Since retirement, we have been on a bucket list tour trying to catch up with some of these old greats. We had the pleasure of seeing KC and the Sunshine Band celebrating his 50th year this summer. The only two members playing were KC and the guy on the Bongos. The music was still fabulous to this date....KC (a bit older) can still move on stage. An added bonus were the openers.....Rose Royce band and the Dazz band. All the memories we relived that night! Side note: KC wrote a song called "Rock your Baby" that was performed by George McCrae. It was a big inspiration for ABBA's Dancing Queen. Enjoy!

The guys who put the band together were Harry Wayne Casey and Rick Finch. Rick Finch was a bassist/sound engineer who worked for TK Records, a Florida-based record label. KC worked there part time and that’s how they met. They added some musicians and the band was formed. Casey and Finch were the songwriters, and actually wrote songs that were hits for other artists. They wrote the song “Rock Your Baby” by George McCrae, which was one of the huge hits of early disco. The song “I Get Lifted” was originally on a KC & The Sunshine Band album, but McCrae covered that and it’s been sampled plenty of times. They also wrote a lot of things for Jimmy ‘Bo’ Horne. In the 70s they were killing it, but once disco faded their popularity waned. But they do have a lot of really good songs, and they were far more than just a run of the mill disco band.

This song is like a perfect amalgamation of soul, disco, and pop. The horns are killer, and somehow the vocals fit in so perfectly that if this came out now you might think AI constructed it. Absolutely made for radio, back when radio still mattered.

The line "that's the way, uh huh uh huh, I like it" became a thing when this came out. People were saying it everywhere, it was used as a joke punchline all the time, it was huge. Same with Shake your booty, Get down tonight and I'm your boogie man. They were massive in the 70's.

Casey = KC. A janitor at the studio. George McCrae was there to record Rock Your Baby. The manager was mad because the keyboard player didn't show. George said Casey can play it. That's him on George's hit song. That manager went to see Casey's band. The rest is history.

I remember watching "The Jeffersons" when Florence was vacuuming with headphones on, singing...."that's the way I like it..aha, aha." When George gave her a few quick knocks on the head which disengaged her headphones. She said, "Why, Mr. Jefferson would you want to do a thing like that???" George: "because/THAT'S the way I like it!"

The hairstyle was called an Afro. Men and women both wore them and many Black performers began to popularize them in the 70's. Some of those Afros were huge! Typically it was a wig (highly stylized) usually worn over a nylon skull cap (actual cut up panty hose were often used!) Different sized wigs were worn depending on preference. They were attached with plenty of bobby pins to the nylon skull cap. Even off stage, everywhere in public the guys wore such wigs. Along with bell bottom pants and wide lapels it made for quite the fashion statement for men. KC started in N. Miami and performed at both the Swinger Lounge at the Marco Polo hotel and the Castaways Wreck Bar - both extremely popular and influential arenas for musical talent in N. Miami Beach. This small area of the N. Miami Beach strip where these nightclubs operated had a huge impact in the 70's and 80's (although its heydey was really the 70's) and was a powerful draw for all the best performers of the era especially soul and disco music. (It later saw Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine skyrocket in the 80's.) It was a very unique period of the ongoing cultural revolution which was convulsing societal norms. Anyway, whenever KC appeared it was a guarantee sellout. Those boys were the epitome of disco along with the Commodores. Check out "Brick House" and other songs by the Commodores which along with KC's hits helped define the disco era.
