Ray Stevens is a country & pop singer-songwriter & comedian known for his novelty hits such as "Gitarzan", "Ahab The Arab", "Along Came Jones", "The Streak" and others. But he also did a few serious songs such as "Misty" & "Everything Is Beautiful" which he won a Grammy for in 1970. Please check out Home Free's version of this song "Mississippi Squirrel Revival". They do a great animated version that is very funny. Ray Stevens commented that he really liked it.
@js35994 күн бұрын
Ray won Grammy awards for both "Everything is Beautiful" AND "Misty"... He also has more then a few serious songs in his nearly 70 year career.... A few other serious songs include "Turn Your Radio On" and "Mr Businessman" and "Butterfly Inside a Coupe Deville" and "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex" and "Thank You" and "My Dad" and even the ironically titled "Funny Man"... Dozens, if not hundreds more serious songs by him too... He even did a respectable version of Roy Orbison's "Crying"...
@elvwood4 күн бұрын
@@js3599 I would particularly recommend "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex" because it's both funny _and_ serious at the same time (the message is serious, the imagery is humourous).

Ray Stevens was a studio musician and producer in Nashville in the late 60's but he hit it huge with a song he wrote and sang called "Everything is Beautiful" which topped several charts and won him a Grammy. He had a variety TV show in the summer of 1970 which, if I recall correctly was a summer replacement for the Andy Williams show. He then made a career out of comedy songs for a while. This was something of a comeback song during the MTV music video era.

I work at a local church, and we had a squirrel come into the sanctuary during a funeral. True story! It took a bit to piece out the story because the pastor and organist came out of the door literally leaning on each to stand upright because they were laughing so hard. It turns out, the squirrel pretty much ran around under the pews with people hiking up their legs as the squirrel ran by their feet. When the squirrel got to the front pew, he just kept on going and stood up behind the guest minister with his little paws together while the benediction prayer was being said by that minister. Then he took off down the other side of the church where people were hopping up and down as the little fellow ran by their feet. The widow thought it was hilarious and said that her deceased husband would have absolutely loved it. Now, we won’t talk about the squirrel who ran in through my open office door and I told them I wasn’t coming back until that squirrel was gone…

Ray Stevens had several comedic musical songs, "The Streak" being the most popular and went to #1. Streaking (running nude in public) was a fad, especially if you could do it on TV like the Oscars or a sports game). Novelty songs were a thing in the 60s and 70s (and the parodies of the 80s) and some were very popular. Some that I remember are "When You're Hot, You're Hot", "Coconut", "Spiders and Snakes", "Convoy", "Short People", "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer", and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)". For a kid like me in the 70s, these were awesome songs and fun to sing.
