The Governor at the time was George Wallace the segregationist, they say boo boo boo after saying in Birmingham they love the Governor. The song was a response to Neil Young's Southern Man saying don't lump in all southern men as being racist. After the this song came out it was thought they hated each other but couldn't be further from the truth, they liked and respected each other and if you look at the final album cover of Skynyrd Van Zant is wearing a Neil Young shirt

Absolutely correct. I first saw them when they still had not released albums in 1972 at a free concert at San Diego State. Great show even then. My friend and I sat behind some Hell's Angels and my friend spilled his beer on one of them. We bought them a round and everything was cool, but at 17 we were scared. The music took attention away from us.

Democrats invented and enforced segregation and forced sterilization laws until Buc vs Bell forced sterilization laws were overturned. Many of these eugenecists still promote the same policies as part of their "great white burden" to manage us, they only switched from overt to subversive from coercive to marketed. I have no love for the government neolib nannymarxists or the warmarxist neocons both want rights and monet for war & "the greater good".

They put the Governor's name at the bottom of the welcome sign at that time, Georgia too. "Signed, Gov Lester Maddox". After that they'd give you a warning about littering.

Alabama girl here!I know you reacted to Freebird already but you should watch "Freebird" live at the Oakland Colliseum 7/2/77. It starts out slow but by the end of the song its legendary. Since you like guitars I think youll really enjoy this! Also it wasent long after (3 months) that their plane crashed killing three of them.

Neil Young wrote a couple of songs about racism in the south, “Southern Man” & “Alabama”, that seemed to paint all southerners as racists. “Sweet Home Alabama” was basically their response that not all southerners agreed with Governor Wallace the same way not all Northerners agreed with watergate. They did later say that they are big fans of Neil Young and they respect him as an artist and Neil Young said the same of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

If you guys have watched Forest Gump, the movie references Governor George Wallace who tried to keep schools segregated. Forest accidentally stumbles into this historical event (one of many). Later he says they shot that Governor when he was running for President (he was paralyzed).

The Neil Young reference is about his song 'Southern Man', the song seems to paint a wider picture that all Southerners are racist, but the members of Skynyrd said there are no hard feelings between Neil Young and Skynyrd.

Yep - Neil used to get death threats when he played in Alabama after this song came out, but he and the boys from Skynyrd were actually good friends. In fact, Neil offered his song 'Powderfinger' to Lynyrd Skynyrd but they passed, saying they felt he would do it better. Hell, Neil was an honourary pallbearer at Ronnie Van Zandt's funeral.

The portion of the song referring to Governor George Wallace in particular made some believe that Lynyrd Skynyrd disagreed with desegregation, seeing as how the governor stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever". But others interpreted the lyrics as a reminder to Young that not all Southerners are the same. "We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two," Van Zant later said. "We're Southern rebels but, more than that, we know the difference between right and wrong." In fact, those "boos" are thought to imply that the band disagreed with Wallace's politics-and that bit about Watergate seems to be a pointed remark about the hypocrisy of the North, which had its own problems, too.

He’s say in Birmingham “they” love the governor.. he’s booing governor George Wallace which wanted segregation now and forever. The “they” in the lyrics are talking about the people that supported Wallace. Songs like this helped stop racism and more than people know. People see the rebel flag Skynyrd used and go straight to racism, and in fact it’s the opposite. It was heritage that’s it

My brother. Alabama's govenor was George Wallace. The song came out in 1974. Wallace in the 1960s was a presidential candidate as well. His stance was Segregation today. Segregation tomorrow. Segregation forever. In 1970 he was elected Governor of Alabama. In 1972 a guy, last name started with a B, tried to assassinate him. He shot 4 people Wallace being the target. It severed his spine and paralyzed him from the waist down. Wallace was beloved by Alabama. His acceptance speech for Governor in 1970 was written by a leader of the Ku Klux Klan. I remember him standing in front of a school with a baseball bat saying no Black person is going to white schools in his run. After his assassination attempt he mellowed and got nicer. But it was a little too little, a little too late.
