The song is from 1907 when Poland was under German, Russian and Austrian rule. Almost won to be an anthem but it's not.

Yeah. The poem that serves as the lyrics was written by a lesbian. Maria Konopnicka spent her last 20+ years with Maria Dulębianka(short hair having, frock coat wearing, horseback riding, avid hunter... typical butch). Not all of the Catholic, holier-than-thou, anti-lgbt, backwards men in power back then, or even now, would accept such an "indecent/sinful" source for a national anthem. If you ask me, it's better than the Dąbrowski Mazurka, but it's too focused on alienating us from our neighbors, driving the conflict further. And focuses on our neighbors to the west, without as much as mentioning our massive enemy to the east.

Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Polish military engineer who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, held progressive views for his time regarding black slaves. He believed in the abolition of slavery and saw it as a moral and human rights issue. Deeply affected by the plight of African slaves, he made a poignant effort to address this injustice through his will. Kosciuszko was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, whom he admired for his Enlightenment ideals. However, he was concerned about the contradiction between Jefferson’s proclaimed ideals of liberty and his ownership of slaves. In an attempt to reconcile these contradictions and promote the cause of abolition, Kosciuszko wrote a will in 1798 where he left his American estate to Jefferson. The specific instruction was to use the funds to purchase and free slaves, including providing them with education and land to support their independence. This bequest illustrates Kosciuszko’s commitment to not just fighting for freedom in a general sense, but ensuring it reached those who were denied it most starkly. Unfortunately, Jefferson never executed the terms of Kosciuszko’s will, and the intended funds were never used to free and establish the slaves in a self-sufficient life. This episode reflects the complexities and limitations of advocacy for abolition during that period, as well as the personal contradictions of figures like Jefferson. Kosciuszko’s legacy, therefore, remains as a poignant reminder of the early efforts to challenge the institution of slavery in the nascent United States.

The Teutonic Order slowly manipulated it's way into Poland in the 13th century. In 1410 the was a huge battle won by Poland. It wasn't until 1525 when a peace treaty was formed and the Prussian ruler of the TO had to pay homage to the Polish king. That's why the lyrics are so harsh against Germans. Our country has been at war with Germans on and off for hundreds of years due to tem trying to invade us. At some point Poland has been partitioned even and we regained our independence in 1918 after 123 years of our land being divided between 3 other countries.

In fact, it is a poem by Maria Konopnicka, a famous Polish writer. It was written in 1907/1908. Note the year the poem was written. It was a time when Poland was erased from the world map. The mentioned Germany was one of the aggressors. Poland then did not exist for 123 years. The text literally describes what happened during this captivity. There is also a reference to the Teutonic Knights, who were Germans and who were brutal and greedy, hence Poland fought a war with them in the 15th century, which lasted 13 years (in the town of Grunwald in 1410, the largest battle of the Middle Ages took place between the Teutonic Knights, the Kingdom of Poland and the Duchy of Lithuania). In 1910, the Polish composer Filip Nowowiejski composed music to this poem. The whole thing is a longing for a free Poland. It is not the Polish national anthem, but the music and lyrics have the character of an anthem. Usually, Poles stand up while singing "Rota".

Poland is a country of tradition, faith, memory, fight for a good name and historical truth. It was always uphill due to the geopolitical location. Unfortunately, many people live there, enchanted by the apparent wealth of the West, worthless modernity, and some people abandon these values, especially because of the anti-Polish policy that disgusts our history and faith in foreign media in Poland. However, real Poles fight and will fight.

The word "rota," meaning "text, formula of a vow or oath," is a very old word. It appears with this meaning in other Slavic languages as well, and it derives from the Proto-Slavic word *rota, meaning "oath, spell."

It sounds better on 1.5 speed. I might be committing blasphemy here, knowing how important this song is for my nation (and me, too), but really, a little bit of speed and you start to hear triumph instead of mourning.

Jeśli patriotyczne, to pasowałoby wstać. A nie sobie Colę popijać. Mam znajomych w różnych krajach Europy, rozmawialiśmy czasem nawet przy trunkach. Zawsze jeśli jest temat pieśni... chorwackiej, włoskiej, Słowackiej. To wypada jednak wstać i wysłuchać Z szacunkiem.
