After hearing Joe Walsh - Life's Been Good 4 weeks ago... I decided it's time to hear more from Joe Walsh. We usually listen to a 2nd song by a band or person within 4 weeks of hearing them for the first time but as you will obviously have seen, I haven't been posting as often as usual. That will change from this point forward though! I know very little info about Joe Walsh other than he was in The Eagles (Another band that I need to listen more of). Rocky Mountain Way is one of those songs you didn't realise you needed to hear until you finally hear it. I now know for a fact that Rocky Mountain Way will be stuck in my head for the new few weeks.
Here is my reaction to hearing Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way for the first time. I hope you enjoy it!

I’m an old white lady. I usually listen to young black men, testing the waters of my music. I don’t think it’s racist. Just fun, to watch these young kids, that grew up on hip hop and rap, find out what a musician is. This UK kid is just as fun. I eat, drink, and sleep politics. I run to animal rescues and music to keep my sanity. These kids are so fun.

Joe Walsh is one of those artists that, even before he sings, is instantly recognizable as soon as you hear his guitar. He is rock but always with a big dose of boogie/funk. His beautiful slow songs are also great, proving he's not a one trick pony. An amazing musician...and always a lot of FUN to listen to.

It’s called a talk box. It takes the sound from the instrument (in this case a guitar, but it can be used with keyboards, harps, Banjo’s etc) and sends the sound through a tube yo the mouth. The player then changes the shape of his mouth to modulate the sound that is then picked up by the microphone. He is not actually singing, the sound is produced by the instrument.

Story time: The very first time I ever went to Colorado (where part of the Rockies are), I was visiting over 4th of July weekend and my friends stepmum from Australia was also in for a visit. Stepmum had been a huge Joe Walsh fan her whole life and one of her dreams was to smoke a joint in the Rocky Mountains while listening to this song - so we did! LOL We truly couldn’t get much hiiiiiiiiiigher. ❤❤❤❤

Interesting trivia: Joe's band, James Gang, were touring with Led Zeppelin when they first came to America. Joe sold his 1959 Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar to Jimmy Page. That is the iconic guitar that Jimmy played for Led Zeppelin's entire career.

In 1973 my dad bought the 45rpm of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way", . . . mistakenly. He wanted John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High". He then dropped " Rocky Mountain Way" into my (8F) stack of wax, . . . Marnie Nixon's "Mary Poppins" and Danny Kay's "Tubby the Tuba" were no longer heard in my world. The arm was open on Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" (that means it played on repeat) until he got me an album of the greatest electric guitar solos. I think it was called "Heavy Hands", . . . original artists, . . . it was awesome.

Love George Thoroghgood’s Bad to the Bone, I saw him open for John Fogerty (CCR) 2 weeks ago 8/30 at Thunder Valley. Sadly he doesn’t have it anymore. Even his signature song Bad to the Bone that he saved to finish his hour set was wasn’t good. Didn’t sound anything like the original. Audience was silent. It was sad 😞 John Fogerty hit it out of the park! Could have watched him all night.

What happened was Joe was cutting the grass on a riding lawn mower (??) at his place in Colorado (Rocky Mountains) when he got the idea for this song. He goes running inside the house but forgets to shut off the lawn mower, which kept going until it ran into the neighbors garden-- causing some damage. 😬. He used to ride a Harley out there in the 70's. But his main house is near Hollywood, with a built in recording studio....😂

Joe Walsh a member of The Eagles was using a "VoxBox" which is a tube devise placed in your mouth that is connected to an electric guitar or a piano...it was the version of "auto-tunes" back in the 60's, before auto-tunes was created. The VoxBox takes an XLR input from your Mic, runs it through a studio-quality mic pre-amp, then it sends it out a buffered effects from where you plugged. It provides an old fashion 1930's radio effect or 1930's speaking mike effect...The Beatles were one of the Rock bands to use this effect in their songs to create to the listeners a throwback 1930's nostagia atmosphere. The Beatles used it in their song, "Strawberry Fields Forever" to create a psychedelic effect to the listeners ear. It suppose to make you high by the sound of it without getting high!!! lol Everything back in my day was about getting "high" lol..Great reaction!!!

Joe Walsh is a deep dive. He was first heard with the James Gang in the late 60s. They were a 3 piece band out of northeast Ohio. After the James Gang, he formed Barnstorm then did some solo work. The Eagles came after that stretch. He continued to do solo work in between Eagles gigs. I'd suggest some James Gang. Others have mentioned Funk #49 but songs like The Bomber, Walk Away, Midnight Man, Bluebird (Buffalo Springfield cover), Take A Look Around are all excellent. From Barnstorm and solo work, I'd suggest Turn To Stone, Meadows, Welcome To The Club, Life Of Illusion, The Confessor, In The City (Eagles performed but it's Joes song), Analog Man. I've seen him in concert several times and he is outstanding. His guitar tone and his singing voice are unique. An all-time great artist.

The way a talkbox works is that you take a signal out of your guitar amplifier and you feed it into this little waterproof mic with a kind of short tube around it, and then you're standing in front of the microphone and singing, but you can either use your voice full to equally blend with the guitar sound coming from inside your mouth, or you can do nothing at all and let your mouth shape the sounds of the guitar solo coming through. You can whisper along to it, you can make growling animal noises and you can definitely try to mimic the guitar solo itself, and then you can also slip interesting words and phrases in there as well that blend back back into just the vocal sounds at the end of the phrase, and so forth. This is such a fun song, and it's a blast seeing you dig it so much.❤ But you are coordinating all that with playing a solo on your electric guitar at the same time. And really singing as well, and I do consider it both a singing solo and a guitar solo. But really it's a solo That shows mastery of the talk box.

James Gang Solo Eagles Joe played with the Eagles while he was a solo artist as well. so at least part of what you’re hearing is Joe Walsh‘s signature sound which I believe he called the attack and if you want to read more about it, you should but he’s a fascinating man and so incredibly talented just incredibly talented. The Eagles were so lucky to have them him because he really really filled the gap in that band and, not for nothing but he has incredible tone. His voice is very unique and really adds to their harmonies.

Joe came up through The James Gang and then was recruited to bring more guitar sound to the Eagles. His solo stuff and James Gang stuff is more funk rock, while the Eagles tends more to country rock, especially early days before Joe joined. Both are definitely worth their own separate rabbit holes.

I saw the Eagles in Vancouver. Joe had been in the band 6 months....maybe a year. 20,000 fans.....great show of course but when the opening chords of Rocky Mountain Way started up the crowd went NUTS!!! Glenn Frey had a HUGE grin on his face. :-)

That’s why I, and I’m sure you too, love to clearly hear all the instruments. Man it’s so cool how much talent was there. So many things going on, it’s just great music. You don’t get anything like that anymore.

When Joe Walsh joined the EAGLES he helped them go from smooth country sound that they had started with and move them to the rock side of music and make them the greatest American rock band ever!!! Check out Funk #49 when he was in the James Gang.

Back when a song would take twists and turns. You can tell this was the era of headphone music where you can get lost in all of the intricate sounds going on. Some songs of his that are a must to hear: Life of Illusion, The Confessor, Happy Ways. Then there’s all his stuff with the James Gang. Walk Away and the Bomber just for starters.

Good one! 🤩He's got the closing credit song for the 1979 movie, "The Warriors", called "In the City". That one is certainly worth a listen some day.

The Eagles were massive and Joe was part of the reason why, but he had been awesome before the Eagles and great after as well. Keep it up!

Got to see Joe play in Cleveland , Oh about the middle of the show he started talking about having grown up in the Cle area and how he had joined a gang...then the other members of the James Gang came out and did a 3-4 song set ( Funk 49 and walk away are the 2 that stood out ) that was something I was thrilled to see because I never thought I would...and too think Stevie Nicks ( Fleetwood Mac ). Called Joe the love of her life , this song was written right after they seperated because Joe wanted to give up partying lifestyle a little but she wasn't ready or able too...
