Dark Matter has one of my all time favorite guitar solos. Been a fan of this band/Steven Wilson since the mid 90's. A musical genius who doesn't get near enough acclaim for the music he has created for the past 40 years.

Dark matter was an album closer and the words at the end relate to words at the beginning bookending the album Signify. At this stage Edwin (bass) Barbieri (Keys) and Maitland (drums ) were full band members but the first two also played as guest musicians on the earlier album Up the Downstair from which ‘Fadeaway’ comes.

Well Brandon I’ve gotta say, you’re batting a thousand. PT is a very special band that I first got into back in the summer of ‘01. And believe it or not, it was “ Dark Matter “ that drew my attention before anything else. Yes, without a doubt these guys were influenced by Floyd, especially the Gilmour style of play that Wilson carries through so beautifully. I could go on all day about this uniquely talented group. For a long time, they were overlooked but since their release of “ In Absentia “ in ‘ 02, they’ve really picked up some steam on getting noticed. And it was high time. Really glad you covered them. I really believe PT is the ultimate prog band since the early ‘ 90s. Dark Matter is a fantastic song as well as Fadeaway. You should hear “ The Sky Moves Sideways. “ It’s unforgettable.

@Retro Reactions Yeah I may have missed that one but I'm very familiar with that song. It's one of the earliest tunes and a good one at that. But this band has quite a truckload of quality songs as you'll discover.

@@retroreactions.... no…discovered them during the pandemic…..only knew a couple of their songs, like you. But loved what I heard, and thought you would too. First song I heard was Anesthetize, which blew me away. But it’s about 15 minutes long…..also, it came out after 2000. But you should listen on your own……amazing.

Two excellent choices!! As someone stated already, PT is better live. But for Fadeaway, there is a live version that features John Wesley on lead vocals. He was usually touring with PT as the vocal backup and played guitar. And Dark Matter is incredible live from the Anesthetize concert…...

You need to listen to the version where Steven Wilson's guitar player sings Fadeaway live. His voice is an octave higher and sounds more trancy.

Fadeaway. This version has Gavin Harrison on drums. The earlier version has drum programming by Wilson , which I prefer and would recommend you check out . Dark Matter . This features Chris Maitland on the drums. Not as technical as Harrison , however in a live context , Maitland was a wonderfully visual drummer with great harmony vocals. To think , back in the day , my wife and myself would watch these guys in pubs (bars) , clubs and church halls with 50 to a 100 people in the audience !!

I also prefer the original version of the album with the drum machine although the remixed version with Gavin Harrison's drum parts does not contain any glaring difference in terms of rhythmic figures, but I found that the initial version of the album released in 1993 with a slightly different mix had more charm and magic. Nothing too disturbing in the end, but for those who knew the original version, it may lose some of its appeal. As for Chris Maitland, I prefer him to Gavin Harrison, the latter certainly an excellent drummer but whose drumming is sometimes a little too demonstrative for my taste. Having seen Porcupine Tree live with its two different line ups, I have to say that I liked the prog-space rock-psychedelic orientation better than when Wilson introduced a bit of metal into the band's music from the album In Absentia.

Barbieri is not credited on this track for synths. On the album he is only credited on the track Up the Downstair for synths. Steven Wilson is himself actually an accomplished synth player/programmer. His first band No Man was a synth duo. Most of the synth work up until Signify (including half of the album The Sky Moves Sideways) was Steven Wilson.

As always a great reaction, Brandon! Really getting into PT now - not bad for a joke band! The band's output gets progressively stronger and impactful with the years. Early stuff very PF inspired - If you would like a 4-side long 90s variant of PF's Echos; that's "Sky Moves Sideways" - with a nod to time travelling, rather like your channel (...I've seen people ask "Why is the Tardis on the cover red??"). Arguably PT's best work was early '00s "In Absentia" esp. the live versions (always go with "live from Tilburg" if poss; awsome) and then the very excellent "Fear of a Blank Planet"; again excellent with a heavier sound. PT by now have a world-leading drummer (Gavin Harrison) not on the earlier records. Gavin is up there with Danny Carey of Tool; can pull out some astonishing fills and on the nose heavy work which sounds awesome. (try c. 30 secs from a Tilburg session: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKPGlX2smdydsLc _to be played LOUD, this is not Echos..._ Oh No! Another reaction channel! ) FYI with PT's break up (2008??) Gavin Harrison went to play with The Pineapple Thief, another band definitely work looking at some time. PT now back together again, less Colin Edwin the bassist. Some subtle and very dope bass work going on there, with more prominence on later tracks. :)

You are both in for a trip. Although Brandon will have to open up his envelope to the 2000s to take in the development of the band to an even higher level as they bring in a broader generic influence to combine with these brilliant floydian soundscapes to deliver all time progressive music classics like ‘Arriving somewhere but not here’ and ‘Anesthetise’.

Richard is on fire again in these tracks building such a thick and soothing ambiance that envelopes you. Brilliant band and am so enjoying that you have discovered the earlier atmospheric work first as so many reactors have fixated of the later rockier work (no less brilliant) and never sought to track back to the early albums. A great instrumental deep cut which I know you would love is ‘Yellow hedgerow Dreamscape’ from the ‘staircase infinities’ companion disc to ‘Up the Downstair’ (from which Fadeaway comes). Please give it a go, on or off the channel and let me know what you think.
