I love this song. I have a hard time watching the video because the hate depicted makes me angry and sad. I know there is a lot of intolerance in this world but it is wrong to hate someone because of their sexual preferences, their skin color, their religious beliefs, their gender. Basically it is wrong to hate anyone. So much intolerance in the world today. It is sad.

Ironically enough my father used this song as a way to break me cause I came out as trans. He had never watched the video and he preaches about being godly. If you listen to his words he speaks truth. I think you should check out “Cherry Wine” that’s one you have to prepare for. Also “In a Week” my favorite love song

"Take Me To Church's" 2013 music video, which criticized the repression of gay people in Russia. Hozier explained the song's meaning to The Cut: "Sexuality, and sexual orientation - regardless of orientation - is just natural," he said. "An act of sex is one of the most human things. But an organization like the church, say, through its doctrine, would undermine humanity by successfully teaching shame about sexual orientation - that it is sinful, or that it offends God. The song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love." Hozier added that the song is not an attack on faith. "Coming from Ireland, obviously, there's a bit of a cultural hangover from the influence of the church. You've got a lot of people walking around with a heavy weight in their hearts and a disappointment, and that s--t carries from generation to generation," he explained. "So the song is just about that - it's an assertion of self, reclaiming humanity back for something that is the most natural and worthwhile. Electing, in this case a female, to choose a love who is worth loving." Hozier's parents had been brought up as Catholics but it wasn't an experience they wanted to pass on to their children. Instead, the singer and his brother were raised as Quakers. "There's a simplicity," he told magazine about the denomination. "There is no priests, there is no service - no middle man."

But before people like me there were so many persecuted and continue to be in the year 2021. This is why the lgbtq+ community are such strong allies to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Though nothing compares to 400+ years of abuse my lgbtq+ community has also for decades been abused by the man. We together can change the world and that’s why I requested this reaction. This sort of thing is happening in Eastern Europe now, but it wasn't that long ago that it was happening in America. Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay when I was in 8th grade, right as I was coming to terms with the fact that I experience same sex attraction. It took me another 10 years before I was comfortable enough to tell anyone that I was bisexual. To me, away from the video, this song is less about individual violence and more about religious (specifically Catholic) neglect and the more subtle violence of refusing to accept a person as they are. The singer is rejecting the faith that has rejected them and is choosing instead to follow their lover.

The church has betrayed his confession of homosexuality, told he was born Sick and refuses absolution. The "She" he speaks of represents the straight female sex the church will accept. The box holds the secrets of his homosexuality which he buries but it gets out anyway. He is persecuted and denied the basic need of every human being. Loving and being loved. I weep for them.

Hozier mentions a she in the lyrics, to broaden his audience I'm sure. However, he used a gay couple and far-right gangs in the video. Recorded in black and white for a more compelling and graphic impact, (NO color to misinterpret) it just doesn't get any more powerful than this. (Black and white are not colors, they're shades or neutrals ~ they have absolutely nothing in common, complete opposites of one another and both fight for dominance) The video portrays an era when anti-gay propaganda laws were relevant, evoking prejudice and hatred. When homosexuality was viewed similarly to the sexual sins of beastiality and pedophilia; not negating religious organizations that would undermine the human experience of sexuality. If you don't feel SOMETHING while watching this video, check for a pulse!
