As a 30 year old man, that song inspired me to tell my father what he meant to me. Couldn't find the words face to face, so I wrote him a letter telling him what he meant to me. 20 years later as he lay dying, I did tell him these things and after he passed when going through his things, I found the letter I had sent him. He had kept it all those years.

I wish you could share your pain with us. It’s obvious that this song hits close to home for you. Sometimes it helps to open up and embrace the grief and work through it and share it , because it helps to get it out. It dulls the sharp edge a little. But I certainly respect you for not wanting to and I understand. I also give you a lot of credit for finishing the song while having so much pain. Thank you for doing this reaction, as tough as it was. Thank you.

In 1974 my father collapsed on the floor to a heart attack, I was only 7 years old. He was my hero and we did everything together and now he was gone. When this song came out in 1989 I was driving the 10 fwy through downtown Los Angeles and found myself weeping so badly I had to pull off the freeway because I could barely see. This song even all of these years later still gets me. And I was again weeping right along with you.

As a 52 year old who buried his father at 19, his mother at 26, and his stepfather at 31, don't be ashamed of tour tears. I've known this song since it came out in 1988, and I still cry with it. None of my parents ever met my kids. They would be so proud of them. Especially my mother. As a single mom with only a son, she looked forward to one day having a granddaughter, and sure enough, my first born is a girl who is studyfor her PhD in a chemistry field. Grandma would so love you girl!

She does I'm sure. I've never had my own children but I'm lucky enough to be a not-step-mum and n-s-gran thanks to my late partner whose wife died around 7-8yrs before I met him. I am genuinely proud of his two daughters and their 3, now adult, kids - none of whom ever met their biological gran. Over the 21yrs we were together I came to love his daughters and I adore his 3 grandchildren. Through all of the time I've had with them I've been certain of one thing - that their mum and gran would have been lovingly proud of their achievements; I know this because I was lucky enough to have both my parents well into my middle years and I saw how they were with their grand and great-grandchildren. Amuse your girl with all the fun stories of your time with your mum that way she'll know her gran. Best thoughts.

My father died on March 14, 2012, three days after my birthday. They let me know he was gone by awaking me with a call at about 6:30 in the morning. He was 90 years old. He had passed away in the night at the nursing facility where he was living after having had a stroke. Except for my wife, he was my best friend. I still miss him every day and I often feel guilty because I hadn't been to see him in the two days before he passed. Oh, how I wish I could have those days back! If those who have gone on ahead of us can see our tears, the tears we cry are not wasted for they know we cry for them and the time we wish we could redeem. God bless you Andrei! except my wife

This song was released the same year my wife and I married. For various reasons, things were difficult for her at home, but soon she was leave and start her own life with me. Her father was a lovely, decent, hard-working man, for whom I had the most respect. Unfortunately he passed weeks before our wedding. On the day he died, my wife was at home, waiting for her turn to visit her father in hospital. In the weeks that followed, she confided to me that she realised at the time her father died, she was convinced she saw him pass the living room window and smile at her. She always felt that she never got the opportunity to tell him how much she loved him. This song was a huge hit with constant airplay, we would often hear it on the radio while driving. We would be reduced to tears.

This great song came out in 1988. It means the same to me now, as it did back then. The message of this song is obvious to anyone who has lost someone in their life. Especially a parent. And hope you don't keep that promise. Because I cry then as i do now, every time I hear this. To me, that is what music is for. There is no shame in crying. It's you feel.
@elysiumfire423025 күн бұрын
With its poignant sadness this can be a devastating song to listen to. If you've never heard it before it can catch you quite unaware. I'm 65 years old and still cry to it's good counsel. Whatever memories it stirred for you, Andre, to have such a visceral reaction, know that it is okay. We can't change the past, but we can try to understand it better in the present to help us all live a better and more informed and peaceable (in mind and soul) future.
@maverick6606 Жыл бұрын
I knew, that Andrei will be overwhelmed by these lyrics, when I saw, that you are going to react to this song. It has a very deep meaning, and I can feel the meanings of this song very closely, because this song describes the situation between me and my father sooooo well (up to the moment, that as well I wasn't present, when my father passed away), and I never ever could move this things out of our ways to make full peace between us. This was especially not possible anymore because my father got mentally ill his last years and he saw and heard and felt things, which weren't really there and his reality shifted away from our reality and every try to find a common view of the simple things of life failed, let alone any attempt to remove all those old and unspoken things and getting peace over it. So in a way this is quite my song and I'm now in the same position Mike Rutherford describes in his song to call out to the people, to make it better than I did and say it out and say it clear (and make peace) before we die. Oh, and to Andre I want to say (as a man) : don't ever promise to never cry again! This is nothing you should be ashamed off! If this song reaches the peoples heart and possibly can make them to draw conclusions for their own life, then the song has full filled its purpose. Nobody should be ashamed about tears ever! Don't try to be the "hard" or "tough" guy, if nobody asks for it. You don't have to prove anything at all! Really - listen to your wise wife ;-)

I'm not surprised by your reactions. I've heard this song many times since it came out and it still brings tears to my eyes. A friend can't listen to it as much as he loved the song after losing his dad to cancer . They often didn't get on, but he died without them really ever talking about their differences. He had children born the year after his fa5her died, so the lyrics really go very deep with him. A very sad, but beautiful and meaningful song we all need to bear in mind as we age from our early years. I think someone needed a hug in the review, but he like me, would have literally fallen apart at any form of loving comfort. Sorry it was upsetting for you to listen to, but you can't deny that it is very poignant and beautiful.

My father is 84 and lives just one state away from me but I haven’t seen him in 27 years and have only spoken to him a handful of times in the past 27 yrs. The why of it doesn’t matter. I’ve let the tiny crack become a huge gap and time is closing in. Maybe I’ll be able to rent a car or something and make the 6 hr drive down to see him and talk to him before he leaves this world. He’s the reason I have blue eyes and dirty blonde hair and have a maniacal laugh, and he’s half of the reason I’m here.

There is not a man born, in history, or today, who did not have a problem with his father at one point. That same man cannot live without having a problem with his son. And that son will have a problem with that man, his father.... None of us ever get the choice to be there when our father passes... And every one of us wishes we had done more, said more, expressed more. It is life. We don't get a choice but to live it and move forward. There is no shame in crying for your dad.. There is no shame in crying for some regret. What we can do is pass along to our sons and daughters that it is okay to disagree, but never okay to stop loving. Thank you for the reaction.

I was 14 when my Father passed away. I’m now 75 and I cry every time I hear this song! I wish I could have a conversation with him to this day. Miss you Dad ❤

Do you know who Genesis is? Mike Rutherford was the bass player and guitarist of Genesis for over 50 years! The singer in this band is Paul Carrack, who also sang in Ace, Squeeze and his own solo albums. Mike wrote this song, and wrote many iconic songs for Genesis (Follow You Follow Me, Watcher of the Skies, Land of Confusion are a few). Heartfelt reaction. You could always pause a few minutes and then discuss... The song was inspired by Mike Rutherford and B.A. Robertson realizing their fathers had died around the same time, and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young, as well. Rutherford said: "Being of similar age, we both came from an era where our parents had lived through two world wars, when young men wanted to be like their fathers - wear the same clothes, do the same things. But then there was a huge change and our generation wanted to be anything but their fathers. It wasn't our parents' fault, there was just a big social change. Pop music had come along, The Beatles, denim trousers... for the first time, teens had their own culture. That's how our generation couldn't really talk to our parents in the same way. So we had the idea of writing a song about how you never really talk to your father, and you miss out on these things."
