Jim Croce’s Photographs and Memories was the first album I ever purchased, after hearing Time in a Bottle played a lot by the local radio station near the summer camp I went to. That was in the seventies. Great to see young music fans into this type of music.

@Louis Perlman Operator was the song that got me hook, line, and sinker for Croce. That song alone introduced me to this whole genre of incredible musicians and writers. Van Morrison is another that can hypnotize you with his great voice and music.

She wrote it, he recorded it. But then, I'm sure others have already told you that, if you didn't already know it. I just want to say this; Goddamn! That still hits me right smack in the brain pleasure center of the thirteen year-old that used to be me. It still rocks me back on my internal heels, and reminds me of the passions for all things relationship related that I was feeling for the first times when this song gave me words and music that seemed to be about things I was yearning to express, then. You're right. Great song, and this is a great performance.

James Taylor's first hit was Fire And Rain, which he wrote while dealing with a friend's suicide. In response, another friend wrote You've Got A Friend for JT. That friend was Carole King. James Taylor is among the GOATs of 70s music, & his song catalogue is long & very entertaining. His first, & longtime (now former) wife is Carly Simon, another great voice of the time. Two of her best song are That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be & You're So Vain. James & Carly did some things together, too. Their duet of Mockingbird is a classic you shouldn't miss! Carole King has been writing hit songs since the late 50s, with more than 100 of those songs making it onto the record charts, being performed by a wide variety of artists -- enough to keep you busy with reactions for probably a month or more. That list includes: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin Locomotion by Little Eva One Fine Day by The Chiffons Carole King songs were also recorded by Barbra Streisand & The Beatles, to name just 2, and Carole King is a voice you must let yourself hear. In 1971, she released her second album as a singer -- Tapestry -- & it's still considered by many to be one of the best albums of all time!! You would love her song, I Feel The Earth Move, from that LP. Actually, you'd probably love every song on Tapestry. She has lots more since then to showcase her incredible voice. Both James Taylor & Carole King are icons of the 70s, and their music, together, separately, with others & their songs being sung by others is an extremely entertaining rabbit hole you should jump into with a smile on your face & a song on your lips.

Carole's smash hits would fill an encyclopedia - she's written songs for everyone in rock 'n' roll. Her first album as a singer was a smash too - "Tapestry" contained the killer hits "It's Too Late", "So Far Away", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "I Feel the Earth Move". James' smash hits are eternal classics - "Fire and Rain", "You've Got a Friend", "Carolina on my Mind", "Shower the People", etc.

@@kristyb787 *grin* I taught my kids as they grew to listen to some good "old" songs. Tapestry is just one of the albums I played until they were singing along with it too! My babies are 41, 38, 31, and 29, the oldest has 2 of my grandkids 14 and 12, and my #3 daughter lives with me, she and her SO have a little girl going on 2. So I am blessed with a captive audience when I listen to and sing along with my music!

The thing is, if you know James and Carole’s work, you would hear the subtle ways that age is touching their voices in this performance. They are both amazing performers, and such geniuses with their vocal instruments that they are both playing to what remains strong about their voices while working around the encroaching weaknesses. I hear in this song, this performance a love letter and a preparation for farewell to each other as musicians, to the music that carried them all around the world, and to their fans.

James Taylor's "Fire & Rain" was written about an extremely low point in his life: the suicide of a friend (Suzanne), the breakup of his band (Flying Machine), depression & heroin addiction. In it he said, "I've seen lonely days when I could not find a friend." This was Carol's beautiful response.

James: "I don't remember anything for a year on either side of it (a reference to his heavy drug use) but I remember the first time I heard what may be the best pop song ever written. It was amazing. Of course, I didn't know at the time I'd be singing it every night for the rest of my life. But it's a great song to be known for." Carole: "I'll be the first to say it's a great song because I don't feel like I wrote it. I just sat down and it kind of came through me."

Their voices are so different now (they're in their 70s); actually, hers isn't that different, just a little fine-wine aged. He sounds very different, but still sweet and wonderful. Check out earlier duets (and individual) recordings of this by both of them for their peak vocals. But for sheer sentimentality, this is a great performance.

I'm sure someone has already made this comment, but Carole King wrote this song for James Taylor after one of Taylor's friends, Suzanne Schnerr, died by suicide. Taylor sang about Suzanne in his song "Fire and Rain," and when King heard it, she was moved to write this song. The version you just watched was recorded in 2010, about 40 years after it was written. You should check out Taylor and King's version from 1971! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJOqk3d9jZ2Smac

SUCH A TERRIBLE VERSION OF THE SONG. HE IS OK AT HIS CURRENT AGE, HOWEVER IN HIS PRIME HE WAS REMARKABLE. WHY YOU CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO THE MUSIC ARTIST AFTER THEY HAVE LOST THEIR PRIME ABILITIES IS SUCH A WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY. What you think is GOOD IS SUB STANDARD AND A BAD REPRESENTATION OF THE TRUE BEAUTY OF EACH ARTIST YOU HAVE DONE THIS WITH.
