No Quarter was a Medieval times term for No Mercy during battles, I know it was said in Viking battles. The live version of this is really outstanding, FYI: Led Zeppelin did this song before Tool did. Yes it’s different for Led Zeppelin, but that’s the type of band they were, they preform many genres & this I’d say falls under Prog. I personally prefer Led Zeppelin’s version, & especially the live. Tool formed decades later, & I’m quite sure use all the enhancers etc. Led Zeppelin was all pure musical genius. Thanks for your reaction.

Military "Quarters" are Barracks where you live / sleep. The order "give no Quarter" literally means to give no shelter to the enemy, in other words "take no prisoners, kill everyone!" This order was made a War Crime but in ancient times if you didn't have enough resources or feared prisoners would attack you, or you were just evil then "give no quarter" was how you fought a battle.

Quarters are possessions, home. They have no port of call
@Degner2 ай бұрын
The term "No Quarter" comes from ancient combat. During a war/skirmish, it was considered chivalrous to allow for gentlemanly retreats so both sides could regroup and rest. This was called "Quartering". In certain situations when the enemies particularly hated each other, they would allow No Quarter during the combat, not stopping until one side was beaten. It also usually meant that no mercy would be shown if one side yielded.

I prefer the original however, in my opinion, Tool's is a well done, respectable cover. To my ear, Tool's sounds like it's coming from the cold, desolate, wastes of outer space, whereas the original sounds like its coming from interdimensional planes of existence. The original is very alluring, enticing, inviting and shiver inducing with hints of secretive promises.

Your comparing led zeppelins studio version of No quarter . To Tools version of No quarter. WRONG. Because Tools version of No quarter is more a cover of Led zeppelin MSG Live version . 2 different songs all together . Thats what made Led Zeppelin so unique

No Quarter symbolizes unwavering determination and courage. The title is derived from the military practice of showing no mercy to a vanquished opponent, and the lyrics suggest a mission or purpose that must be carried out under challenging circumstances. "No quarter" is a pirate phrase meaning "no mercy." It could also refer to the US Revolutionary War when Great Britain enforced a policy requiring colonial Americans to house British soldiers and offer them food and a bed during the cold of winter. If this policy was refused to a British soldier, this "No Quarter" policy allowed the British soldier to invoke severe punishment (death, sometimes) on the American who refused him. This was only one of the many ways in which Britain attempted to legitimize their treatment of Americans in their effort to interrupt their recapture of the colonies.
@stegwise2 ай бұрын
specifically it means no prisoners, as in we shall not quarter prisoners and therefore will execute them, and is therefore synonymous with showing no mercy.
@Ledzepnut2 ай бұрын
The difference between the two songs, Tool takes a Zeppelin song and makes it sound like a kick ass Tool song, Zeppelin writes one of the best songs ever, and it doesn't sound like any other Zeppelin song. Tools music sounds very similar to each other, you can tell it's them, it has that Tool sound, but don't get me wrong, they have some great music, however with Zeppelin, this song was released in '73, there was no other song that sounded anything like it, with the passion and/or emotion that Zeppelin has in their music, it is on a completely different level. The Tool version may be harder hitting and more current, but if you listen to the live Zeppelin version from '73 MSG, there is no comparison
