The two choirs symbolize that it's so fast we go from children to adults in life, without even realizing it.

This song saved me and my Father. And when he passed, we were one, like never before.....all because of this song. 'Listen as well as you hear' 'A new perspective on a different day' you're god damn right! I WAS there that morning when he passed away, I did tell him all I had to say in the time we had I did listen as well as hear, to him, he passed knowing he was loved and respected and that no argument or misunderstanding is worth getting in the way of our relationship.

I know someone else said the two choirs are about going from child to adult quickly, but given the subject matter of the song, I always thought it was the two generations trying to get each other to hear each other. to communicate.

A very heartfelt reaction ❤‍🩹! Paul Carrack sings the lead vocals. The children's choir came from The King's House School in London, England. The song addresses a son's regret over a conflict left unresolved with his now deceased father. The Living Years was released as the second single from Mike + The Mechanics' 1988 album: Living Years. The song was written by BA Robertson and Mike Rutherford. It was produced by Christopher Neil and Mike Rutherford. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #5 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song also reached #1 in Australia, Canada and Ireland. The music video was directed by Tim Broad and was filmed in October 1988 in West Somerset, England, near Porlock Weir and the Hamlet of Culbone. It features Mike Rutherford with his then-eight-year-old son, Tom. It also includes an appearance by actress Maggie Jones, best known for playing Blanche Hunt in the soap opera: Coronation Street. The song won the British Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 1989, and was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1990 in the categories for: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Video. The song was written in stages. BA Robertson wrote the first verse before his father passed away in 1986, the same year Mike Rutherford lost his dad. The pair composed the music based on this verse, and then a while later BA Robertson came up with the second verse. The final verse didn't come to him until shortly before the song was recorded. BA Robertson was staying at a hotel in Los Angeles and was under pressure to finish the lyric before flying back to Europe. He recalls going outside to a garden at the hotel when the verse came to him. BA Robertson was working with Mike Rutherford when he got the call that his dad had passed away, which is reflected in the opening lines of this verse: I wasn't there that morning / When my father passed away Three months before his father passed away died, BA Robertson's son was born, which we hear in this line: I'm sure I heard his echo / In my baby's new born tears In 1996, famed composer Burt Bacharach opined that the song was one of the finest lyrics of the last ten years. In 2004, "The Living Years" was awarded a 4-Million-Air citation by BMI. Song Credits 📝: Mike Rutherford - electric rhythm guitar, bass guitar Paul Carrack - lead vocals Paul Young - backing vocals Adrian Lee - keyboards Peter Van Hooke - drums Sal Gallina - keyboards BA Robertson - keyboards Alan Murphy - guitar Martin Ditcham - percussion Luís Jardim - percussion Christopher Neil - backing vocals Alan Carvell - backing vocals Lyrics 🗒: Every generation Blames the one before And all of their frustrations Come beating on your door I know that I'm a prisoner To all my Father held so dear I know that I'm a hostage To all his hopes and fears I just wish I could have told him in the living years Oh, crumpled bits of paper Filled with imperfect thoughts Stilted conversations I'm afraid that's all we've got You say you just don't see it He says it's perfect sense You just can't get agreement In this present tense We all talk a different language Talking in defense Say it loud (say it loud), say it clear (oh, say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear, yeah It's too late (it's too late) when we die (oh, when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye So we open up a quarrel Between the present and the past We only sacrifice the future It's the bitterness that lasts So don't yield to the fortunes You sometimes see as fate It may have a new perspective On a different day And if you don't give up, and don't give in You may just be okay So say it, say it, say it loud, say it clear (oh, say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear Because it's too late, it's too late (it's too late) When we die (oh, when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye I wasn't there that morning When my Father passed away I didn't get to tell him All the things I had to say I think I caught his spirit Later that same year I'm sure I heard his echo In my baby's new born tears I just wish I could have told him in the living years So say it, say it, say it loud, say it clear (oh, say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear, yeah It's too late (it's too late) when we die (it's too late when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye Hey, so say it, say it, say it loud (say it loud, say it loud) Say it clear (come on say it clear) Say it loud (Don't give up, don't give in and don't look away 'til it's too late) Say it clear Mike + The Mechanics Info 📰: Mike + The Mechanics are a Rock Supergroup formed in Dover, England, in 1985, by Mike Rutherford, initially as a side project during a hiatus period for his other group Genesis. The band are known for the hit singles: "Silent Running", "All I Need Is A Miracle", "Taken In", "The Living Years", "Word Of Mouth", and "Over My Shoulder". They have released nine studio albums, three compilation albums, more than thirty singles, and one live in concert video. During hiatuses from Genesis, Mike Rutherford had been pursuing a solo career, releasing the albums: Smallcreep's Day in 1980, and Acting Very Strange in 1982. He found the process of recording a solo album excessively difficult, however, and the results artistically unsatisfying, particularly in regards to singing lead vocals on the latter album. He recalled: "I had a revelation, too, in this time period ... that I'm not complete on my own. ... I'm much more creative and inspired when there are other people around me and I'm bouncing ideas off". He still felt that working only with Genesis would leave him unfulfilled, however, and to satisfy both his desire to create music outside the format of Genesis and his desire to collaborate with other musicians, he set about forming his own band. Initially, the band included Mike Rutherford, vocalists Paul Carrack and Paul Young, keyboardist Adrian Lee, and drummer Peter Van Hooke. The band's debut album: Mike + The Mechanics, produced three charting singles: "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" (#6 Pop), "All I Need Is A Miracle" (#5 Pop) , which both reached the Pop Top 10 in the US and an additional US Pop hit with "Taken In" (#32 Pop). The band's song: "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" was featured in the 1986 film: On Dangerous Ground, released in North American cinemas as Choke Canyon. The band's single: "The Living Years" (US #1, UK #2), from their second album: Living Years (1988), became their biggest hit song. The song was written by BA Rutherford and Mike Robertson after both of their fathers had recently passed away, but the lyrics were written solely by BA Robertson and centered on the unresolved dissension between BA Robertson and his father. The song was sung by Paul Carrack, who also had an emotional attachment to the song, having lost his own father when he was 11 years old. The album also featured the song: "Nobody's Perfect", sung by Paul Young; it served as the background music to a television advertising campaign for the beer: Tennent's Bitter. At this point Paul Carrack began to take a much larger role in the band, joining their stable of songwriters and adding keyboards. The group's third album: Word Of Mouth, followed in 1991. It was less successful than its predecessors, particularly in the US, but scored another trio of charting singles in the UK, with the lead single: "Word Of Mouth" (#13 UK Singles), becoming one of their most popular songs yet. The album's other charting singles were: "A Time and Place"(#58 UK Singles) and "Everybody Gets a Second Chance" (#56 UK Singles). Their fourth album: Beggar On A Beach Of Gold, did not appear until 1995. It yielded both a UK Singles music chart top 40 hit in the title track: "Beggar On A Beach Of Gold" (#33) and another UK Singles music chart hit in "Over My Shoulder" (#12). The latter, which was their first hit to be co-written by Paul Carrack, became arguably their most aired song on British radio. After a decade together, Adrian Lee and Peter Van Hooke dropped out in 1995 and were not replaced. Following Paul Young's passing in 2000, Paul Carrack became the band's sole lead vocalist until 2004 when the band (essentially a duo at this point) dissolved, with Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack both agreeing the band had "run its course". Their run of successes was capped with the compilation album: 1996's Hits, which compiled most of their hit singles with a new reworking of the song: "All I Need Is A Miracle", that reached #27 on the UK Singles chart, a higher placing than that of the original version which peaked at #53 on the same chart. The album was certified platinum in the UK within two months of its release. In 2010, the band were revived with Mike Rutherford headlining a completely new set of musicians, including: Gary Wallis- drums, Anthony Drennan - guitar, Luke Juby- keyboard, Andrew Roachford- vocals and Tim Howar- vocals. The band would release three more albums: The Road (2011), Let Me Fly (2017) and Out Of The Blue (2019) as well as tour together. Currently there are no tour dates for Mike + The Mechanics in 2024. They last toured in 2023. Group Members Who Passed Away 🙏: Paul Young (June 17, 1947 - July 15, 2000) On July 15, 2000, having no symptoms, Paul Young had a sudden heart attack at around 6.30pm at his home in Hale, Altrincham, England, and passed away shortly afterwards at 53 years old. An autopsy revealed that the cause of passing was a heart attack and that "it was not the first one he had". His body was cremated and the ashes given to his family. ****CONTINUE BELOW****
