Fun fact: this song was a response to Neil Young's blistering condemnations of southern racism in his songs "Southern Man" and "Alabama." "Southern Man" in particular is a track I'd recommend you take a listen to. While you're at it, also check out Skynyrd's "That Smell" which is probably my favorite track from them. Both are songs with something to say.

It was a real beef, but it wasn’t Skynyrd defending racism as much as saying “hey Canadian, let us work this shit out without your help, eh?” Famously uninterested in being told what to do, whether to their detriment or not is another matter. I don’t think either band held the other personally responsible for what went down in the South and in this same song they make fun of the racist Governor and the trial of Nixon, so who knows! There's 3 guitarists on this album and, all very distinctive and all very capable. They are Ed King (actually from California) who plays Stratocaster, Gary Rosington who usually plays a Les Paul, and Allen Collins who usually plays a Gibson explorer which really adds to the overall texture as each guitar itself sounds different. Ed King left a couple of albums later and then they were a two guitar band for a short time, before adding backup singer Cassie Gains' brother Steve Gains who also favored a Stratocaster and added a 2nd lead vocal to the lineup. Steve, Cassie, lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt all died in a plane crash while all but one member were seriously injured. It should also be noted that Gary Rosington and Allen Collins were the guitarists on the first album and Ed King was the bassist before switching to guitar on the 2nd album.... Cheers 🍺😎🎸

They were brilliant. You’re just scratching the surface with Skynyrd. From this band’s lineup on this song, the only one who perished in the plane crash, is Ronnie Van Zant, the singer. After Ed King (one of three guitarist) left the band, Steve Gaines replaced him. Steve. And his sister, Cassie (backup singer) also died. So, three band members died and their manager. Most of the band members survived the crash.
