I am 63 year old white woman from Alabama. Yes, it wasn’t a big thing for whites and blacks to be together back in the 70’s. I am not sure how the younger generations have become so segregated but it is sad to see.

There aren’t really any bands… it’s all about marketing the artist and the artist alone. It’s not like X band that came together organically. They just sign the artist and set them up with their own session musicians and stuff.

For anyone born after the 80s I'll catch you up to speed. The 70s and 80s were decades of healing. People came together in music and film. But this caused politicians to lose their grip on the people because the divisions were beginning to disappear. Your skin color could not be weaponized to guarantee your vote. So the media and politicians went to work dividing people once again and it has worked like a charm.

Back in the 70's, we had blacks and whites playing no one cared. It was what it was. We all partied together in my town out skirts of Los Angeles. We just had fun!

I think it is a sad commentary on our society today that folks are surprised to see folks of different races in a band together. We never thought anything of it growing up in the 70's and 80's. It just shows how segregated our society is becoming these days. Everything that we fought for in the past is being undone.

It seemed like race, sexual preferences, gender identity, none of this stuff was a focus or issue in entertainment back then. I often wonder if it’s because I was a kid back then and just blind to those issues or if we’ve truly moved backwards. All I know is I had a ton of freedom in those days from playing outside safely anywhere I wanted without having to report home until dark to not worrying that I was going to offend someone with every word I spoke. I know times have changed because my daughter has not had the same privilege.

Back in the day, we all were together having fun. Bands were mixed. All this hate and division is part of a evil agenda to cause hate and destroy our society. We had a blast, blacks, whites, Mexicans, PRs, Cubans Asians. 70s preach love, soul and brotherhood. That's my memory.

Many bands in the 50s, 60s, 70s had mixed band members..Black, White, Hispanic, Santana...Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock 1969.. I graduated HS in 1978 - I vividly remember the wide bell - bottom pants that you could try on without taking your shoes off! Also, you had to have them long enough that the back edge just touched the floor and hid your shoes!! There were also pants called elephant ears that were even wider. Primarily women's pants. I remember flying to California at a time when you dressed up to fly anywhere. I had a pink "bodysuit" top with white "elephant ear" pants. I was 8 and thought I was so cool.

The Allman Brothers Band, a southern rock band, had 2 drummers, one white and one black. Jaimo played with them till they broke up just a few years ago. Nice guy.

Yes there were many bands in the late 60s and 70s of mixed skin tones. Skin did not matter to us. I'm 74 and white, most of my friends, close friends, were black and none of us lived in a ghetto, neither physically nor or minds. I named my second son after my best friend in the 70s and his wife, that the closeness we enjoyed. I cannot remember the names now but even in the 50s some bands were mixed. Music doesn't know anything about ethnics. Elvis had black ladies groups as back up singers. Little Eva had white back up singers.

The 70's were prolly one of the most interracial band era's ever... Still some bands like that in this day and age... But lots of bands from that era... Melding of genre's and music style... The music industry coming off the orchestra and big band era into the Rock & Roll era of the 50's into the 60's & 70's... MLK and I Have a Dream... Funk, blues, and old school rap into todays... But the music companies used to pay for talent[studio musicians] in those days and why they could assemble such a band as KC & the Sunshine Band... Among others like Earth Wind & Fire to name but one... Basically KC's band was joined by studio musicians... Who took a trip to Florida to climb on board... Basically the music industry companies cost cutting measures for stated old big band and orchestra talent waning and they took a trip to Florida and the new band caused a huge sensation and hit it big... In explaining cost cutting and talent not being utilized... Think of the bands of today where if they have 7 musicians in the band it takes hundreds of millions to go on tour... Why you see other bands with 5 or even like Rush 3 band members... ABBA had a big band for touring too... See??? The further the band stretched from the 70's into the 80's touring became almost unaffordable [as music industry publications wrote back then...] The music industry did all it could to keep the talent of the big band or orchestra trained era to remain employed through the 60's, 70's and 80's [as a outdated costly sound/large bands/era of the wall of sound [@PhilSpecter] that could make any band sound larger than it was... Like a orchestra... Rush the band gets credited with achieving the big band or wall of music sound with 3 members...] by giving them work on tv shows and in film soundtracks as well variety shows [example the Donny & Marie Show... ] Thats why variety tv was a big thing back in the day from the 50's through the 80's... Then there's the touring cost of the large band Eagles and the complaints of high ticket costs back in the 80's & 90's too... Remember all the ochestral songs Elvis [the King of Rock & Roll] sang and produced during his career??? The big band or orchestra era itself also was very interracial as well with talent from all kinds of Nations joining forces... The Jazz era and both whites and blacks playing it into the lead up into the big band sound era...

Yes there were some very famous bands that had mixed race bands. Check out Three Dog Night. Their hits Shambala, One, Never Been to Spain, Joy to the World, etc. Even a song called Black and White basically about race relations. This is probably one of the Sunshine Bands better songs. I associate them with That’s the Way( I Like It), one of their biggest hits. They were a pretty short lived group however. They were the early disco era. Lots of good dance music

Ah, the 1970's were great years for awesome music. KC & The Sunshine Band always had people dancing. I was 9 yrs old when this came out. It was huge, played constantly on the radio & everywhere you went - school dances, roller skating rinks, adult discos & bars, restaurants with jukeboxes, etc. While racism has always been around in this country, when it came to music, we didn't see color lines back then. Many groups had a diversity of members. It didn't matter what your ethnicity was, as long as you could play an instrument and/or could sing well, you were part of the band family. We didn't care if a band was all white, black, purple, blue, or a rainbow mix. Even if it wasn't you particular favorite genre of music, we still appreciated talent & how great it sounded whether it was rock, disco/pop, R&B/Soul, country, jazz/blues. I really miss those days...

I saw these guys (KC & The Sunshine Band) live at Disneyland LA in the summer of 1977 whilst on holiday from the UK = thank you Freddie Laker, also that day `Count Basie` was playing the piano on the walkways at Disney (within touching distance) = unreal when you think of it.

KC is one of my favorites from "back in the day", my younger years. I even have a T-Shirt with the words from one of his songs "That's the way I like It". Not only did they have the show, before the show started Elvis and his back up singers rode around on the feild waving at the fans... But yet some still say Elvis was a racist.. Check out, "Celebrate." The St. Louis Cardinals used it as "their" song when they won the 1982 World Series. It played everywhere in the STL area non-stop for weeks. KC and the Sunshine Band came to our Six Flags that year and I remember listening to them do "Celebrate" live while waiting in a long line for the nearby rollercoaster. Such nostalgia! Always a fun time with their music.

There are a lot of bands with black and white members, even today! One of my favorite hard rock bands, Killswitch Engage’s Howard Jones is the lead singer and he’s incredible! Gosh, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Slash of Guns and Roses, Bad Wolves just to name a few. Music has no color!

This song always reminds me of “Scary Movie”. As for the racial mix of musicians, there were quite a few during the 70’s. KC is one, David Bowie was another. Dan Hartman, Rick James and the Stone City Band and Ambrosia are some others.

I saw in concert a couple years ago. Three hours of fun. Many many hits. One thing that K C said was it's more like KFC now. It didn't stop him from going the whole time with no long intermission in the middle.
