This is about New York as it was the song in the closing credits for the cult classic 70's movie "The Warriors". A tale of a gang having to scrap their way home after a gang summit goes awry. I was a teenager when I saw it at the theater back in the day. We got baked and then went in. We thought it was great then. It's still fun to watch on occasion. You could do a reaction to it.

I saw the Eagles a little more than a decade ago. The show itself was outstanding; but what really surprised me was how phenomenal Joe Walsh was playing. I've seen lots of great guitarists live over the years (Vernon Reid, Mike Campbell, Eliot Easton, Buddy Guy, GE Smith, Steve Miller, Neil Young, etc.), but none of them shocked me in quite the same way Walsh did. He's a uniquely brilliant talent.

I saw the Eagles on the "Hell Freezes Over" tour in like 1995 in Memphis, TN which is where Joe had lived for years. 2 hours into one of the most incredible concerts I have ever witnessed in person, Mr. Walsh took over for the home crowd. It's kind of important to know where the artists' mind comes from. Joe Walsh originally was born in Kansas but lived a decent portion of his life in Columbus Ohio... so his 'city' experience comes from his life there. Cities come in 3 flavors. The vibrantly alive, the 'treading water/stagnant', and the decaying/dying. And cities go through cycles of these phases. I've seen New Orleans go through them all. Detroit too. So Joe's likely seeing his 'city' from a time when it was either stagnant or dying/decaying. Life in those times... in those kinds of cities, is hard for sure.

If I was going to classify this song, it's a rock song with a melancholy tone It tells how those from outside coming to the city have dreams they're trying to realize But when you're born in the city, you already know the harsh reality that so many more people in one place means that much more competition for everything, jobs, food, housing... Everything we struggle for in life has that many more hands reaching for it When you're born in the city, you're sure your dreams lie somewhere else...if you can only find a pathway out

Joe wrote this for the NY gang movie "The Warriors" which has become a cult classic. When it was first released around 1979, we went to see it every Saturday night at the midnight show and then to Shoney's or Denny's for 2:00am breakfast. The poster art is the actual Warrior's gang from the movie wearing their colors.

"Warriors .. Come out to play .. Warriors! Come out to plaay! .. Warriors!! Come out to plaaayaaa!!" What a great movie line from such a great iconic movie. My father was 83 when he passed away in Sept. 2015. The movie "Warriors" came out in 1979. I was a freshman in high school. My dad and I went to catch a double feature at the theater. We sat and watched "The Warriors" and Cheech & Chongs "Up in Smoke" that afternoon. I never saw my dad laugh so damn hard as I did thru "Up in Smoke". My father rarely drank alcohol let alone try smoking weed. Joe Walsh's "In the City" has to be one of my favorite Walsh/Eagles songs to this day. If ya want to tie a genre to it Asia .. You both are right. Its Rock, Soft Rock and Classic ... So, Classic Soft Rock.

my all time fav tune..from the moment I heard it at the end of The Warriors. But, it took a different meaning after working in a women's homeless shelter. Extreme cases of mental health, drug use, and trauma in most of the women. Abandoned by their families (rarely visited them) It wasn't Disneyland. Having some die from OD (fentanyl sucks) really showed at that point how fleeting their lives were. Now I can't help in this song, they've finally escaped the city to a better place.
