I’m glad I caught this my fellow night owl! Great hearing Level 42 again! These both bring me back to when they came out….I used to listen to them a lot. I always love Mark’s bass and vocals along with Mike’s piano and vocals! Many more from them to hear down the road.

When you get to Level 42 again, I recommend a real fun song “You Can’t Blame Louis”…..just another great song from them. Also, if you’d check my comment from Enigma the other day, I’ve got a suggestion in it for you.

Leaving me now is Beautifully Crafted both inside and outside! Passion and Musicianship that simply for the most part is non-existant today! A thought provoking and sensual mind blowing tune that really causes you to examine the best and worst of the human spirit in this True Masterpiece!

What is still unbelivable is playing those Bass Lines live and singing at the same time. Easier when playing Guitar but Bass? Great Band.

If you like this... you should have... could have and should BE a musician. They are tier 1 musicans. This music isn't something you dismiss if you have an ear. I remember hearing them first thinking they were shallow... then re-listening... then putting them on the listening list when we mellowed out by the beach at sunset... and remembering. Just the best...

L42 is a band of substance and decent production, ohh... that bass, especially on Lying. Happy times! Another band of similar ilk is China Crisis. They have a good discography, and I'd recommend starting with Working with Fire & Steel, the title track, and The Soul Awakening from the same album. Both tunes are incredible and offer a solid juxtaposition. If you havent reacted to them yet, I sense they might be well viewed. Gratitude always! 🪷

So happy you came back to Level 42, Brandon. 🎼All songs répertoire are gems I assure you, never deceived you will be. Exceptional crafted music in every tiny corner in all their areas from 1980 until, there they were particularly magic with this line up, beautiful keyboards (Synclavier, Yamaha DX7, PPG wave) by Mike Lindup, and voices also by Mark King, an the the brothers Gould. It was an awesome artistic story, many forget usually the involvement of Mr. Wally Badarou, keyboards and production. Have a nice day 😎!

Leaving Me Now has one of the best endings to a tune I’ve ever come across. The band were unstoppable in the 1980s and Marks technique on bass was exceptional. Great review. All the best. Dave✅✅

I really loved your reaction to these gems Brandon! You literally covered every aspect of these amazing songs. It is really so impressive that you pick up so much from a 1st listen! The only thing I can add is that World Machine is a phenomenally good album. At this point, Level 42 could do no wrong. Mark's skill on the bass is always mentioned, but I liked how you drew attention to his fantastic vocals. And I concur that Mike Lindup's backing vocals are amazing and compliment Mark's so well.

Great reaction and break down of two of their heartbreaking songs! Leaving me now is one of my all time favorites of theirs. That piano at the end just echos the emptiness you feel after a love lost. It didn’t hurt that I was wearing this record out when my HS girlfriend broke up with me. It’s Over from the album Running in the family is cut of the same cloth as these masterpieces. Thank you for reacting to them!

@@retroreactions.... oh yeah…. I Do like Broken Wings. And I like everything about Kyrie except the chorus. The beginning is so “majestic” almost…reminds me of U2 whereas the chorus brings it down from its soaring to a common/sounding melody. Just my opinion of course. Gorgeous vocals. Why weren’t they bigger? Were they just TOO “pretty”? And thanks for the links! 😁

Wow! So glad you're reviewing Level 42 so favourably Brandon. They were The Beatles producer George Martin's band of choice to feature in the UK's Princes Trust concerts in the 80's. After 4 decades, I still listen regularly to Staring At The Sun - a mini masterpiece. Also well worth a review are: Tracie, Running In the Family, Lessons In Love, Heaven In My Hands and Two Hearts Collide. Happy Listening!
