I have been watching, and enjoying, this young man's reaction to so many songs from my youth. These are the songs I grew up with, and while the songs are still wonderful, what doesn't translate is how James Brown, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, and so forth changed the world. Before this music came along, we had Patti Page singing How Much for that Doggie in the Window" and then we had Elvis, Chuck Berry and Bob Dylan. The world changed.

James Brown is one of the GOATs, among the best Singers we've ever had, certainly a fore-father of Rap and Hip-Hop, and a Soul/Funk pioneer. "Prisoner of Love" is one of the sweetest melodies you'll ever hear, and the "Funky Drummer" has one of the most sampled Drum beats in history. There's alot of music to investigate here.

A number of James Browns backing band left and joined George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic, most notably bass guru Bootsy Collins. You should listen to some Parliament I would recommend, "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" "Mothership Connection (Star Child)" "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" "Flashlight" or "Dr. Funkenstein" you will see the evolution from James Browns R&B/Soul to George Clinton's Funk which then evolved into rap/hip hop.

You really need to react to this song again with a video of him singing and dancing. Man had the MOVEZ! (Depending on video blockage, of course.) He was often backed up by his dancers, The Fabulous Flames (every guy - yes, guy) was a fabulous dancer. My favorite part of his act was - and he did this with different songs - was when he’d pretend to be SO EXHAUSTED he couldn’t go on, one of his people would come out on stage with his long cape and wrap it around James Brown’s shoulders, acting like he was going to help James off stage. - AND THEN, and then, Janes would THROW OFF the cape and start dancing and/or singing like a man possessed. - James Brown was a heck of a showman! If you can react to one of those videos without it being blocked, it is definitely a spectacular show to hear AND see!
