This song from 1981 is a cover of a Sammy Hagar song from a year or two earlier. Rick Springfield got his big break while appearing on the Soap Opera "General Hospital" I heard the story right from Sammy Hagar on his radio show. I've had the pleasure to have met both artists, and I can honestly say that they are both wonderful people.

Yep ... Sammy wrote it in late 1977, and recorded it in early Spring 1978 - 3 years before Rick's version. They are great friends and have partnered up on Sammy's Rum Company!! Sammy jokes with Rick about this song ... Sammy says he could never do much with this song and Rick touched it and made a HUGE hit with it ... as he laughs and says how happy he was for Rick!! Been so long since I've heard this, I had to look up when this came out - turns out this was his follow-up single to Jessie's Girl, off the same album, "Working Class Dog". Dude had the swagger, that's for sure. "Celebrate Youth" is my favorite of his, but I also love "Don't Talk to Strangers" as well as "Bop 'Til You Drop". And also - check out Coheed & Cambria's "Jessie's Girl 2", a sequel to the original that came out last year... and it features a cameo by Rick himself, and at 71 years old looks better than most men half his age. To answer your question, yes, this is an 80s song, but he began his career as a recording artist in 1971 (his first single was called "Speak to the Sky"), but it wasn't until "Jessie's Girl" that his music career really took off. His sound was kind of a holdover from the 70s, more guitar-heavy and without synths like many others of that era (like Bryan Adams and John Mellencamp).

The 80's was a decade where there were so many electic genre's of music. Not just synthe but, rock, R & B, blues, punk, new wave, metal. There was a type of music 🎶 for everyone and anyone, especially early 80's. Such fun time.

My wife and a friend of hers got to meet him after a show 5 years ago. He ended up taking them with his manager to a Hibachi place. She said he was a down to Earth normal guy, and not afraid to engage in regular conversation. Recommend “What Kind of Fool Am I” and “Celebrate Youth”. Celebrate is very synth oriented, but has some very good lyrics.

I love Rick Springfield! This is one of my favorites. I got to see him a few years ago and he put on a great show. He reminds me of Peter Frampton because he had his 'years' being high on the ladder of fame, but never seemed to get the respect (for a large part) for his talent and hard work that other less talented people got but that never deterred him from keeping on and enjoying life. I really enjoy watching people interview him too.

If you can find it, among his very early releases (‘70’s) is “Life is a Celebration”-Amber, I think you’d love that one. It was covered in the 80’s TV series “Fame”. We saw him a few years ago with Pat Benatar-he still rocks (and looks fine…just sayin’ 😄)

I also recommend going backwards and checking out his 70s material. His 1972 album, "Beginnings", and his 1973 album, "Comic Book Heroes" have a lot of gems on them. I even like 1974's "Misson Magic" but mainly for the nostalgia as I remember watching him as a cartoon on this Saturday morning show when I was a kid. His 1976 album, "Wait for Night" is okay too but it was kind of a transition from what he was in the 70s to what he ended up being in the 80s. From the early albums I really like "What Would the Children Think", "1000 Years", "The Unhappy Ending", "Comic Book Heroes/I'm Your Superman", "Misty Mountain Woman", and "Born Out of Time".

Rick Springfield has been performing since the 60s. He had some modest success in the 70s. He was part of a group, "Zoot" than became a solo artist. He ended up turning to acting and ironically..his acting garnered him a brand new audience in the 80s by way of the character that he played on the long running ABC network soap opera, "General Hospital " . He played the stunningly handsome new Dr. On staff Dr. Noah Drake. Simultaneously...just as his stint was beginning on the soap opera, Rick's album "Working class Dog" dropped and burned up the charts for weeks with his hit single "Jessie's Girl".

Inside Silvia is a hidden gem, American Girl, Affair of the Heart….all great! I love listening to the 2 of you as you are discovering the music I grew up listening to. My mom and dad only listened to country or bluegrass, so Rick Springfield was my secret obsession! That being said, I would love to see you react to some good bluegrass…..a band from my hometown is Balsam Range, and Trains I’ve missed by them (or anything by them) is so worth a listen!♥️

Rick Springfield had a huge career in the eighties and he was a soap opera heart throb! He played Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital! My favorite Rick Springfield song was Don’t Talk To Strangers. He also had a song called, Bruce, about how people would get him confused with Bruce Springsteen! ❤️❤️

Springfield is an Australian who started out in the early 70's. He did a few albums and then tried to get into acting also. Hid breakthrough came in 1981 with Jesse's Girl followed by this song and he also starred in the soap opera General Hospital. He was a major heartthrob back then for the ladies.

Saw Rick on my plane heading back from LA to Milwaukee back in 08. He was playing at a casino. I was just walking to my seat and he was upfront looking right at me while I walked by. Told him I love his music! Nice guy and his wife is from my home state Wisconsin. Had Working class dog album. My mom bought a lot of records from garage sales. Man alive I wish I kept them. He plays at Summerfest every year in Milwaukee. You guys should check out Summerfest since you 2 have a passion for music. 2 weeks with 13 stages on Lake Michigan in Old Milwaukee

Rick had a career in the 70's as well--even had a cartoon! Once he was on General Hospital and became so popular, it rejuvenated his musical career. And yeah, i think he's a cool guy. He plays himself in the show "Californication" and it was so much fun.

Rick Springfield was on the soap opera General Hospital when I was in college. He played Dr. Noah Drake. Our lounge was full at 3 pm everyday to watch him. This was right before he started having hit songs. Anyone else remember?

Rick had many great songs. Each album featured a song dedicated to his late father. My Father’s Chair is very sentimental. He was a heartthrob in the 80s. Celebrate Youth is great. Anything from the Living in Oz album. The soundtrack from his Hard to Hold movie is great.
