My father and I had many issues over the years, culminating in 10 years of zero communication. A nephew of mine persuaded us both to make video contact on Christmas day... 6 months later my father passed away, and I wasn't able to attend his funeral due to covid. We resolved nothing on our chat, and it was awkward as hell, but I'm glad we started a little healing in the living years. If you're in a similar situation... compromise... make the 1st move... find a way.

I'm so sorry for your loss but I'm glad you had a good relationship with him. I lost my Dad sux months ago to dementia and was at his bedside when he died. We had a good relationship with just minor issues. One thing that really helped me was writing a letter to him after he passed; I put all my emotions, good and bad, into it and thanked him for all he had done. I sealed it in an envelope and had the funeral home put it in his casket. I did the same thing when my Mom passed away. I sobbed while writing each letter but felt such relief after. You might want to put all your thoughts about your Dad on paper. It might help. Best wishes.

Truly a beautiful song. I only had my father in my life for 20 years, and since he had alzheimers when he passed, I really only had him mentally in my life for 18 years. I was able to tell him all the things I had to say before the end, I'm just not sure how much he was able to comprehend. So, don't wait. By the way, that wasn't "Mike" singing. Mike Rutherford is the guitarist. He is also the guitarist for Genesis. The lead singer on this song is the incredible Paul Carrack.

Asia and BJ thanks for bringing me today to your channel. I have lived one life and I am close to reaching my end, yet I sit here and listen to the words and your expressions about the meaning of life. I never knew my father. Late in life I looked to put together my 'old' family. When it was presented to me, it was to late. My father passed five years before I found him and his family. Now, I am the father and although I have three sons, they are estranged to me. The generation gap caused us to thrift apart. I am from the Vietnam era and my sons wanted nothing to do with anything that I ever did. I have laid out my final resting place and no one, other than my wife, knows my wishes. I will leave this Earth just like my entrance, alone and smiling. I wish to be cremated; my ashes are to be strewn over the ocean. No headstone, no traces left behind, just like I lived for 19 years working for Uncle Sam. Thanks for reading this old man's trial and tribulations. Keep up the excellent work. I will be back to listen to more of your music.

The wonderful Paul Carrack is doing the vocals on this. You’ve probably heard him on other songs like Silent Running, Tempted (Sqeeze), and How Long Has This Been Going On (Ace). He is one of my favorite, favorite vocalists and it’s like no one else has heard of him. He’s from the UK, has been around since the ‘70s and has a great solo career, too. He’s mostly R&B, Soul, Funk, Blues, and Pop, but the man can sing the phone book if he wants to and I’ll listen to him. But my dad was very closed off, and I could never get him to to have a heart to heart talk about anything. So when he passed away, we had so many unresolved issues that will now never be cleared up because of both of our stubbornness. Tell them what you need to say, because you might miss your chance, like my dad and I did.

I am almost 70 years old. I learned this lesson many years ago, I tell the people I love, that I love them…..almost every day. I strive to never let a disagreement last very long, and I “allow” people to have a different opinion than mine on anything. We may walk away on opposite sides of an issue, but I always make sure that they know I love them, regardless. This makes for a peaceful, joyful, contented life. I wouldn’t want it any other way. Great reaction. Very real.😍

The reason great music is universal and brings people together is that great songs reflect the human condition. Doesn't matter where you come from. I'm a 55 year old husband, father, small business owner. And I very much enjoy watching you two young people from Texas (I think). Music did that, or was at least the genesis of it. There are things we all experience that help us relate to one another. Writing great lyrics is not easy to do. Some great songs are stories about experiences. Some, a great many, are about love and relationships. Very few are about mortality. This song is so powerful. It makes you want to pick up the phone and call your parents, siblings, friends you haven't spoken with in a while. It encourages you to set aside the petty disagreements, to engage, to share......cause you never know what tomorrow brings.

This song makes me think of my grandfather. I was 19 when I lost him. When he became terminal, I lost all nerve to see him. I had no quarrel with him but I didn't feel emotionally strong enough to be around him. I didn't want to feel the pain of loosing him. I was naive enough to think I could avoid it and just not deal with it. It saddens me to think that I let him go through that without my support. He was my father because mine died when I was only 2. I had a lot to learn about grief and the stubbornness to not allow anyone to advise me on it. I remember telling other relatives that I just couldn't bring myself to see him. That I was choosing to remember him the way he was. I could lie to them but I couldn't lie to myself. I tried. I had lost others but no one that I loved so deeply. The pain and regret still linger. I guess it will always be there in the back of my mind until I think about it. Because I handled it so poorly it's never fresh. It's not like the pain you feel remembering the day someone died. He lived for months. So there's no day, it's like that day happened a thousand times. It's much different than other losses I've suffered. I handled those differently and I'm thankful I did. Acknowledging my mistake is cathartic in many ways but I will never have peace. My hope is someone will read this and not make the same mistake.

Thanks for this one. This song has a special meaning to me. I lost my Dad when he was just 51. I didn't want to admit the reality of his situation. I called him at the hospital the night before he died and I told him I would see him in the morning. He passed away before I arrived. He never saw the birth of my sons and when my second son was born, I felt a strong presence of my father. So the line that says "I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away....... I've always loved this song. It always brings tears to my eyes because I remember the relationship with my natural father (or lack thereof). When he was in the hospital he was showing everyone pictures of my daughter saying, "This is my granddaughter," when he could have met her and talked to her. She never got to meet him.

My father passed away in 2010, and one thing I made sure before his death was that he knew just how much I loved him and thanked him for the lessons, the wisdom and the joy he spread around him. This song so reminds me of him... Great great choice guys. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Today is my step-father's birthday, and he passed away a little more than two years ago. He was my dad from day one, and never treated as anything other than his son, even after he and my mom divorced. We had a good relationship, although we disagreed about some things and we had our moments when we didn't speak, but they were brief. Thankfully, I got to say everything I wanted to say before he passed, and I think he did too. I thought about this song when he was sick, and I made sure he knew how I felt about him and what he meant to me before he passed, and that made it easier to deal with when he died. Happy heavenly birthday, dad!

My biological father ran off while my mom was pregnant with me. I never met him nor even saw a photo of him. However, when I was 13 my mom met and married a wonderful man who treated her like a queen and became the best father ever to me. Sadly, he died just 11 years later from a massive heart attack. I totally understand how a stepdad can be a REAL father like yours and mine were. He's been gone 35 years and I still tear up when I hear this song.

I wasn't there that afternoon when my daddy died, it's what the song says...(08-05-2014) this song could never not leave me crying...daddy was a motown/Bob Marey type of guy but what make this song even more painful was that he liked THIS SONG....It took me 6yrs to truly listen to this song once more (with tears).

Song hits home for me. My dad died in 2001. I left home at 18, never told him bye or anything. He battled bi polar for many, many years. He became a wanderer, and was hit by a pick up truck in Texas. He lived in Illinois. So many things I left unsaid.

You guys are great, and I envy you hearing this for the first time. When I was a kid, this song had such feeling and his voice was so melodic and musical I thought Mike was black. Truth is, music has no color attached. Thanks for playing it; brings back lots of good (and sad) memories. My dad passed many years ago, before I could say lots of things I needed to say. We live, and if we're lucky, we learn and grow. Bless you two.

Never, ever, for any possible reason, should we leave important things unsaid.. The last words I said to and heard from both my parents was "I love you." I treasure that fact. We had our bad times, my stupid teenage anger, their marriage issues, and yet, we were blessed to be unified for many years before they died. Talking is hard, and the truth sometimes hurts, but leave no regrets. Powerful song.

"The grown up son" in this video, and the guitarist in Mike & The Mechanics is Mike Rutherford, that plays in Genesis with Phil Collins. Mike & The Mechanics had 2 vocalists,Paul Carrack (in this video) and Paul Young. It became Mikes side project especially after Genesis decided to take a break the first time around. Such a sad end to this band, with them losing theyr keyboardist and drummer (Adrian Lee & Peter Van Hooke wich never got replaced) ,then out of the blue Paul Young died of heart attack,so being only a duo left Mike and Paul Carrack decided that "this band has ran its course", But yeah,Mike Rutherford is the brains behind this band. Just pure talent that comes from Genesis, every member is insanely talented! This song both moves me deeply, educates me,makes me reflect over my own life and decisions, and admire the pure beauty and message of this song. When 1 song gives you that much, you know its a masterpiece! PS: If you havent heard theyr "Over My Shoulder",i highly suggest it. It is a much for happier vibed song, but also with great points and a good message.

Six months ago I re-established contact with a brother I had not seen or spoken to in over 25 years. I am now 67 and he was 75; so neither of us is getting any younger and I felt it was important to reconcile out differences and realize that in the end we are different people. I am so glad we patched things up because three weeks later he died suddenly. The point is that we never know when we are going to die; it may be decades away, or we may get hit by a car when we next walk out the door. You never know. There is an old saying; "Never let the sun set on anger". You do not want to spend the rest of your days with regrets. Life is to beautiful to be filled with resentment, jealousy, anger and the rest. peace from Australia.

Being in early recovery when my pop was sick I was going away on a retreat and before I went I sat with my father and made my amends for all my wrongs growing up and what I put him through. And he looked at me half way thru and said you don’t have to do this. It’s ok. But I told him I had to do it and he said go ahead I understand. I’m so glad I got to say the things I was sorry for. It was important. And I understood how he felt because I have a son of my own that has hurt me but I love him unconditionally! Great video thanks 🌻👍👌❤️

Those brilliant vocals were supplied by Paul Carrack who has a terrific career. The hit he first had was "How Long" by Ace back in 1975. He had another big hit with the band Squeeze with "Tempted". He had "Living Years" and "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" with Mike + The Mechanics. Also had a solo hit with "Don't Shed a Tear" back in 1987. Phil Collins once described Carrack as an "incredible voice" who "could sing the telephone directory". In fact, the BBC declared him "The Man with the Golden Voice". His collaborations are a who's who in Rock.

Being a very open, verbose, and expressive person,I don't have a great deal of time for those who are so engrossed in their own lives that they do not find the time or inclination to try to patch up family differences or issues with friends because at nearly 68 in London,I know that things can suddenly change. My wonderful Dad died on the 11th April 1971 and 51 years later I still miss him and my Darling Mum passed while I was on the last day, totally unexpectedly, while I was on holiday in Portugal in 1996 so 26 years later I am comforted in knowing I told her almost every day how much I loved her...

" Silent Running" by Mike + the Mechanics is another great song! The lyrics are so intriguing, especially when you hear them in the context of today's world when you contemplate where we could be heading as a society if we're not careful. Even as a young kid hearing this song, I got an almost erie feeling like I understood it. It made so much sense that I always remembered it as a warning of a world we never want to allow. Great song, borderline prophetic...
