After you guys hyped it aws a suggestion, I was beyond excited to finally listen to Prince's legendary track "Purple Rain" for the first time. In this video, you'll see my genuine reaction and hear my thoughts on the song's powerful lyrics and dynamic sound.
As we dive into Prince's incredible career, we'll also discuss some of his memorable music videos, hit songs, and his impact on the music industry. We'll also explore his famous name change to "The artist formerly known as Prince" and the symbol he used in place of his name.
Of course, we'll also be diving deep into the music video for "Purple Rain" which as it turns out is part of a musical! And that the song was originally meant for Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. We'll explore its beautiful cinematography, symbolism, and the memorable performance by Prince himself.
So, whether you're a die-hard Prince fan or simply looking for a new musical experience, join me for this exciting journey and subscribe for more music reviews and reactions!

Prince beat Mozart, he mastered over 14 instruments by age 17, he could dance, sing any note, rap, he wrote, arranged, performed ALL his music, including wrote hits for other artists, he has covered almost every genre, Metal, Punk rock, hip hop, pop, r&b, soul, jazz, blues, country, ambience, classical, instrumental. The Multi-Genre God. He could play anything, and your favorite artists have been deeply influenced by him. Corey Taylor, Whitney Houston, Steve Vai, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Lil uzi vert, H.E.R. , Paul Mccartney, all worship Prince to just name a few. Prince recorded his first 2 albums at 16 all by himself, all instruments, lyrics, arrangement, composition & vocals were all by him. He was such a prodigy, that music executives wanted proof, they would fly across country just to see if he could really play all instruments, because it was so unheard of. Prince has over 50 official released albums and when he passed, they found over 10 thousand unreleased Prince music in his vault. He then came into the business and was the FIRST to fight for artists rights, and he WON. He would write "slave" on his cheek and go to meetings protesting against the industry. Prince was also the first artist to sell his music on the internet. You are talking about the most talented artist we will ever see.

Purple Rain is amazing - I saw it in theatres. I remember having to lie about my age to get in, because I was only 15 and you needed to be 17 to get into rated R movies! Powerful, but not a musical in the sense you're thinking. The music is all on stage or studio, not random people starting to sing. Each 'musical number' is a performance in the narrative of the movie. Prince was SO talented. Hundreds, maybe thousands of songs. He helped lots of artists make their start, including Sinéad O'Connor. He wrote the song that made her famous, Nothing Compares 2 U.

Prince wrote a huge number of songs. Supposedly he left behind a big trove of unpublished music when he died. He wrote a lot of songs for other artists, including Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor, Sugar Walls by Sheena Easton, You're My Love by Kenny Rogers, Manic Monday by The Bangles, With This Tear by Celine Dion, Why Should I Love You? by Kate Bush, and I Feel for You (originally written for Patrice Rushen but made famous by Chaka Khan). There's a story that someone once asked Eric Clapton how it felt to be the world's best guitarist, and he replied, "I don't know. Ask Prince." It's not true. Too bad, as it's a great story. This emphasis on image, I think, was an important component for an artist in the 80s as MTV was such a useful and powerful tool. Prince was and always will be iconic. He was larger than life and all of his music was extraordinary. He wrote MANY huge hits for many artists. He wrote, " Nothing compares to you", sung by Sinead O'Conner, "Umbrella", sung by Rhianna. There are way too many to mention. He lived in Minneapolis Minnesota and this movie was made there. You must see the movie and get the album. Prince was one of my all time favorites. The day he passed nearly destroyed me. Such a legend, gone too soon. His legacy lives on. ❤

@@glennelfmann3143 I realize paisley park isn't in Minneapolis but First Ave and many of the venues he played at are. Just saying he was a MN man who I believe was raised in Minneapolis? I could ve wrong, either way, he's iconic. He's written so many good songs for other artists that were huge hits. I was lucky enough to see him in concert and he did not disappoint. I grew up in the 70's and 80's so Prince and his music were the soundtrack of my teen years and school years. His songs always bring back fond memories. Another interesting piece of history. My ex boyfriend's brother who lives in Minneapolis now and has for years was an extra in Purple Rain. ❤️ His halftime performance during super bowl XLI was one of the greatest ever.

this man was vastly talented. like even more talented than i think people give him credit for. the guy wrote his own hits as well as hits for several other artists. people tend to sleep on his abilities as a guitar player and see him as a pop star from the 80's, but the purple one was quite capable of shredding a face or two as the need arose. one of my favorite performances of his was at george harrison's induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. he and several other legends in the music world did a version of "while my guitar gently weeps" that will have you weeping right along with said guitars. do NOT watch this video yet, watch a few other prince videos and charlie murphy's true hollywood stories from the dave chappelle show where he talks about hanging out with prince..... once you have all that context, then watch his performance at the induction. it'll blow your mind.

It's mind-blowing to think of you never having heard anything by Prince, then starting with Purple Rain. It's like knowing nothing about Renaissance art and walking into the Sistine Chapel, or starting out a classical music education with Beethoven's 5th. Purple Rain is probably the high point of his career, one of the most powerful, beautiful pieces of rock music ever. It's great to see you react to it.

One of the most beautiful, reaffirming faith in humanity moments i have experienced was.. shortly after he died there was an impromptu memorial outside the "first avenue night club" in Minneapolis. thousands if not tens of thousands of people from all over the world, showed up and grieved and celebrated this man together it turned into a giant sing along. Probably the last time Minneapolis was a great (or safe) place to go.

I really like to watch people being mindblowed by his talent, as it occurred to me almost by chance. Growing up during the eighties, I knew and liked his most aired hits. But I remind the media portraying him generally as " that other guy from the charts, who has a bunch of higly danceable songs and a cute face", or " the talented but eccentric popstar with provocative lyrics and stage antics" making it seem like he was half crazy. The general idea was that he was not to be taken too seriously. Almost never did they mention his real musical abilities. When I really started to listen to him (much too late) it was, I dare to say, life changing. I discovered an artist who had all, absolutely everything that I love: talented, personnality, expressivity, passion for music, incredible contact with the public, butt-kicking piano, guitar and bass skills, humour, depth, and was incredibly sharp minded... Not to forget, he was an unusually but really fine man, who, on top of this, went more and more charming as he grew older ( well, he aged like fine cognac, and was still as gorgeous in his 50 as he was in his 20 ) So, despite the fact it's the most well known, I hope this appetizer of a song gave you the will to taste more. It would be a pity to stick to the most well known hits, he has much more to offer. To me the real gems are actually NOT the hits. Especilly his piano skills which are wonderful, but hidden in the mix, and shine on more confidential songs. If you continue to listen, you're in for a lifetime of discoveries and amazement.

In an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Stevie Nicks recalled Prince sending her a 10-minute instrumental version of Purple Rain, asking her to write lyrics for it. After hearing his demo, she described it as "overwhelming". “I listened to it and I just got scared," she said. "I called him back and said, ‘I can’t do it. I wish I could. It’s too much for me.’ I’m so glad that I didn’t, because he wrote it, and it became Purple Rain."

He was not being passive aggressive. The record label stole his name and trademarked it. He didn't have legal rights to use his name. That is why he used the symbol and was "the artist formerly known as". He had to go to court to have the legal right to his name. The corporation was scum.

For me, when the Purple Rain album came out the song "Let's Go Crazy" made it to radio and I really liked it. I was in school and taking a computer course with what was then brand new IBM PC computers (not the later ones - the original IBM PCs). From the time you flipped the Big Red Switch to power it up until the machine was booted and ready, was the same amount of time to say the spoken part at the beginning of "Let's Go Crazy". In class, a few friends and I coordinated that to see how many of us could do it together. The most who participated was the girl and boy to the right of me and the three boys to the left. Memories.

Prince is a legend in Minnesota, even though he seems like he is from somewhere very different. The story goes that his friends recognized his talent and pitched in to help him record a tape to send to record labels. At his first audition with Warner Bros. Records he sang a song and played the keyboard part, then started over and played the guitar part. When the record exec said he had heard enough (having realized how talented he was), Prince said "but you haven't heard the drum part yet...."
