Oh my goodness... I've just heard a young person say they've never heard of Nina Simone before but they're about to listen to her sing, "Feeling Good" for the first time... I'm so excited for him i had to stop the vid at 33secs to process my excitement... it is such an insanely giddy feeling to know someone is about to have their mind blown! I remember the first time i heard this song i was in my car and i had to pull over because i couldn't operate heavy machinery with that voice melting my mind. 😍

I absolutely love watching these boys listen to the greats for the first time, but I just don't understand how they have never heard of Nina Simone or several other artist they've done videos on. Nina Simone should be taught in the history books! They need to have classes at school on music appreciation to expose our youth to the culture and history.

I'm a few years older than you, but as a mid-60s gay man (who's originally from Gentry's home state) I agree. I first heard her when I was in elementary school -- like in 1961, '62? My sister had a record but no cover. "Forbidden Fruit" was the track that nailed it down for me -- "Eve and Adam had a garden, everything was great, then one day a voice said, 'Pardon, miss, my name is snake...'" I looked for that elpee and that track for years and years...finally found a British re-issue on CD several years ago. Hallelujah!!!

Hey, sweetheart- I had the privilege to see Miss Nina in concert - in the late 80's - she was ICONIC - dealt with a lot of racial prejudice back in the day -- she was an amazing concert pianist who was denied playing in the greatest halls in the U.S. - in later years, she lived in France - she was understandably bitter about the opportunities denied to her -- and very outspoken about that --she has so many fantastic songs -- one of my favorites is: My Baby Just Cares for Me - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4q2k4iFpNZnjMk - there are many versions, but this one is super-simple and features her piano talent - so many, many, great songs by Nina - she NEVER got the credit she deserved - she is worth doing some research!

With the way things are in the country at the moment, you should listen to her 60s protest song "Mississippi G-dd*mn." Ms Simone wrote that one. Although it's of a much lighter tone, her "Love Me or Leave Me" especially the classic live performance where the guitarist doing counterpoint can't quite keep up, is just...I mean. Just... My partner of 5 years dumped me (decades ago) and I spent 3 months listening to Janis Joplin and licking my wounds. Then I moved to a new house with my best (platonic) friend. We played Nina as we packed. We played Nina as we moved. We named the house Feeling Good and held a wake for her in that home when she passed. Even now I think of going back to Feeling Good.

Love you, young man, and I love Nine Simone. It made me laugh/cry when you had to get up and walk around. Yeah, Miss Nina will do that to you.

Watching that first time reaction to Nina Simone is like discovering her all over again. The emotions she evokes are pure and raw. Loving your exploration of ‘music’- this is what brings the world together. We all sing in different languages and genres but it unites us. I will be 67 soon and this is such a refreshing ‘show’. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Feelin' Good was the first song I ever heard by Nina Simone. I was passing a store and they were playing it. I stood there frozen with all those emotions you describe coursing through me, but I couldn't move. Then afterwards I dug up everything I could find on her. The way I felt was that her emotions were belying the words and I could feel her pain in spite of the words she was singing.

Nina Simone was a civil rights leader and this was a civil rights song.

Everything Nina Simone sang was a civil rights song although this song was actually written by two Englishmen for a Broadway musical. Ain't that a bitch?

I am so happy to see a new generation coming to appreciate the extraordinary Nina Simone. One of the absolute best there ever was, or ever will be. You should also listen to My Baby Just Cares For Me, and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (which she sang the original version, and the Animals did a cover of).

In 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft - Voyager 1 and 2 - to explore Jupiter, Saturn and beyond. Each carried a 12-inch gold plated record. Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode was on the record. The spacecraft are now more than 10 billion miles from Earth, beyond the reaches of our solar system. As far as anyone knows, the records are still intact, but no alien life has found them yet.

People! Nina simone was great. Classically trained pianist, who started singing jazz clubs because she wasnt allowed to play concert piano because of her color. She was a strong activist. Better listen to strange fruit and goddamn Mississippi. I've loved her for over 50 years.

I cant bring myself to ever recommend strange fruit because that song fucking kills me every time and I just can't bring myself to others to that deep ass sorrow. An important song for sure but Jesus. Its an open wound of a song.

She wasn't prevented from playing classical piano because of her color. There was an older neighbor in Tryon - Nina called this woman her white mama - who gave her piano lessons for free. That same woman and some other people in the community collected money to pay for Nina to go the Juliard, which she did. But more than anything, she wanted to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. After finally auditioning, she didn't make the cut. They told her she was very good, close to being accepted, but told she needed a little more work. One of the professors offered to tutor her for free until she was able to audition for the next term, but Nina said no. For the rest of her life she held a grudge, blaming her failure to get into Curtis on racism. The Curtis Institute had accepted black students for years, and there were some black female students enrolled at the time Nina auditioned, but she didn't know that. Anyway, everything happens for a reason, and maybe if she'd gotten her wish, she'd be a classical pianist and nobody would be able to enjoy her singing. Her loss was our gain. BTW it was while singing in clubs that Eunice Waymon changed her name to Nina Simone. She knew her parents wouldn't approve of that job, so she used the stage name.
@margochristensen63593 жыл бұрын
@@juansierralonche9864 thank you. When I saw her playing at Lenny's on the Pike, I guess she still held the grudge.

Nina Simone is, IMO, the most important and talented singer in American history. She did a lot with the civil rights movement. This song is about victories and hope. Mississippi Goddamn is about the the murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi and the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham that killed four black girls.
