When rappers could still sound tough without cursing every other word. This was skilled rapping.
@lonewolf36s

back when every word mattered. Not nonsensical brrrrrtttt noises and bird chirps.. The rhymes were slower paced, like at least double slow. But they had POWER and serious strength. I'd say it's a different kind of intelligence comparing the two. We have some crazy skilled rappers today, but the value of words is lost and replaced with beat, tempo, catchy repeated sfx, and catchy slang phrases like "no cap". Lyrical vs Imperical. I miss lyrical.

i see rap today like hair metal of the 80s, basically rap became so popular that rap became watered down. now all we do is wait until another genre of music to take over for a bit and the cycle continues.

"i didnt know LL Cool J could rap like this" SMH,,I know Jayvee is young and of course he wouldn't know much about LL but still that's wild just hearing that because LL is one of the greatest rappers of al time.He actually is the first rapper to use the label G.O.A.T.. For those like me who grew up on LL, we all know he always come hard. And LL is a master at diss records. Jack the Ripper comes to mind and "The Breakthrough" You need to check out IMO his best song ever "Im Bad" A lyrical master piece.

You gotta give it to LL, he had some serious longevity as a rapper. The chanting throughout the song is a sample of a "Sly & The Family Stone" song & he said that he got the idea from when he was complaining to his grandmother about people saying that he was washed up. Her response was "You just got to knock em all out." He also was continuing his beef with Kool Moe Dee when he said "How you like me now!"

When L.L. started his rap career in the 80s he found himself with a worthy rival, a rapper named Kool Moe Dee. The two exchanged diss tracks back and forth with no clear victor until L.L. dropped this track. It was the biggest hit of L.L.'s career and it ended Kool Moe Dee's career instantly. When L.L. says the line, "How you like me now?", he was referring to Kool Moe Dee's last diss track. This was the old school rap rivalry for the ages.

He didn't end Moe's career though... Kool Moe Dee, who had been calling LL to a live battle which he never engaged in, had commented:"I always said that the reason LL can never win a battle is because he talks so much about himself - that he can't talk about anything else. He used his charisma, energy and vocabulary, which is basically a combination of my style, T La Rock & Run, but in battling it's more. Like when I hit him with the Ls (lower level, lackluster etc) it wasn't just insulting, but it had poetic value to it".

I had forgotten about "In the House." LL had been in a few movies, but that was his first full-time acting gig. It went on for five seasons. It was kind of neat that he played against type. His character was an ex-jock but he was written as kind of spacey and spiritual, and for the first couple seasons he played against Debbie Allen who was a more hard-nosed divorcee.

True story: I was the high school mascot, which was a knight motif with papier mache head for 4 years. During my senior year, the costume was stolen out of the coach's car. So I missed the 1st half of football season, until one of the male teachers offered to let me borrow an old Mummers costume (look that up) from a Camelot theme his Mummer group had done. The principal wanted a big surprise appearance for the Crusader, with a dance number. I performed a dance routine in the homecoming pep rally to "Mama Said Knock You Out" in a 60lb Mummers costume, on roller skates, while twirling a baton. I am not a dancer or a skater, but I performed a miracle that day, even though I wound up bruised from my neck to my ankles from a 60lb suit.

I was on a date with my GF and I'm driving going through the songs on side one. We get to the restaurant and right as I pulled up. "Mama said knock you out" came on and I was messed up. i played it 3 more times int he parking lot and my girl is getting mad because shes hungry and ready to go in. Later that night I kept rewinding that song over and over again. It wasn't until the next day that I heard the rest of side two. Loved the Funky Drummer loop in it. My favorite beat.

Fresh Prince mentions the line "mama said knock you out". I think it's the episode where the girl at the gym kicks the crap out of him and he beats her at the end. At some point, I think she mentions a powerful quote to him and the name of the person who said it, and he responds "mama said knock you out - LL Cool J...". Funny scene. Possibly what you talking about. In the end though, it would appear Will's own mother told him to only slap him.

It's nice to see the new school picking up on the old school flavor, but to really experience it the way it was you had to be there. Back when your ride was Rock Box One, the killer sound system window and top of the ride down and your cut was blasting out of them state of that speakers and car stereo system. Junior year in college and LL dropped this cut as I was heading back to school. I had this jamming as I rode on to campus and everyone was partying! Raw edge sound and LL was not playing around, slaying everyone who thought he was soft and done because he dropped a top 40 hit with I need Love. Mr. Smith was his return to the old LL cool j sound.

TAKIN OUT THE TRASH! THE best part: “Don’t call it a comeback! I’ve been here for years!” And HI. There are no conversations that even need to be had..-> If your mother tells you to do something, you not only have her blessing, it is necessary! It is funny too though at the end he was just a young man sitting in his mom’s basement with his imagination. Everything has to start from somewhere. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. If you KNOW you have “IT”, you probably are right. If you have good taste and know what’s good and think you’re good, then you SHOULD. Trust yourself and don’t listen to the word NO. LL didn’t.

LL is in his own lane! Brought 🔥 from the jump: “I Can’t Live Without My Radio”, Dear Yvette”, “I Need Love”, “I’m Bad”, “Big Ole Butt”, “I’m The Type of Guy”, “Around the Way Girl”, “Pink Cookies…”, “Back Seat of my Jeep”, “Doin It”, “Hey Lover”. Pause. Hold up, I could keep going, but here’s the straight truth: if you play any of his compilation albums or greatest hits, all bangers, you didn’t hear me ALL BANGERS! LL got bars for decades! “Between the Sheetz” w/Mickey Shiloh from 2013 might be the most underrated banger in his entire catalog.

So glad you picked us for LL! You just got to see one of the original Hardcore rappers of the 90s who paved the way for all the rappers that we here today and many others. Again I was in high school. He was a man you could feel good about liking and listening to. With talent just oozing out of his pores. He is a great man and has mentored many more artists. He coined the phrase “Mama said knock you out”. I still find it coming out of my mouth today. I highly recommend you watching more of him and “going back to Cali“ is a sweet and fun one always! Your reaction was great I love how you were so surprised and loved his flow. His purity of rap is nothing like there is today. peace

In the chorus, it sounds like a sample of a a cat meow or a baby crying on the 1 and rhe the 3. At “Im “ and “momma”. One of the greatest gentleman rappers for sure.

LL Cool J aka James Todd Smith told his grandmother that he had a hard time competing with all the young and upcoming gangster rappers that were dissing him. She said: Oh baby, just knock them out. The number had samples from Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, Chicago Gangsters and ŁL's own Rock the Bells. He was hitting at Kool Moe Dee. He later had a "beef" with Canibus. They took turns at each other. But LL later thanked him for inspiration

LL’s DJ is Cut Creator!! This is back when DJs were really cutting on the records...not mixing on scratch machines! All the MCs would shout their DJs out in some way back in the day...either throw them a line, a verse or even an entire song! DJs were just as big as the MCs! “Gooo! Go Cut Creator! Gooo!” 🎶🎶 You should check that song out too! LL gives his DJ props and Cut Creator kills that track!👍🏾✌🏾

Ladies Love Cool James. Back in the day he did an episode of MTV Unplugged. Rapping over a full band. He was skeptical when they called him (according to an interview) but after hearing the band play he was totally into it. An original game changer that only got bigger with time.

The reason he started the song by saying “c’mon man” is because he was frustrated with the engineer and on the take that ended up being the session that made the album you can almost hear that this session had better hit the mark or else someone was getting fired or knocked TF out lol.
