The genius of this song is that the music mimics the addicts roller coaster ride of feelings. The transition into the slow melody mimics the addict getting his fix. The music then goes up tempo as the need for another fix intensifies.

"How I'm killing you" He's singing from the drugs perspective. The drug is the master, pulling the strings of puppet addict. The puppet needs his fix, so he come crawling and screaming to the master, who hears his cries, despite the puppet knowing that the drug is controlling him, smashing his dreams, and killing him. "Chop your breakfast on a mirror" is synonymous with chopping up cocaine for breakfast, instead of eating, which obviously unhealthy. The master(drugs) tells the puppet(addict) lies saying that the puppet can't live without him; in other words, you can't function due to the withdrawals, and need the master for your fix. I was an opiate addict for 10 years, been clean for 4 years now, and that shit was the master of my life at the time. Every day was me trying to grab so I wouldn't hit withdrawal, get high, then do it all over again. I didn't care about anything else. I overdosed one night, and the next I went on methadone and never looked back. Took my last drink of methadone 4 years ago, and can say it was the best decision I ever made in my life. So glad I'm out of that life now.

Rock and Metal are telling 2 stories at the same time. The story is in instruments as well as the lyrics. The instruments have their own side of the story to tell. This song is the perfect example of that. The first part of the song is the Addict craving and seeking their drug of choice. The music is hard and slightly frenetic to express the emotions and feeling of the addict who needs a fix. It gets slightly faster and more frantic the closer to the musical interlude of the middle of the song. The melodic interlude is the calmness and the high because the addict has found what they crave. The instruments start to pick up the pace and the energy as the story gets to the end because the addict is coming down from their high and starting the cycle of their ritual all over again. To listen to rock or metal, you have to listen with a different ear than what you listen to hip hop with. The beat of a hip hop song is not the story. Its simply there to give the artist something to tell their story over. Its almost like a metronome. Its only purpose is to keep time and keep the flow on point. Rock is different. The instruments not only drive the story but tell their own story.

The music and lyrics are supposed to be telling the SAME story. They just elaborate in different ways in fill in certain holes. It's not like it's a different story. It's the same story otherwise they wouldn't fit together. Hence why the music chosen for MoP's lyrics sounds like this. And that's why One sounds the way it does. In this song, they are telling a similar story, true, but it's from different perspectives, one is from the viewpoint of the user, the other is the viewpoint of the drug itself. Also, the music can have different interpretations as well. For example the way it comes across to me is that the first section is about the downfall of someone subcoming to the drugs... the second part is a new person enjoying the high and then slowly getting pulled into a personal hell, repeating the tragedy over and over again. To me this is validated by the line "..and now I rule you too!" suggesting it's a different person. **shrug** but everyone has their own interpretation of a song and its lyrics.

in this songs case, it's one story. fast paced and hard at start because they are hyped up on the drugs. it goes slow in the middle because they are coming down, then at the end it get's even harder because they are back on the drugs and over dosing.

People suggest their favorite song without taking into consideration the perspective of the person who will be listening to it for the first time. Metallica is by far the best heavy metal band due to their first four albums, but they’re also extremely diverse too (especially after their 5th album). Master of Puppets is a lot to take in for someone new to this genre. (Excellent song though!) There are 3 Metallica songs (that are also fan favorites) that have a slower beginning (with beautiful instrumentation) that will slowly ease you into the harder/faster aspects that occur later in the songs. All 3 are truly excellent. 1. Sanitarium (another term for a mental institution) This one seems to really resonate with people new to this type of music. 2. Fade to Black (The lyrics express the thoughts of a guy who ultimately commits suicide while the instruments do a fantastic job of expressing his emotions. Despite the dark content, the music is somehow not depressing, and for those who are currently in a dark place, the song tends to help them feel better, not more depressed.) 3. One (DEEP song based on a book (and later movie) about a soldier who’s physically and emotionally devastated by WWI. Starts off slow and beautiful and slowly builds up to a heavy metal ending.) They also have one country-ish song called Mama Said that’s really good!

This song IMO is about the stages of addiction from drug use. Starts off with the casual user wanting to find a fix. Then @ 7:10, the user scores some and uses. Then you hear the mellow euphoric music. @ 9:40, the amped up rage of the crash and searching for the next fix. @12:20, you’re hooked. You’ll do anything for your next fix. You have to obey your master when he urges you and you have to do what the drugs tell you. It ends with the “master” laughing at you because he knows he has you in his clutches.

Metallica writes absolutely brilliant lyrics, especially on their 1st 4 albums (kill 'em all, lightning, puppets, and justice)... You don't have to "get through" the music to get to the lyrics, either, because the music would hold up the song if there were no lyrics. I very much enjoy that much extra music because it's a joy to hear, and it showcases their talent. This is a different genre than what you're used to. They actually have oodles of talent, musically AND lyrically. You picked out that this was about drugs early enough... check out creeping death and absorb those lyrics. You have no idea what you're talking about. Producers don't just "pick a beat". The meticulous level of attention to detail to find the perfect samples requires hours of sifting through crates. Some actually play multiple musical instruments to create their own samples. And then they have to craft and combine each sound to tell a story. I'm not arguing which is more difficult or requires more skill, but to say hip hop doesn't develop appreciation for pure musical talent is insane. I feel ya on all your comments. I've grown up a rock fan as well as a hip hop fan. The qualities I appreciate and enjoy from both genres are different from each other. I love the lyricism and production of rap. I love the masterful talents of musicians and the instruments they play when compiling a rock song...and the ability to compose a song that includes multiple musicians and instruments. For the most part, a rap song's main components are the producer of the beats and the writer/orator of the lyrics (certainly, exceptions apply). Whereas a typical rock song consists of 3+ musicians playing multiple different instruments (I think back to a live performance by the band Chicago where I swear they had over 10 instruments being played at a live performance). So to think about the work and coordination that goes into everything being in sync to the point of an audibly pleasing tune, I think is definitely admirable (in the least).

As I previously stated, I've always loved rock music (not so much hard rock...more classic rock...Metallica is about as hard as I've ever preferred). Watching rock music live is next-level enjoyment for me; whereas, rap music live can sometimes be hit or miss with me. And, after 40 years of enjoying rock music, I finally decided to try to teach myself how to play the guitar. That gave me a whole new appreciation for the talent that goes into the mastery of that instrument. Having said all that, I would HIGHLY recommend reacting to a live performance by Stevie Ray Vaughan. In fact, I'll donate to the Recklezz Fam just to be able to gain both of y'alls feedback and insight into that type of performance.

Master of Puppets was my introduction to Metallica all the way back in 1989. They were a bucket list group. I actually had tickets to see Metallica in 1993 when they toured with Guns N Roses. I worked at the fairgrounds the concert was happening at. I’m a preachers kid so he limited what I listened to. I told my parents I was working that night. I was so psyched. Then Axl Rose’s punk ass decided he didn’t wanna play that night and the concert was cancelled. Metallica became this world wide amazing legendary band and didn’t come back to Tulsa Oklahoma until 2017 when I finally got to mark them off the bucket list. These guys have been killing it for almost 40 years and they’re one of a handful of bands that to me are better live than in studio. Nothing beats Metallica live!

The music paces with the ups and downs of drug taking beginning with taking the drug, getting high, coming down, getting angry at the drug (this is where the lyrics switch to the puppet), then getting the next fix.

When it comes to metal first you respect the music, the arrangement , the complexities , and the time signature changes. All of these thinks keep it interesting. You then gain respect for the musicians who dedicate their lives to their craft. No auto tune , no drum machines, just humans who have mastered their instrument. Then you begin to disect the lyrics. Metal features much symbolism Like the line "Chop your breakfast on a mirror" symbilizes the addict who rather than eating a nutritious breakfast they opt for cocaine. I respect that you have chosen to take on this dive into metal. Stick with it. Next try Iron Maiden's Hallowed be thy name. The long intros in metal songs are doing two things. Setting the vibe and surrounding the listener in the world the band is setting up before whatever message is coming, like any good horror movie that takes its time building up and setting the scene before showing you something horrific. You get 2 minutes into a song with a really powerful intro where the drums are going apeshit and the guitars have you given you some massive riff thats going to be stuck in your head forever...... and then the vocal hits and you're like "yeah I know exactly what you're saying!" It's also a showcase for the instruments where they establish the sounds and themes and sometimes the hook youre going to hear later. Metallica were masters of creating really powerful, memorable intros in their prime.

You’re right. It’s not for everyone. I grew up listening to my dad’s 80’s hair metal music. But I came to loving all types of music. Because I appreciate what goes into it. The passion, the work. So I can listen to pretty much anything. I played the guitar and learned music composition so that’s where my open mindedness comes from. Music is a composition that you can listen to and enjoy even with out lyrics. A lot of metal is more about the music than it is about being a song, and that's what I love about it. The instruments are saying something. The structure is saying something. Even if you stripped out the vocals from this song, the music would still be saying something and if you're paying attention, you'll even feel something.

This is how genius this song is. Yes guessed right, it's about drugs. But, pay attention to all 3 major sections of the song. The beginning = in your face, but straight forward = wanting and looking for the drugs. The middle = calm and peaceful = you found the drugs, you got your fix and are feeling great. The rest of the song = chaotic sounding, out of contol = the crash of coming off the drugs....and the cycle continues. As a former addict, this song hits hard.

Dude you've come a long way from your first Tom MacDonald reaction. This is "metal" music aka heavy metal. It's a progression from "rock & roll" that became a think in the late 60s. It's the "gansta rap" of rock music. The primary difference other than sound between 'rock and roll' vs 'metal', is that rock & roll usually makes songs for having fun and partying. While there are outliers that are exceptions, for the most part, rock music has always been about rebelling and partying hard. Metal is actually more similar to hip-hop in that the lyrics of metal music are quite often or usually very deep and profound. It's usually anti-establishment or anti-elite music for the masses. the music composition is center stage however - you commented on how long they played their instruments before anyone said anything - like the musical score in a great movie scene, the music helps the audience connect with the dialogue and the scene to make you feel a sort of way. Metal does this. The lyrics are deep, and are meant to smack you in the head, often times takes you with them to let you feel what they are feeling in their lyrics - the instrumentation and music heightens that connection - that's the "soulful" comment/connection you were making. I believe the more you listen, the more you will see that metal and hip-hop have so much in common. (true good rap hip-hop - not the gucci gang drink-lean mainstream shit - i mean deep meaningful got it out he mud life struggle and philosophical shit that makes you think) in fact a lot of rap uses rock and metal bass beats to sample for their songs, cuz as you could hear, the instruments in metal are so fkn raw!

I think a better introduction to metal is starting with groups more akin to rap to get a better feel of the instruments incorporated with the lyrics. I’d really recommend Rage Against The Machine which has incredible rapping over the top of the instruments. The singer spits on Bulls on Parade and Killing in the Name of for two recommendations

Also, you should check out the legend Freddy Mercury and his band Queen. “Somebody to love” live in Montreal 1981 was one of the most epic performances I have ever seen

The talent level is different with instrumental based music, especially as a singer, songwriter and playing an instrument. Years into improving your writing skills, years of vocal training and even more years in mastering your instrument then put it all together without missing a beat while moving around on stage for 1-2 hours. I always admire people who can sing and play at the same time. And I'm not talking some slow tune while playing a few simple repeated basic chord pattern at a steady pace around the campfire you feel me. Metal is my shit man 🤘Legendary band, ground breaking album and a masterful song.

This is one of the best heavy metal songs in history.. I'm not even a huge Metallica fan but thems the facts. If you dont 'get' this one, or appreciate why it's great.. this genre may not be for you. All these bands have a lot of hits but I tried to pick the better known ones cuz I figured they'd be more accessible for someone not used to rock music.

honestly as a metallica fan, i would never recommend master of puppets as a first listen. it's VERY heavy. i sould suggest one, the unforgiven, or no leaf clover. they are a lot more melodic. they are heavy, but in a different way. there is more build up and break down. you have to get a feel for them before you can truly appreciate the really heavy stuff from them. listen to those 3 songs, then get back to me. trust me, you will fall in love with them. by that time, you will have a feeling for their "flow", and feeling to their music, and will be able to appreciate the heavier stuff.

You guys need your own separate headphones. Some music, especially from 70's and 80's, is designed to be listened to with stereo headphones. Also, my uncle told me that in ANY genre of music, you will find someone you like. Because there is such a wide variety in almost any genre. I've always found that to be true. Listen to some classical music, specifically bach, and you will find some similarities with metallica. An appreciation of musical scales and general music theory can give you a wide appreciation for really almost any genre. Can recognize beats, rythyms, etc.
