One of the few"rock songs"my dad didn't mind me listening to when I was really, really little. For a great song using a southern gospel tune with anti racism message, try Elvis Presley's Walk a mile in my shoes Live

One of my favorite one-hit-wonders. This song was in a lot of Vietnam era movies.

Memories of listening to this on my 9V Transistor Radio (AM of course, we didn't have FM stations yet) laying out in the sun on hot summer days at the ripe old age of 13. Good days....❤

Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner had a country gospel hour tv show where they would sing gospel songs and collect contributions from callers to the station. This was back in the early 60's. Norman Greenbaum was kinda poking fun at them with this song, since he is Jewish. Either way, we all loved the boogie beat, sounding like ZZTop's "La Grange", and that tube amplifier on overdrive. This song rocked then and now!

One hit wonder. Norman Greenbaum is still living off the residuals from this song. Norman threw Jesus in there to make it more commercially accessible. He's Jewish, himself.

The only question that remains is: Where did they get a photo of Jesus? And who took it?? This great classic used to dominate in juke boxes.

He was Jewish and this was a sort of jab at Christians. Still, the song is good. So many think it’s a Christian song but it’s really not at all. Just by the Title- “The Spirit……” is the clue. Jesus wasn’t/isn’t a spirit. Also the line “I’m not a sinner; I’ve never sinned” is the line in the song that makes it clear he’s making fun of Christians. Because we all know we sin. That’s why Jesus died on the cross for us.
