For all my life, I've been a Ray Stevens fan because I love comedy. I knew about the "serious" music like "Misty" but didn't think overmuch of it. I also knew of "Everything is Beautiful" because I remember learning as a child, though whether through school or church, I have no idea and I didn't know it was written by Ray Stevens. I finally saw the the video around 2010 and it really made an impression. In fact, I was a pastor in Aransas Pass when hurricane Harvey destroyed the community. After the initial efforts at rescue and emergency repair, we worked for well over a year to rebuild the community. The churches were a major part of the effort but all of the churches worked together. I got idea of trying to record a cover of "Everything is Beautiful" showing us all working together. I hoped that we might use it to raise some money for the relief efforts. I had most of the other pastors on board too. Then I was reassigned to far west Texas. Many in my congregation had lost their homes in the storm and opted to move far away from the see. The church could no longer afford a full time pastor and I could not afford to support my family without full time employment. I will always regret that it was not done. I found that even the hurricane brought out "beauty" in many people who helped. Everything truly can be beautiful. Many people think of Ray Steven as just a comedian. He is one of the best. He is also, however, a consummate musician and an extraordinary wordsmith. I love music. I have always preferred instrumental pieces, and, of course, comedy. It is only in the last decade that I have begun to properly appreciate songs for their own beauty. Mr. Stevens has been a significant part of that journey. I still love baroque organ fugues, Big Band, Celtic reels, Klezmer and all of the same "weird" stuff I always have but I have finally begun to appreciate the music of my youth from bands I remembered only as names. Truly, everything is beautiful.

This reminds me of a country comedian routine (I thought it was Jerry Clower but it's somebody else) about being invited to sing at a small country church... that turned out to be a snake handling church. The exchange - paraphrased: "Where's the back door?" "They ain't got one" "Reckon where do they want one!?"

Man, I grew up listening to Ray Stevens' music and always loved it! We had some on cassette tapes and even a few 8-tracks. To this day, my favorite of his is still "Shriner's Convention". But there's a LOT of his music that's just great. To name a few: "The Streak", "It's Me Again Margaret", "Gitarzan", "I'm My Own Grandpa", and for his like, ONE song that's not funny but is really good too, "Everything is Beautiful".

Reviving an old video... Funny story my first marriage was to a Kentucky woman. When her aunt died we went back to her home for the funeral... and we did sit up with the dead. We had a big dinner then the family met at the funeral home and we stayed awake all night in the same room as the casket. It was completely uneventful but still a little creepy! Thanks Ty I appreciate your content, I love the variety of content! May God Bless

Love all of Ray Stevens, still have 45 record of the streak, it sold over 5 million copys, it was 90s when video came out. Ray Stevens started out as Gospal singer. He as a beautiful voice when singing gospal

Interesting history about viewing dead relatives at home. This was near the turn of the 20th century when professional mortuary services became the norm. Well, the room where they would show the body was in the parlor... then it became a funeral parlor. Afterwards the parlor was renamed to the "living room" and that is why we have living rooms at home because they are for the living.
