Oh wow, totally didn't expect this. Love Phoebe Snow, especially the Second Childhood album. RIP I think her music is a mix of folk/jazz.

Phoebe, an this song, was a lot of things but not country. I think you went with the acoustic guitar sound. Bluesy, Folksy with soulful vocals.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever written/sung. Because her voice was so soulful, a lot of people thought Phoebe was African-American, but she was in fact Jewish! Check out her song "Love Makes A Woman" 🔥

I connected a penny cathode receiver back in the 70’s (long wire to ground and a safety pin connected to a tarnished penny) and this is one of many songs I listened to as I would fall asleep back then. Truly memorable.

Country music??? Try folk jazz, contemporary pop. Having been a lifelong fan of Miss Snow since 1975, I can't think of an actual "country" song she has sung; yet it's the rhythm & blues, and acoustic folk guitar that's her musical signature. She's got a three octave vocal range, and man she can belt out some black gospel! Phoebe's rendition of Etta James' At Least, will make any listener a believer. Sadly she passed away just a few years ago. Check out her other great songs "Harpo's Blues", "Good Times Roll", "No Regrets", "Two Fisted Love", and her duet w Paul Simon, "Gone At Last". Peace

That stand up country style BASS sound is incredible with her beautiful voice. Two years later, another singer songwriter use that same Country Style standup Bass. Actor David Carradine used that same "down in the gut" sound on his big hit, I'm Easy, in 1976. Two super songs of the 70s.

@@kenperk9854 the stand up bass, also known as a double bass. It's popularity is most associated w jazz, blues, rockabilly, zydeco, and bluegrass. In Phoebe's song Poetry Man, it's being played as a jazz accompaniment.

Phoebe Snow is a stellar talent that a great deal many more people should know about!! A wonderful singer with a jazz background and an amazing range and songwriting ability. I love the phrasing she uses on those 'oooh yeah yeah' parts. Sounds like a horn player's phrasing. I think you are confusing genres because of the acoustic vibe of the song, but It's def jazz, not country. Cheap Thrills, Shakey Ground, Love Makes a Woman, It Must Be Sunday...are some of my favorite tracks from this amazing artist.

Another rabbit hole! I could recommend 5 different Phoebe Snow songs, and you'd be totally confused. When she does jazz, you'd swear that's her specialty. But then she does straight up funky soul just as legit. Same for Soft Rock, Pop and Gospel. She was a chameleon. If you get a chance, check out "All Over" and "Shakey Ground".

I want to scold Just Jammin for labeling "Poetry Man" as a Country tune. But, I see several comments where people label it folk, rock, and jazz. So why not Country too, if you find some connection to the song with what you know to be Country? We do not need to always put music in a categorical box. Music is for everyone. It simply wants to be heard. It does not need a label. Music stands on its own.

Child you kill me. Everytime you can't figure out a "genre" you think its country music. Black folk don't rock with country like that. You need to go listen to country music and figure out why you always want to think we do that. I am not hating on all country music - hell, I like a couple of artists, but the sound and singing are completey different. I really, really wish you would explore these 'genre's' you are so fixated on. Then realize that it's just music with categories (Gospel, R&B/Soul, Jazz, Funk, Rock (which is black made into a money making scheme for white 'singers/musicians') and Classical. Get into our legacy/history and you'll understand the music even more. Love you - keep learning.
