As an old school heavy rock/metal fan, I think this showed Janet leaving her comfort zone and doing something new. The song is an absolute classic and some heavy rock/metal fans love it. take it from me I know. One very famous heavy metal vocalist loved that song and wanted to do a duet with Janet, but his record company said No. That person was Lemmy from Motorhead. (God rest his soul) 🤘

You really want to see her slay this song? I highly recommend you watch the live performance on the 1998 Velvet Rope tour! The video was in black and white so skin tones would be more gray, the tone of the album was racial harmony and the importance of education. You should definitely check out the long form version of the video. It will put everything into context.

When something is black and white it's to give the image a certain power, atmosphere,look or to help people with a story that has flash backs distinguish between the two.lots of reasons.in this video it was so you can see the dancing clearly and see how clean it was and concentrate on the lyrics.colour may have complicated it. Checkout Joseph Gordon Levitt performance of this on lip sync battle.

A little trivia for everyone. Back in Windows XP days, this song was crashing laptops. The song has a frequency present that caused a specific brand laptop hard drive to resonate and crash the computer. When they started trying to reproduce the issue they found it wasn't limited to the computer playing the video but any affected laptop near it. It's the same phenomenon that allows singers to break glass with their voices. The difference being, Janet's resonant frequency wouldn't break the drive, it was just enough to disrupt the disc to resonate between the heads and cause a crash. The laptop manufacturer actually began installing a frequency filter into systems using that hard drive to prevent the audio system from hitting the frequency. Ah, the good old days when manufacturers responded to complaints.

The reason the video is in black and white is that it's part of a longer movie that she made for this album that includes 3 songs from the Rhythm Nation album. There's a story that incorporates that lil black boy, Tyrin Turner (who later went on to be the lead in Menace II Society) that you see there. The video is powerful on its own, but when you see it in the context of the whole movie it's even more powerful. More Janet That's The Way Love Goes Nasty If You Want This Got Til It's Gone with Q-Tip Enjoy Island Life Runaway Literally any song from her Control, Rhythm Nation, janet.. and The Velvet Rope albums, if we're being honest. She's an icon and she's got dozens of great material.

Micheal was a perfectionist in every video, and he taught his sister, "If you are going to do something, do it right!" That is why Ciara, Beyonce and so many others make sure, or try to make sure their dance video's are tight...because they grew up watching Janet and Michael. Those are big shoes to fill. I would suggest you start at Janet's "Control" album and watch all the videos, and continue from there in order. Her dance skills, like Micheal's, are phenomenal! Enjoy Janet's videography and discography. Peace...Be and Stay Safe!

What gets lost in the Janet sphere is the "Rhythm Nation 1814" short fim that featured "Miss you much", "The knowledge" and of course "Rhythm Nation". Janet and Michael both were never afraid to tackle social issues. Check it out! Side note: glad you're safe and good!💜
@bdhu20012 жыл бұрын
Janet is the one who started the dancing for the girls who sing and Michael is the one who started the dancing for the guys who sing. Before that, you’d have people do a couple of be bop moves, but not full dance performance and singing. Before them, dancers danced and the singers song with dancing accompaniment. Movies with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers had singing and dancing. But everyone understood that some a lot of the vocals wasn’t by the actual actors.

She says in the beginning to "blur the color lines". I imagine that's why it's in black and white. Plus it's military inspired.. uniform colors & movements.

As an old school heavy rock/metal fan, I've been to many rock/metal gigs in my time. But I've also seen Janet Jackson during the Rhythm Nation world tour back in 1990. Not one of the rock/metal gigs that I have seen over the years even came close to matching the Rhythm Nation world tour. It was amazing, but more importantly the messages on the Rhythm Nation 1814 album is what you need to pay attention to. The legacy that this album left behind is important now as it was back then and it inspired a lot of people, I was one of them. I'd advise you to listen to it.

This was a top A+ album when it came out, completely loved worldwide, she was at her absolute peak of success for several years back then...I was listening to this entire album to death for so long back then, blasting it, could not get enough. And her "Control" album, same thing, played that album to death! You should check out her mv "IF", I went crazy when that mv came out...it supposedly takes place at an exclusive, private sex club in Chinatown, and she is provocatively singing about sex...tripped my mind! And check out her mv "SCREAM" with her bro Michael, it's kind of set in a futuristic space theme, it goes hard! Soo good! 💙🌺 But damn bro, this music was probably before YOU were born, no technology back then...
