The Rolling Stones were really influenced by Muddy and came to the USA to find him. They named themselves in honour of him and Muddy was amazed at how respected he was by the English kids at the time .

The way the rolling stones got their name according to Keith Richards is that Brian Jones named the band during a phone when hew asked by a journalist for the band's name, Jones saw a Muddy Waters LP lying on the floor; one of the tracks was "Rollin' Stone".

Muddy Waters was first recorded playing acoustic guitar when he was a young man living on the Stovall Plantation in Mississippi where he was born by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress. He moved to Chicago and “electrified” the blues and influenced a whole generation of up and coming guitar players in America, England, and around the world. The Rolling Stones named their band after the line in the song you just reacted to.

Muddy Waters was a seasoned veteran of the Chicago Blues scene since the 1940s, and recorded for many years with Chess Records. In 1975, Chess Records went bankrupt, and by 1977, Muddy Waters was basically starting over with a new record label, Blue Sky Records, which was owned by white Blues guitarist Johnny Winter, who was a big fan of Muddy Waters. Muddy Waters recorded the 1977 album, "Hard Again", and Johnny Winter played the lead guitar on almost all of the recordings for this album, and for the rest of Muddy Waters' albums on the Blue Sky Records label until the time of Muddy Waters' death in 1983. Columbia Records distributed Waters' albums outside of the Chicago, Illinois market. Another Muddy Waters song from this album that I would like to see you react to, is for the song, "Deep Down In Florida". It is one of his best recordings that he ever made, in my opinion.

I saw Johnny Winter live four times, the thing that always struck me was that I believed him. I don't always 'believe' white blues players, if you know what I mean. They're tricksters. YOu see them at blues festivals a lot. Even headlining. They 'perform' the blues. But Johnny was for real.

I was in Fryfogles in London, Ontario celebrating a lady friend's birthday. She just turned 21 and I was a similar age. Muddy Waters was on stage. My friend asked me to come and sit at table with her as this guy was hitting on her and she wanted me to keep her company, turned out to Muddy's son. The only free chair was next to Muddy. I was in shock and nervous as heck sitting next to the great Bluesman. There was a bottle of wine in front of me. I picked it up and started to look at the label. He asked me if I knew what I was looking at. I proved I did. He laughed, poured me a glass and we started talking like old buddies that were a world apart in age and experience. I was to shy to ask about the old stories and he just wanted to talk about his grand kids. I hung on ever word. When he got up to do his next set, he asked me to stick around which of course I did. 45 years later and still one of the best experience's of my life.

Genevieve Van-Catledge Did you know a male blues singer made a response to Thornton’s Hound Dog called “Bear Cat ” by Rufus Thomas Jr, which was the guy’s response to Hound Dog. He was sued for it being to similar to the original. Also Big Mama Thornton didn’t get any royalties from Elvis’s version. She took it to court that she wrote the song, but lost. She was 95 pounds when she died at age 57 while living in a boarding house.

I think I was about 5 when I saw him perform this song at a south Florida blues festival. Until then I'd only heard gospel music and it totally blew my mind! This is the old Delta Blues going up to Chicago and starting to play electric guitar - result: Muddy Waters and a lot of other Chicago blues guys. And in the early 1960's there were young boy in England, boys with names like Keith Richards, Brian Jones and Mick Jagger, who listened a lot to Muddy Waters and this song in particular. They quoted a short phrase and made it the name of the rock band they were going to start - they called it: Rolling Stones.The rest is fuckin' history. So few people know the history of the music. When the Stones first hit big in the US, interviewers ask them what music they listened to and they mention led Muddy Waters and others. But the interviewers didn’t know those musicians were American because of the segregation, those musicians were what were called “race records” and not played by whites. The Memphis Museum of Rock and Soul in Memphis, Tennessee tells the story of American music in the 20th century and is one of the best museums I’ve ever visited. Oh man, I saw Muddy Waters live at a cool venue in Niagara Falls called the Imperial Garage, just shortly before he died. He was amazing! Talk about bring the house down! He brought his stool out and sat in the middle of the stage and jammed all night! So blessed to have seen him live!

I am going to comment before I have watched the video. Everyone needs to understand how important this man was. He was a tremendous influence in the blues scene and pretty much invented Chicago Blues. No one could do it quite like Muddy waters even though plenty tried. So many groups were influenced by this man and his music, from the beetles, the Yardbirds, the Rolling stones and more. They all loved him and looked up to him, because they know he paved the way for them. He wrote amazing songs and he was a great performer. One of the best.

One of the highlights of my life was sharing a stage with Muddy back in the 70s. We were his warm up band and he called me up to sing I Got My Mojo Working with him, which was also in my repetoire. And we danced the same dance :-D Yeah, one of the GREATS!

Muddy Waters inspired so many artists with his musical genius! Especially the young musicians in England , like Led Zeppelin , listen to When the Levee Breaks by Led Zepp and Robert Plants lead vocal, he loved Muddy Waters and visits down south where Muddy was from. Eric Clapton was Muddys best man at his wedding too. Ain’t nobody sang like Muddy Waters, for real this is Soul they played at Juke joints! We need juke joints today so we can be free and let our souls heal in this world today! I love that you are gettin this music, good job you are getting turned out now to the best music! Heres why: On a personal note I learned about Muddy Waters 11 years ago when I was in college I took an American music history course and he was one of the first names mentioned and when you study him and learn the Dynamics of what was going around on that time and how pertinent and how important his ways was it really is still relevant to today's life. I was the blues DJ on my college radio station. Muddy is the boss! Other artists to try are Buddy Guy with Junior Wells, Albert Collins, Albert King, Freddie King, Roy Buchanan, Gatemouth Brown, Paul Butterfield, Johnny Winter (whom you can hear yelling behind Muddy in this song), Samantha Fish, Joanna Connor, Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers (and look for Clapton playing with Duane Allman!!), and so on. Btw, I used to live in Indy.

I have seen Muddy Waters, perform, back in the 70's.... Also, he played a strong influence on the band members of The Rolling Stones, during their years, growing up, and they took their name from him, Rolling Stones.... This is our heritage young man. This is the foundation for all music in America. The Blues is where it all starts. All of the Rock and Soul and other kinds of music that you've been listening to in this country has its foundation in The Blues which comes from the Slave work songs that we sang to survive oppression. I'm glad to see you getting into this, and hope that exploring more of it comes about. Peace.
