This song from 1981 is a cover of a Sammy Hagar song from a year or two earlier. Rick Springfield got his big break while appearing on the Soap Opera "General Hospital" I heard the story right from Sammy Hagar on his radio show. I've had the pleasure to have met both artists, and I can honestly say that they are both wonderful people.

Yep ... Sammy wrote it in late 1977, and recorded it in early Spring 1978 - 3 years before Rick's version. They are great friends and have partnered up on Sammy's Rum Company!! Sammy jokes with Rick about this song ... Sammy says he could never do much with this song and Rick touched it and made a HUGE hit with it ... as he laughs and says how happy he was for Rick!! Been so long since I've heard this, I had to look up when this came out - turns out this was his follow-up single to Jessie's Girl, off the same album, "Working Class Dog". Dude had the swagger, that's for sure. "Celebrate Youth" is my favorite of his, but I also love "Don't Talk to Strangers" as well as "Bop 'Til You Drop". And also - check out Coheed & Cambria's "Jessie's Girl 2", a sequel to the original that came out last year... and it features a cameo by Rick himself, and at 71 years old looks better than most men half his age. To answer your question, yes, this is an 80s song, but he began his career as a recording artist in 1971 (his first single was called "Speak to the Sky"), but it wasn't until "Jessie's Girl" that his music career really took off. His sound was kind of a holdover from the 70s, more guitar-heavy and without synths like many others of that era (like Bryan Adams and John Mellencamp).

I love Rick Springfield! This is one of my favorites. I got to see him a few years ago and he put on a great show. He reminds me of Peter Frampton because he had his 'years' being high on the ladder of fame, but never seemed to get the respect (for a large part) for his talent and hard work that other less talented people got but that never deterred him from keeping on and enjoying life. I really enjoy watching people interview him too.

I also recommend going backwards and checking out his 70s material. His 1972 album, "Beginnings", and his 1973 album, "Comic Book Heroes" have a lot of gems on them. I even like 1974's "Misson Magic" but mainly for the nostalgia as I remember watching him as a cartoon on this Saturday morning show when I was a kid. His 1976 album, "Wait for Night" is okay too but it was kind of a transition from what he was in the 70s to what he ended up being in the 80s. From the early albums I really like "What Would the Children Think", "1000 Years", "The Unhappy Ending", "Comic Book Heroes/I'm Your Superman", "Misty Mountain Woman", and "Born Out of Time".
