Harri, the story goes like this . . . he found the girl's diary, and just assumed she was talking about him. He was pleasantly surprised and began dreaming of their future. When he mentioned it to her, she acted indifferent, which he attributed to embarrassment, or maidenly modesty. On a consecutive day, he again found the diary (probably this time deliberately left by the girl, trying to gently let him know his mistake) -- this time, names were used, the scales fell from his eyes, and he painfully realized his error, that he was not her beloved after all.

Wow, I've always known the explanation for this song, but again, wow, you have beautifully explained it..... Only thing I'd add was that his love for her is/was true and genuine; even after the realization and pain that she was not going to be with him, he still hoped and wished nothing but the best for her - "all thee sweet things 'they' can find.")

He assumed the lines were about him but as he read on he realized that she was in love with someone else. Another great song of Bread is called everything I own. He wrote it with 2 meanings. One to make it sound like a love song but the real meaning is about his dad and being able to be with him one more time after he died.

The recent phenomenon of actually watching someone you don’t know, reacting to video of a singer/musician/song you’re fond of, is an odd way to spend time-as if the viewer has an unfulfilled need for another to like what he likes. And the reactors very often lack the necessary knowledge, often misinterpreting the meanings of songs. Harri seems like a sincere lover of music though, gracious and appreciative of different genres as he continues his journey into new musical lands.

I'm from Oklahoma and David Gates is from Tulsa, OK. I was in High School when they were popular. Back in my youth when I was idealistic and believed in romance! haha. Makes me nostalgic. So, on one hand you aren't supposed to read someone's diary. But, on the other hand, you should never leave your diary where someone can read it. Because people will read the diary - every single time. And, now as you know, he read things he didn't want to know.

He found a diary, not sure it was his girlfriend either since he said "her" but anyway, yes he thought it was him she loved but it was someone else. He was making assumptions that were wrong as most of those are. What he was dreaming of was her being his wife until he read otherwise. But he still wishes them both love in their life together.
@derricwilliams76752 жыл бұрын
My interpretation of this song is that the girl and him are friends but he loves her and hints they will marry and he thinks he confirms it in the diary, but is confused because she doesn’t show those feelings to him just writes it. Then I think it’s not another time that he finds the diary but the same finding of it and he suddenly realizes it’s about another man not him and he wishes all the best for them because he will always love her. It’s probably the saddest song I’ve ever heard and simply beautiful.
