, Jones life was pretty much a shambles. He was drinking very heavily, getting a reputation for not showing up, or showing up drunk etc He ABSOLUTELY hated this song, he made the comment that no one would listen to that morbid POS. Took the producer a year and a half to get it completed It became his signature song, and led him to a resurrection of his career

Often, songs such as this are written about common themes, not necessarily strictly personally biographical. Songs can be stories that people can relate to or sympathize with. The song isn't biographical George. It very probably was written by someone else but his interpretation is what captures our imagination and/or heart.

You needed to listen to the whole song and pay attention to the story. You kept stopping and talking about insignificant things that didn't have anything to do with the story that George was singing about. And therefore, you completely missed the point. Bad reaction video. You were too goofy and didn't take it seriously. a bit immature. Sadly, your attention span was very poor.

Taylor Swift isn't even near the catagory of singer George Jones was in. George Jones was a geat Country singer, along with Ray Price & Merele Haggard and many others........Taylor Swift might have started in the country genre, but she never was a good country music singer, It was good that she went to the pop music, because that does suit her well. A few real country singers are left. Gene Watson,Willie Nelson , Ronnie Milsap, Hank williams Jr. Dolly Parton, Rhonda Vincent

You need to actually pay attention to the lyrics in the song. The very first line he sings tells you the story of the song. It’s like sitting here watching you totally miss the point, as the story goes “whoosh” right over your head. Still like your reactions, but if you’re going to react to, actually listen to what he’s saying in the words.
