Aubrey is a song about a love that never began… Aubrey was someone we were smitten with but we never got the courage to approach her and made the first move… And we missed that forever. “If I can’t have the one I want, I’ll do without the best…” I guess we all have our Aubreys in life… I have to say I have mine too…😢

Hey you are spot on, I had one just like that. I was in my early teens and had to go to my dads company picnic. I thought what a bore but had to go. In the middle of the festivities I met this beautiful girl and we just hit it off. We did all the games together and just had a great time. But the night flew by and before I knew it, it was time to go. I never even asked her name but her smile and how she looked at me I still remember now forty years later. I think I'll call her Aubrey.

I haven't come across one reactor who hasn't been blown away by Bread. This was back in the day when people really knew how to write songs. David Gates was brillant. He just tells a story about love and moves us. Was one of my favorite groups in the '70s.

Totally agree. And I will add that this song alone was enough to motivate me to buy my first acoustic guitar at 17. I was able to figure out intricate artists like Neil Young, and a multitude of others. Finally at 59 (with the help of youtube 😉) I can play this masterpeice. And it was worth the wait all these years. It is brilliant in it's simplicity. Yet complex in all of the unique chord voicings . Absolutely love it Soft rock star - phewey. Gates was/is a top tier artist/composer of the late 20th century! Cheers!

I agree and maybe it's what makes this song even more special. Never heard it much on the radio when it was recorded. But i have always had the very first verse etched into memory for some reason. It is really a special song and I think part if this also has to do with the unique chord changes that do not occur or repeat in any other balad i have ever heard. Gates was so underrated and unique. He deserves a 2nd hurrah from all his fans. And it seems he does have many.

Thank you Harri for playing this song. I love Bread because my grandfather loved this band, and my grandfather would play this song on the Anniversary of my grandmothers passing. (Aubrey was my grandmothers name) I asked him one time why he played this particular song on their anniversary, and he said because it reminded him of the love that he and my grandmother shared. And he said no one could ever hold a candle to her, I suppose there are people that may find their "one true love" and may not be able to love anyone else. Such a sad but beautiful memory, but one I treasure none the less. Lovely reaction thanks for sharing these beautiful old tunes they are truly old friends to many of us.💖🎶🤗

I am pretty certain I have found that one true love. We’ve been together for over 30, years now and I can’t imagine life without her. We were separated this Christmas after I donated a kidney to our daughter and she had to stay with our daughter in the hospital when I had been allowed to go home and we missed each other so much we both started crying the moment we saw each other on FaceTime on Christmas Day.

Great reaction to a great song. Regarding your confusion with the verse "If I can't have the one I want, I'll do without the best." Basically it's a tragic outcome of a broken heart. Saying you will never love again because it hurts too much when it doesn't work out. And he's left thinking about the one that got away, the one he never really had. The heart wants what the heart wants. It's not logical as you point out, but it is often true.

Sorry to put in my two cents. This song is, indeed, called "Aubrey." However, the young, beautiful actress who played in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "My Fair Lady" was named "Audrey" with a "d," not a "b." But you are correct that Gates got his inspiration from seeing her, according to Wikipedia. It's just a spelling difference that he used in the title.

Even if someone comes along and good enough for him, he will still leave that one alone and pine for somebody else, because Aubrey he is indirectly referring to Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany. In a natal chart, Venus signifies something that you pine for. It might me a fantasy that never materialises, but in your mind it is still the best. Venus signifies the chasing of your highest dreAms, but which is still basically elusive.

Hi Harri ... Yeah, the singer (David Gates) is just saying the way he FEELS right NOW, so when he says if he can't have the girl he wants, he'll live without the best, he's NOT saying that nothing will change his mind ... he's just saying that's not how he feels about it at that moment. I've felt like this for about 10-15 girls. You forget about it somewhat when someone else comes along ... or so I assume, because I still can't stop thinking about a small handful of girls that left an indelible mark on my soul (after we split up for whatever reason) ☹. However, my lingering but fond memories of them and the joy they brought me far outweigh the pain I felt when we separated, and ever since 😊. I am an advocate of the phrase, "it's better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all" !!!

Bread was formed like many great bands with 4 studio musicians. David Gates and James Griffin are both superbly talented singer/composers, but James is more upbeat most of the time. sadly they eventually fell apart due to 'artistic differences'. I guess the fact that most of their hits were written by David contributed to that.

And Aubrey was her name A not so very ordinary girl or name But who's to blame? For a love that wouldn't bloom For the hearts that never played in tune Like a lovely melody that everyone can sing Take away the words that rhyme, it doesn't mean a thing And Aubrey was her name We tripped the light and danced together to the moon But where was June? No, it never came around If it did, it never made a sound Maybe I was absent or was listening to fast Catching all the words, but then the meaning going past But God, I miss the girl And I'd go a 1000 times around the world Just to be closer to her than to me And Aubrey was her name I never knew her, but I loved her just the same I loved her name Wish that I had found the way And the reasons that would make her stay I have learned to lead a life apart from all the rest If I can't have the one I want, I'll do without the best But how I miss the girl And I'd go a million times around the world just to say She had been mine for a day

I think he's saying she's the best & with giving up on 2nd, he's resigning to the fact he'd rather not settle. I've been there, recovered early in life, but past 50 :& now at 65, after watching a soul mate of 33+ years turn into the issue most of her side of the family either had, or sought therapy. I knew early she'd be too head strong to seek help. I let her chose when the inevitable end came, washing my hands of it. I started early as a Freshman dating a Sr & it only got better from there. Aside from getting my entire life upended 3 months shy of 17, given only 32 day's notice to be on a plane headed to a base outside Madrid Spain. I had a career set, which would've come with the equivalent retirement of Civil service & been fully vested at 47, which wouldn't have interfered with my music aspirations, but I didn't have time to react. Was in a perfect relationship, but not knowing when or where I'd return & being her first. I didn't think it'd be fair to ask her to wait, which wasn't taken the way I intended, but not surprising since men & women often think much differently~! Spain was the best thing for me, few schools would've had the English courses I needed to graduate & her most relate to music. Music theory, Strings, Chorus, Drama, Speech, Composition, Humanities, Electronics, 2 correspondence courses in electronics repair, which slowed me to spend the 2nd quarter as parts scrounger for the base electronics repair shop, when customers forfeited their items, rather than Pat the bench charge. It's served me well since knowing how to test parts. With a 100% import tax on electronics & parts, I was valuable to them. Getting the male lead in West Side story got me a job as lead singe & shared lead & rhythm guitar with the only Spanish guy in the band. All 10 years my Sr, but within a month I was learning as the new Top 40 & writing 3 & 4 part harmonies. I wish tha been Stateside, but it's where I met my wife of 35 years & getting the best 30 years with her, I felt I got the better of the deal. Not what I wanted, but when a substance is in control, not a big surprise, I'm far from the only one. I could've done without the embezzlement, but working with nothing but County female attorneys, I should've watched closer. But after fighting what Dr's said before & after was a losing battle with 240 square mm's of Stage 3 Melanoma, she'd been by my side through it's entirety & my ultimate unexpected becoming disabled, I am still luckier than most. The hardest experience of all was losing one of my 2 son's suddenly at 36. I'd have given decades of my own life in exchange, if given the chance, but we're not afforded such things. I'm still blessed as a father & wouldn't change either son, regardless. Life's often not about real choices, just deciding whether or not you'd settle & much like the song & after trying the dating seen in my early 50's. Makes alcoholism seen tame~ Lol! Love your channel, soon as I finish rehabbing my home, which with multiple disabilities ain't breaking any speed records, but if I do the job it's done to suit me & the right way.

Aubrey has one of the most beautiful melodies of any song I have ever heard. But over time I have come to be more critical of the lyrics. It's more a fantasy imagining a love of someone who never existed. I think the song could have been more effective if it represented real life more than a fantasy. It's really not clear when you listen to the song.
