In the more recent years of performing this, James will often use this song to call out to anyone who is struggling with the message, "You are not alone." Thousands and thousands of people across the world will often cite that this song saved their lives, and prevented them from committing the act. Powerful stuff.

IMHO… this song has helped more people cope with suicidal ideation than most therapists. You don’t have to condone suicide to be grateful that someone gave a voice to it so that it can be transmuted into something healing. That’s what Metallica does for us my friend, the broken people, the ones who are cheated of our youth, they bring us together so that we can rage together and then heal together…across the world, across generations…thru their music, their incredibly thoughtful and immaculately deep feeling music. Metallica give us a voice, and as you’ll see they also give a voice to death, war, religion, social injustice and so many more deep topics, pure emotion, I’m so glad you’re in for the ride even tho it’s not all sunshine and ease! 💚🤘🏼✨

If/When any friend (or acquaintance) tells you they are thinking of suicide, please listen to them, because they really are thinking of suicide, they are dangerously close to that edge, they have thought it all out, it is already planned, to come right out and say just that to a trusted confidant, is a final cry for help.

Go down the rabbit hole of Metallica! You won’t regret it. Not only is their musical ability great but James is a master at lyrics. The way he puts the words down just hits you in the feels. And he writes them in a vague way that the listener can interpret them to their own life and experiences.
@Lurch5242 жыл бұрын
A really cool thing about Metallica is they can (or at least used to) tell a story through instrumentals alone. You don't even need lyrics for their songs. If you just listen to their guitars you can understand so much of what's being said through the music. This song is an excellent example of that.
@drewcliff822 жыл бұрын
I've always felt this song was meant to give perspective from the side of the the suicidal individual to combat the narratives that "They are only seeking attention" or "Someone who kills themselves are just being selfish". It is very important for everyone to understand their perspective and sympathize with them so we can recognize the signs and get them help.
@m.ericwatson9682 жыл бұрын
Suicidal ideation is suicide in itself, it is a plan, to imagine the world as it would be without "your own self" being in it, and seeing light in your own absence, nothing else changes, is a very powerful thought and becomes a motivator.
@floreaciprian97422 жыл бұрын
One of my favourite things about metal is that it is not afraid to speak loudly about a lot of topics that you dont find in mainstream music. Depression, suicide, anger, sorrow and so on they are all human traits and experiences and this type of music speaks to a lot of people that experience these type of situations and it helps a lot. Im not saying thats all there is to metal and its fans, you simply find the whole spectrum and its wonderful

This song has been around a very long time. To put it in perspective- they wrote this while still in their teens! Incredible song. I highly recommend listening to the studio version or a more recent live performance on your own. Metallica puts out recent live performances on KZbin nearly daily for their fans but I believe if you tried that on your channel it may get blocked so try it out on your own.

This song has saved me from myself twice now. Your mind goes to that place and you're ready to paint the ceiling but a song like this can come on and entrances you. It committed suicide for me and gave a release to the pressure. Hope anyone going through such thoughts finds this song or one like it so they can die to the music but survive themselves.

This song absolutely helped me through my darkest time.... I know it's weird, I can't explain it to someone who hasn't gone through it, but when you are at a dark point, listening to music that is as dark as you feel can help you to find a way through instead of causing you to act upon your darkest impulses...

I think that it has to do with not feeling alone. When you're in a deep depression, possibly with suicidal thoughts, you feel incredibly alone - like no one can possibly understand what you're feeling. Then here comes Metallica putting what your feeling, every bit of it, in a song. More over its a song that's widely popular, and you start to feel like maybe you're not alone.

Ya know, for years I didn’t know this was about depression (even though the lyrics are so obvious). I lost my grandma back in 2014 and then my step dad (to cancer) back in 2018. This song really comforted me in my depression of losing my loved ones, especially with my step dad. It was and still is very hard on me. This song just sometimes lets me have a good cry 😭 and to me, I always felt the song was about losing a loved one. Or I guess that’s how I interpreted it and it still helps me heal with the pain of depression and death of a loved one. 💕

Back in the day, '85, of course we all loved Metallica, I had a friend who said he hated this song in particular, I asked him why, it's such a good song, he said he really didn't like the lyrics, ok, it's kinda somber and maybe even depressing...about a year later he took his own life, that was an epiphany for me as a teenager, the thought of suicide had never really crossed my mind, his suicide brought a level of depth and emotion to this song and I always think of him when I hear it now; it's a tough listen for me but still a brilliant song.

When I was in High School in 1986, I had a history teacher named Mr. Leahey. He was (still is) an Alum of Holy Cross and rather religious. He would kneel on one knee and "Cross" himself whenever he mentioned Holy Cross just to give you an idea. At the time, the Congressional PMRC hearings were going on in DC and he was rather shocked to hear of this new music, this "Death Metal" and one day stopped in the middle of class and started on this rant about it, "crossing" himself the whole time like Satan was about to abduct him and do unspeakable things to him. I was also in a graphic arts class and we were going over typesetting that particular week. So I typeset the lyrics of many songs, this one included, and made him a mix tape (I know, a mix tape, I'm dating myself😳) of the songs so he could experience it himself. I knew what this song was about, I'm not stupid, and picked it just to shock him. The next day I got called down to the Guidance Councillor's office (who happened to be my neighbor and I had known him for years) because he got a frantic Mr. Leahey in his office that morning worried that I was about to off myself. Mr. McCabe, like I said, had known me for years and he just looked at me and goes "Aaron, What the Hell!! Why are you giving death metal to Leahey? Don't you think I have enough problems with students? Now I gotta worry about Leahey too? Cut it out!" As I walked out of the office, Mr. McCabe patted me on the back and said "Nicely played" and started cracking up as I closed the door. I still see Mr. Leahey from time to time at work (I'm a meat cutter at a supermarket) and he has never forgotten me....LOL. Great song :) Edit: I should add that I think it's great that Mr. Leahey cared enough about me, one of many students he taught, to approach Mr. McCabe worried for my safety. I find it rather touching to this day, 30-odd years later😁

Almost every time you listen to a Metallica song live for the first time, just know you're not hearing the version that everyone else is familiar with. They tend to go with slightly modified arrangements for their live shows. This one's pretty close but still a lot of embellishment going on throughout. But while this version of the song I would only give a 6/10...the album version is a solid 8/10 for me.

Now since I'm new to your channel I obviously don't know if you've already covered this song, but if not how about doing the Queensryche song Take Hold of the Flame (the Live in Tokyo 1984 version). Now since you mentioned an uplifting song, here's a good suggestion: the Queensryche song Take Hold of the Flame (the Live in Tokyo 1984 version). This song is at the other emotional extreme, it's about hope. Essentially about how one should 'seize the day' (Carpe Diem). Basically don't let opportunities pass you by, instead seize the moment and just go for it. You know, live life to the fullest.
