Fadeaway is from the album Up The Downstair (1993). It was the second full length P.T. release. At this time Porcupine Tree was primarily Steven Wilson on his own though Richard Barbieri and Colin Edwin did make their first appearances on a Porcupine Tree album at this time. A drum machine was used for percussion. Years later Gavin Harrison recorded drums for the album which Steven then remixed.

I was lucky enough to see them perform Pt1 at Radio City Music Hall years ago. Such a great song.

So good to hear older PT material being covered. Their back catalogue is so varied, innovative and strong. Stars Die is actually a compilation album covering their early years. Fadeaway originally features on the album 'Up The Downstair'. The future of the group is still not finally decided, but I hope they keep going. Their live shows this year were amazing.

The Sky Moves Sideways is like a blend of Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream, freaking beautiful and powerful song.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the Porcupine Tree music that I fell in love with: epic; eclectic; and truly Floydian.

HI again, "Stars Die" is an amazing album which has tracks remastered from other albums. If you think those sounded like Pink Floyd you should hear "Voyage 34 Phase 1". Lol Quite a trip. [ Pun intended - for those who know ] The albums are much clearer and don't have the compression of digital playback, so the vocals on "Fadeaway" is much better. Although I do have a good hi-fi system with a mid range dial along with bass & treble. On digital on my computer I do tend to alter a graphic equalizer via my media player, when I need to, that's when I download a song occasionally. This was a great marathon. Let's hope we get more early P.T ... That album "Stars Die" is brilliant as it's like a best of compilation. Byee Jim X

Right up my alley this, can't go wrong with PT.

I am here for it! Love that you’re doing the older PT. Maybe you’ll get to Small Fish. Sends shivers through your soul. From Up The Downstairs. It’s actually Not Beautiful Anymore/Siren/Small Fish. Like a mini suite. (Which, by the way leads right into Burning Sky/Fadeaway which I see is on tap here)You’ll love it. But thanks to Eric for this one!

I too am a latecomer to PT thanks to someone’s recommendation in the comments on a video from N&L a couple of years ago. Very lucky to time their reformation and see them live in London last year. Have everything by them and SW now! Superb band.

I'm a latecomer to PT and Steven Wilson, having recently acquired Fear Of A Blank Planet and The Raven.... thanks wholly to this super channel. So this was a great trip for me, down the road to early Porcupine Tree and I loved both pieces! I'm going to have to introduce these albums to my collection. Thanks Eric and Nick, that was beautiful.

Thank you for this wonderful reaction, Nick. I appreciate how you can relate to so many different types of music. But I guess that's part of what prog and fusion are all about 😊

TSMS was a transistional album for PT. It was recorded as the idea of PT was moving from an SW solo project to being an actual band. SW himself considers the next album, Signify, as the first real PT album.

Thanks,I'm all over more recent PT but you introduced some early stuff so I listened. Most excellent. I love the newer stuff so much I just relisten, repeatedly. I came to PT late, only after I saw Gavin Harrison. I'm a drummer and looked into Gavin .... and OMG PT!

I've read quite a few comments from people stating that Steven Wilson took PT in a different direction after the first several albums, but I've never taken the time to look for and listen to the early material. I've heard it described as psychedelic rock, which, based on this sample of the earlier works, seems fair enough. For me, the band really hit its stride with "In Absentia" and subsequest releases. But I'll give it some credit for the earlier stuff. It is cerainly more interesting than early Yes or early Marillion. Some people just seem to have a knack for imagining songs in their head, then making them come to life. Steven Wilson is one of them. To look at this from another angle, lots of people learn how to competently play an instrument. They join a band. If nobody in the band has the knack of imagining great songs, those bands never catch on with the music-listening public.

:) so good... a Time Travelling experience. With a tip of the cap to Doctor Who on the cover of Sky Moves Sideways. This is a 4-sided album (and the first LP I bought after being a CD guy for 30-odd years). PLEASE react to the rest - you won't regret that, and Lex might like to ride along too!

"The Sky Moves Sideways Phase 1" is much better on the live album Coma Divine (recorded in Rome in 97). Curiously, while Porcupine Tree has become a real band since December 93, Chris Maitland does not play any drums on this studio version but only percussion over a drum machine programmed by Steven Wilson! (preposterous idea from Wilson when he had a drummer available). Of this studio version I really only like the ethereal coda entitled "Spiral Circus" (which is not played in its live version). Try the live version on the Coma Divine album with Chris Maitland on drums and you'll hear the difference ! "Fadeaway" originally comes from the studio album Up the Downstair recorded in 92/93 (Stars Die is a song which appeared as a single and on the EP Moonloop in 94. It is also the name of a double compilation tracing the first years of PT from 91 to 97, on which "Fadeway" is included). Steven Wilson plays all the instruments on "Fadeaway", except the drums added by Gavin Harrison in 2005 for the remixed and remastered edition of Up the Downstair, when it was a drum machine on the original version released in 93.

As much as I love PT from In Absentia and onwards including SW's solo project - there's just something about the old PT that resonates with me on a deeper level.

Stars Die is a best of compilation from their years on the Delerium label. Make a one song marathon of their first single Voyage 34 which at 30 minutes and four seconds didn't get any airplay on the radio, it's very Pink Floyd and in my opinion their best piece of music. Also check out Steven Wilsons other music project No Man especially the song Angel Gets Caught In The Beauty Trap from the Flowermouth album and the title track from Together We're Stranger.

As someone who has been a fan of PT since the first album and saw them live early on, their 90’s period was far and away their best to my ears. Of course this is a matter of taste as I much prefer psychedelic rock to the sort of song oriented prog metal stylings that popped up in some of their later work. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but this was not really the same band and music that I came to love early on. Another good example of this that comes to mind is Strawbs, who started out as folk/psychedelic outfit at the end if the 60’s and morphed along with some personal changes into something very different and much more progressive. Nothing wrong with that either but I also prefer their earlier incarnation. Nice work Eric T in highlighting some of PT’s earlier and best work.

u.t for some unknown reason are removing my comments....as you can see I wrote a 2nd comment .. "Hi again" ...yet my original comment is gone. It isn't just this channel they are doing it on others like movie dvd reviews I watch. It's only going back that I see what has happened. I wonder how many more that I did not look at again have removed my comments ?

Happens to me too VERY randomly, for years. I've told this to N&L too but I have to believe Yt "knows" and they set algorithms to delete comments with certain words, cut & pasted quotes, added links, etc. The weird one for me is, ANY Rush reaction, I can't add a "link" to my comment _about_ Rush, or it doesn't let my comment stay up 🤔. There was awhile that I'd post at Rick Beato videos, I could see it, but if I looked on my other channel, it wasn't there :(. Rick even emailed me back that his friend, guitarist Frank Gambale thought Rick was deleting his comments, and he responded; "Frank, why would I do that?". So it happens to everyone 😕.

I like Porcupine Tree a lot, and both songs were enjoyable, but I found the first song a bit repetitive and a little too long. I liked the second song better, but they were both good; I just like other, harder songs by them more. ❤✌

The thing I came to learn was, it was to sit back/lay down, and just let my headphones take over. I wasn't into this kind of music say 15 years ago . . . but I came to enjoy it. I now have a Playlist specifically to relax in the dark, especially when I have trouble sleeping. Kind of what I used to do (with sound fx, dialogue, etc.) with Cassettes and music that would be a bit chill, progressive (Rock) and that I could imagine being under a starry night :).

When these albums debuted . . . I'd probably not get into them. It wasn't my thing _yet._ I have since put them on a playlist that was for my girlfriend back in 2013, and when I was having trouble relaxing to go to sleep. Which is funny that I am just now replacing deleted tracks (that I can remember) and adding more to it. Steven has talked about what got him into the direction of "Signify" and especially "In Absentia" being influenced by Prog Metal, and Dream Theater, Opeth and Meshuggah (and even introducing their music to the band). People used to argue with me online (:P) that I could hear the direct correlations with the more obscure Pink Floyd, but he added that almost "Lounge" & "Chill" vibe and Electronica, yet made it unique. But seeing a track off In Absentia from an episode of "Smallville" helped when 1st seeing the CD at a Used Record store, bought it and at 1st didn't know what to make of this NEW "Sound" and band I had never heard of at the time, almost Prog Metal, but atypical Progressive Rock . . . it was intriguing, but it made me a fan :). - Thanks Eric T & Nick! I'm SURE Lexi is enjoying this era of Porky Tree, and probably SUPER surprised :).
