BJ is right about the blues. Rory is from Cork in Ireland. My dad was a musician in the big bands. Rory used to bug my dad to use my dads guitar. My dad recalled when Rory was a young lad running up to him with his mouth organ and telling my dad that he learned some great music from the sailers at the dock (cork was then a big harbour town). My dad chased him away but recalls that was the first time he heard core blues music. From Rory’s harmonica. Rory was about 11 years old.

Rory was the most underrated influential guitarist of all time. He influenced the likes of Brian May of Queen (who credits Rory for his guitar sound), Eric Clapton (who credits Rory for getting him back into the blues), Alex Lifeson of Rush, Glenn Tipton of Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, and Slash of Guns N Roses. If you get a chance, check out the video of Rory performing Bullfrog Blues on The Old Grey Whistle Test from 1976. Rory is Irish and he and Van Morrison were the first 2 Irish rock n roll heros. A couple more great Rory songs to check out are Big Guns, Shin Kicker, Shadow Play, and Messin' With The Kid. 👍✌️

@bert0522 I saw him open for Rod Stewart & The Faces in 1973. I was there mainly for Rod but enjoyed the heck out of Rory. I'd seen so many great guitarists already...Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore...and in my opinion Rory was pretty much up there in the stratosphere with them.💙

Jimi Hendrix briefly met and spoke with Rory Gallagher, the Irish Rock/Blues artist from the UK. JImi said of Rory in 1969, Rory is the greatest guitarist in the world, that nobody outside of Ireland and the United Kingdom have never heard of. the thing that made rory unique is the sounds that came from his guitar were his own, only used an amp and treble boast' he grew up listen to blues on american radio whilst a child in ireland. he was born in donegal in the north west of ireland because his father was an engineer in the irish army, but he lived most of his life in cork in the south of the country. was never interested in fame or ever released a single. he died much to young because of medication he took because of his fear of flying which damaged his liver he died from an infection after having a liver transplant. imagine that he used to busk outside a club in belfast with gary moore when they were young and undiscovered

Irish guitarist extraordinaire, Rory Gallagher was the guitar player during the seventies that Eric Clapton should have been. The story is that in 1974, the IRA stopped bombing things long enough for Rory to do his Irish tour, especially in Dublin, and Cork, Rory's hometown.

He was from Northern Ireland and lived in Cork for most of his career. You should see his live performance of Bullfrog Blues, his band was cooking that night on the Old Whistle Stop Tour, a venue on TV maybe out of Germany. Rory never came to American and loved being the hero to his dirt poor countrymen in Ireland. He was much like Gary Moore, except Gary did travel to America. I have probably been listening to him from sometime in the 80's and still listen to his catalog, a few great concerts at the Montreux Jazz Festival over the years. You could get to Europe by boat, no airplanes for this Irish guitar hero. I first heard him when I was in college and I went on to own 3 record stores, so I was hyper aware of music during that golden age of Rock.

your man's right, his inspiration is blues, he grew up listening to american blues, he crosses over to rock and combines the two, there are loads of great guitarists but rory was unique, the notes from his guitar were his own, no technology other then a treble boast, humble man who the world lost too soon and an icon of many other great guitarists

Rory is one of the most underrated guitar players. He is definitely high up on my list near Hendrix and SRV. He has so many great songs. You need to watch some of his live videos to get his energy. Shadow Play, Do you Read Me, and Bullfrog Blues are some good ones.

Rorys studio stuff is fantastic, but his live performances were even better, he never played any song the same way twice, always adding extra solos and exploring different directions to take his songs in, he was an open channel through which incredibly creative music just flowed from. He never ran out of ideas and he was very innovative.
