85 and Barb is a WONDERFUL woman. Sweet as all get out. Their great friends Doug (Davidson) and Cindy (Douggie's wife) are really great people too. Cindy came out to give me a hug and comfort me having a very bad hour-long panic attack while waiting on a hip-high, glass-sided bridge 5 floors high. That sounds like a nice view for normal people. But for ones like me with a phobia of heights, it was a NIGHTMARE that caused a very ugly hour long crying panic attack. Cindy spotted me (DD and I 1st in line) and came out the door to comfort me.A VERY sweet woman, just LOVE her. Funnily enough the following 3 cruises DD and I were remembered by the Regular super fans that went on all of those with us. Nobody had a problem with us standing back off the bridge. Well after I literally ran down a 6 ft 10 in security guy that had waved us on the second year not realizing that I was the crazy cryer from the previous year. As soon as my old large-bodied Deaf height phobia self gets on that thing it is a Close eys, hold the sides and rush to the door. ) My DD was trying to tell him, "You CAN"T stop her, you can't stop her" as I was rushing him. I get to just inside the door. I had NO interest in causing problems, I was not wanting to rush the talent before time. I just needed OFF that high bridge. Just inside the door, backed up to it so they could get the story from my hearing DD, they understood then what happened and I was not a threat. They also knew that there is a reason (serious reason) that the bridge is kept clear of people DD and I get in line 1st for our group waiting for picks with Rick and others. We wait, explaining to the ones gathering behind us and they (fellow fans) knew us by then, they had seen us the previous years and I brighly dye my hair multiple bright colors (blue, green, yellow, red, and black) which makes the 2 of us VERY recognizable. Rick Springfield has some of the most understanding and wonderful fans on those 4 cruises. I thank every one of those understand =ing people who made the cruises such fun for my daughter and I.

@Steve Klemetti I agree. For the time, it raised no eyebrows. It's today's "woke" culture that makes everything out to be much more sinister than it was ever meant to be. Why did no one think it was creepy back then ??? Because we had brains back then ... brains that were not indoctrinated to BS thoughts. Just look at how the "woke" (we'll leave it at that) culture is supposed to be so inclusive, yet is trying to cancel everything anyone else does (that doesn't fall in-step with their weird thinking), all the while, doing the very things they are trying to cancel, right out in public.

This is EXACTLY how some young men see relationships. That's why the lyrics never bothered me (even when it first came out.) Also, Mr. Springfield said that even with soap opera fame, he really felt like he had "made it " when he was driving one night, stopped at a red light, and the car beside and ahead of him had cranked this song.

This was a #1 song. Everybody loved it. Nobody thought it was weird in the 80s. I'm pretty sure lots and lots of guys have "thought" about wanting their friend's girlfriend or being envious of his friend and wondering why he isn't as lucky, even if they don't admit it. I've wondered why a friend of mine, who might be an ass, gets a good one. You can't really believe that this is uncommon.

As an old grandma I can tell you this was not known as creepy! He is saying "I WISH I had Jessie's girl." He's asking "where can I find a woman like that". You didn't take the meaning the way my generation did then. We looked at it as a compliment to the girl. She was desirable.

Yes and no. Even then, that was a possible friendship killer, and there was a bit of creepy obsession to it. But back then, people were more innocent in perception of song meanings. The guy that wanted Jessie’s Girl could easily also be the stalker in The Police song “Every Breath You Take” if he took his crush too far.

Nope, no creeper vibes. He wished that he had his friends girlfriend but he's not stalking her or anything. The part you really reacted to was him looking at himself in the mirror wondering why she didn't want him instead of his friend. His smashing the mirror is him reacting to the fact that he's not good enough for her. It makes sense when you realize that Rick Springfield himself has fought a lifelong battle with sometimes debilitating depression. He's been married since the early 80's to his wife Barbara. I met him once (in 2001) after a concert and he was very kind.
