Hozier said in an interview that he was frustrated with the Catholic Church. He grew up in a Protestant Quaker family and saw the Catholic Church as dominating the social and political outlook of the Irish State. He said that he saw the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church when growing up. "The history speaks for itself and I grew incredibly frustrated and angry. I essentially just put that into my words."
