Ja,...Stand-up Bass ist another term used by western culture (mostly das Americans only) when referring to a Double Bass. :-) Das second most used term for a Double Bass ist Violin Bass because it ist member of das Violin family stringed instruments. FYI...For anyone not aware? Guitars (electric, acoustic, bass, banjo, etc.) are members of das stringed instrument family,...but das Violin stringed family (violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp) are their own family grouping of stringed instruments separate from das now much larger stringed family. Why? Because these family groupings were established by das people who invented, constructed, played, und named most of these musical instruments. I've played Violin since age 8, Cello at age 10, und I'm not sure why whoever made such choices of stringed instrument grouping, but they are in stone. :-) Have a fun day. I love the Police! All three members are so talented but, of course, Sting the lead singer, is amazing! He has the one of the most recognizable voices in Rock! His solo career is amazing as well! Sting is playing an Upright Base in this video which is bigger than a Cello. This song is about obsession, Sting, himself, says its not a love song at all! This song was released in 1983.

The bass is a part of the classical orchestra, along with a cello section, adding the lowest end of the music (AKA commonly called a 'stand-up bass' when associated with jazz, country music and early era rock 'n' roll. It tended to be superseded a lot in those particular popular music genres after the invention of the electric bass, which was more practical as a touring instrument and could be much louder and punchier in a big band setting and to compete equally with the development of bigger and louder drumkits.) It's played standing and by plucking the strings. The cello is a bit smaller and is a classical music instrument, played sat down and usually played with a bow, but they can also be played plucking the strings which is called pizzicato when played rhythmically with sustained notes, or staccato when it is very shortened, often repetitive, clean notes. The stand up bass comes in a variety of sizes which are chosen to match the height of the player.

Ja,...Stand-up Bass ist another term used by western culture (mostly das Americans only) when referring to a Double Bass. :-) However das second most common term for a Double Bass ist Violin Bass because it ist member of das Violin family stringed instruments. Cello ist a joining of Violin und Double Bass with of course their main differences of size und range of sound tone (strings). Das word Cello ist Italian meaning "small Double Bass". Ja, you are correct about Pizzicato und Staccato of course, but to mention a Cello can be played Pizzicato (plucked), und a Double Bass can be played Arco (bowed). A Double Bass sounds quite good when it ist bowed, it sounds similar to Cello that has been drinking too much bier (intoxicated Cello)...giggles I have a Russian friend who can bow electric guitar sounding exceptionally awesome. :-) I'm quite happy to see many of das Violin Stringed instruments finally get "plugged in". Das Double Bass und it's electric evolution ist much apart of current Rock music as "all" other stringed, horn, & percussion instruments have become. Rock music's many evolution uses every known instrument, every known chord progression, every playing technique that includes all other genre of music, und has always expressed such wonderful story-telling. Rock symphony ist Rock music's newest evolution. FYI...For anyone who may not be aware? Guitars (electric, acoustic, bass, banjo, ukulele, etc.) are members of das stringed instrument family, but das Violin stringed family (violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp) are their own family of stringed instruments separate from das now much larger stringed family. Why? Because these family groupings were established by das people who invented, constructed, played, und named most of these musical instruments? I've played Violin since age 8, Cello at age 10, und I'm not sure why whoever made such choices of family grouping either. :-) I certainly would not wish to pay das lunch cost for someone who could hold a Cello or Double Bass to their chin while bowing it...giggles It ist possibly a historical timeline thing, though different types of "guitar" have existed since at least das Medieval Period, so that doesn't quite fit either. Possibly someone has enough interest to gather research und post it here. I have chores in das stables that need tending before it ist late...gotta go. :-) Have a fun day. Be safe. Auf Wiedersehen aus Wiesbaden :-)

Written by Sting. Produced by The Police + Hugh Padghem. 1983. Sting: lead vocal, bass, synthesizers. Andy Summers: guitar, piano. Stewart Copeland: drums. The Police: backing vocals. Godley + Creme: direction of the video. Andy graduated from CSU Northridge in 1972. Stewart is the only American. 🇺🇲 Sting + Andy are British. 🇬🇧 The Police were in The Bahamas. Sting + Stewart Copeland were constantly arguing + laying temper tantrums. The infighting was so bad that Andy Summers left the house to look for help. Luckily, the late George Martin, producer of The Beatles, was nearby. Andy talked to George. His advice was relayed to Andy. Then, Andy returned. Sting + Stew stopped their bickering for the meantime. Meanwhile, Spandau Ballet was working on their album True on another side of the island! 😃 SB was on the rise! 🤯 1 year later, Sting met Spandau Ballet at the Band Aid recording session, London, UK. 🇬🇧 Yet, The Police was slowly breaking up. 😖😖😖 Sting + Stew could not even agree on how to play Every Breath You Take. 😖 This was a song on the final full studio album. Information c/o Andy Summers: I was at his book signing! 😃 Do not think of EBYT as only a stalker song: think of it as a break up of The Police + wishing the band was like it was on their 1st album. Sample. Puff Daddy sampled this. He made his rap into a tribute of Biggie Smalls. Guest singer is Faith Evans, widow of Biggie. RIP Biggie, Sir George Martin. Suggested next Police video: Synchronicity 2. 🎸🥁👨‍🎤🎸🎹 🇬🇧🇺🇲

Played in bands for years and there’s moments when you hit a groove with each other that’s transcendent. I say that without exaggeration. There’s an energy that everyone feels when you lock in with one another and the musical threads come together. I always think about that when I hear this song, especially toward then end when the symbol hits double time and the harmonizing backup vocals drop in. If I was in their band I would have shed a tear the first time we rocked it because I feel it so deeply.

The stand up bass was used in jazz, blues, and early rock-n-roll before it was made electric. If you watch early Elvis or songs from the 5o's you will see its presence. This song was recorded in 1983. The black and white was done for dramatic purposes. If you want a stalker song listen to Blondie tell you about one that troubled her in their hit song, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

That’s an electric guitar that is main riff or figure you hear you hear that sounds a bit different due to a technique called palm muting where the strings are partially muted so that the strings don’t ring out fully. This song made that kind of guitar sound pretty popular in the 80’s and you can hear it in other songs of that period. All styles of guitar playing use the technique to one degree or another, but this is pretty pronounced.

4:03 it’s the electric guitar, but the guitarist has his picking hand pressed against the strings to mute them a little and not let them ring out, giving that short choppy note sound.

Easily gets my vote as the most misunderstood song of all time. Wonder how many weddings this was played at that they had no idea that it's about a stalker lol? But, just a great band. Saw em open up for The Knack in a local club back in the day. "My Sharona" was just starting to really gain steam, and The Police's "Roxanne" hadn't really popped yet. Lol, back when the homemade ID's I was pretty good at making still worked lol.

Sting wrote it as a stalker song, so they were surprised when people started using it for their wedding song!! Lol

"CANARY IN A COALMINE" by these guys is another must listen to track - there's a fan made clip of this song on YT, with the boys showing off their dance moves. ("EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE" by The Police was released as a single in 1983...).

Those of us that are older, 50 to 70 year old, that were young and loved these original classic, when we hear the rap or covers that sample these songs we either love them because we loved the originals, or hate them because we think it’s stealing and we think they sampled songs will never dare to compare with the originals. Me being a long time Police fan thinks the latter..

Asia you can sing girl!! 🤩 That WAS a stalker song. Just ask Sting. 😄 He truly was multi talented. Did you know he was one of the main characters the movie Dune? Adapted from a Frank Herbert novel series. Not a really great movie because of the low quality special effects, but I liked it just the same. 😎 Great reaction. 💖

Sting is playing a double bass. Very similar to a cello.

It was about obsession. But the beat and melody is great. The song has held up over time. I think it came out in 1983. By the way, Asia you have a nice vioce

It's actually a "bass" (pronounced Base). They're a little larger than a cello. You heard of alot bass in swing music. YES - that bass riff is what he's playing. I read a song-fact that the bass player who recorded this on the track makes $2000 a DAY in royalties. Check out "STRAY CATS" band from the 80s that used a swing sound to their music. Brian Setzer was a musical genius. Songs: Stray Cat Strut, Rock This Town

Les Claypool with Primus plays both the bass guitar and upright bass incredibly. Primus song Jilly's On Smack live KZbin video 2.9m views, Les plays an electric upright bass from outer space. Primus is another band you must check out, start with Winona's Big Brown Beaver. You'll be impressed musically and laugh your ass off at the same time. There is no way to describe Primus. BJ may know who they are because of his familiarity with some 90s rock music.

If you want to react some other songs from Sting - you can do "Englishman in New York" - it was his most popular track back in the day.... However, later the most popular ones were "Desert Rose" and "Shape of My Heart"... The last one was a soundtrack to a very very good movie - Leon the Professional

Roxanne is a good one to check out by The Police. Cam'ron had a song back in the early 2000's that used the beat from it. Name of that song was What Means The World To You.

It is not a cello nor a stand up bass. The correct tern is double bass. It sounds like Sting is actually playing an electric bass guitar and not a double bass. The Police came out in the late 1970s and this song is from about 1982 or so.

The 3 top singles for the 80s were this, Sledgehammer, by Peter Gabriel, and Sweet Dreams are made of this by the Eurythmics. STING is the singer, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums. ALL 3 were extremely talented musicians, especially Copeland, considered one of the best drummers ever.

Sorry BJ but Sting is playing a double bass which is the biggest of the stringed instruments. I was privileged to watch Police play at at Wembley in the 80's. He also at one point played it like a bass guitar They were AMAZING musicians !!!!!
