Moro was at that time the best argentinian drummer, Pedro Aznar the best bass player without a doubt, David Lebon an excellent guitarist and Charly the genius, conductor on pianos, synt, keyboards. While many of the songs were written and sung by Charly, they all had their talents composing and singing. When you listen to the album Bicicleta by Seru Giran you will go crazy. I think Seru Giran is the best rock band in our history: they wrote great and beutiful songs, they are great music players, they were great playing live. And their song is unique. Yes, there is some prog rock, some queen/beatles/folk influences here and there, but you will not find another band who sounds like seru giran. This album is an absolute masterpiece, one of the greatest albums of all time. It was their second album and the one that earned them te favor of the public, since their first album was somewhat outlandish and many people didn't feel a connection with it. Serú Girán was sort of a supergroup, it was born in Brazil because Charly was dating a brazilian girl and he proposed David Lebón (who was his friend from a long time ago but also a very well known musician who had played with Spinetta in Pescado Rabioso and with Pappo and Polifemo) to go to Buzios, a small beach town in Brazil and rent a house and form a band, and so they did. david was a superb guitar playar with a bluesy backgrond, singer and composer of his own, and Charly (who came from a classical background) admired him very much. They later recruited Oscar Moro for the drums, he had already played with Charly in La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros but also in Los Gatos, one of the first argentinian rock bands; and Pedro Aznar that at that time was a 17 year old bass prodigy who played fretless bass in some argentinian jazz bands and who was a multiinstrumentist -he also played a lot of keyboards in Serú- with a jazz background and a great singer and knew a lot of music theory (they had a friendly rivalry with Charly -who had graduated as a piano professor by the age of 12- about who was more proficient). They were nicknamed the "Argentinian Beatles" because the three of them (Charly and David mainly, but Pedro too as a sort of "third leg") sang and composed and had their own thing going on. The band produced three more albums after this one, "Bicicleta" (another masterpiece), "Peperina" and "No llores por mí, Argentina" (nothing to do with the well known Evita's song), a live recording of their last live show. Pedro had announced he was leaving the band in order to move to Boston and study in Berklee, and after considering replacing him with two guys, Charly and David decided to end the band. They did several "informal" reunions and an official one in 1992, with a new studio album called "Serú 92" and two full packed live presentations in River Plate stadium (the biggest stadium of Argentina), but by then things weren't the same. Charly was already heavily involved in his cocaine and booze abuse and he was a megastar (his solo carreer after Serú Girán split up was very succesful) so he was somewhat difficult to deal with for the other guys in the band and they ended up kinda fighting each other, and all this got in the way of the music. Specially David was very angry with Charly and took him several years to let go of the animosity. If you listen to Serú 92 the difference is clear. It has some good songs in it, in a different style that their previous records, but they're like a collection of solo songs from different dudes who don't want anything to do with the others, it's often compared to the Beatles' White album for that reason.

The voice on San Fracisco y El Lobo is David Lebón. In fact, if we count all the songs that the group recorded, Charly sings 20 songs, and David another 20. David is a very distinctive voice, and Serú wouldn't be the same without his vocal presence. San Fracisco y El Lobo talk about a wolf that has lived in captivity. And it is the wolf himself who tells the story - maybe to Francis of Assisi, the patron of animals. A beautiful poetry. Buenas noches. [El lobo comenzó a hablar]. Estoy aqui por última vez, verás. En el bosque mis días solía pasar. Salvaje y cruel, seguro en mi soledad. Tu voz me hizo ver. Tu luz me alejó del mal. Los niños sonreían al mirarme, el amor me hacía llorar. Pero un día el hombre, mal me empezó a tratar. Abrieron heridas que no cerrarán jamás. Padre! Volveré a ser feroz, mi garra será mortal. Volveré a dar temor, el miedo será mi hogar. El bosque escuchara aullidos de tempestad. Volveré a ser feroz, un rayo en la oscuridad. .................................................................. Goodnight. [The wolf began to speak]. I'm here for the last time, you will see. In the forest, used to pass my days. Wild and cruel, safe in my solitude. Your voice made me see . Your light kept me from the evil. The children smiled when they looked at me , the love made me cry. But one day human began to treat me badly. They opened wounds that will no heal never again. Father! I will be ferocious again, my claw will be deadly. I'll be scary again, the fear will be my home. The forest will hear howls of tempest. I will be ferocious again, a lightning in the darkness.

The recordings of those years are very deficient. Last year the original tapes were recovered and reached the hands of Pedro Aznar and he did a work of remastering and restoration that improved the audio and the mix of the album. It is impressive how you can see many things that you cannot hear in this version. I recommend the remastered version. There is a video on youtube where Pedro Aznar shows the remastered album to David Lebón and Charly García, which is great. And the live album "I don't want to go so crazy" shows what kind of musicians they are, incredible. Greetings Frank.

This was great, Frank! This was Seru Giran's second album. Viernes 3 am is a beautifully haunting song. Notice that the ticking of the watch begins at the word "reloj" (clock) and it ends abruptly with the words "BANG, BANG, BANG" after Charly sings "you take the barrel to your temple, clenching your teeth tight, and you close your eyes and see the whole sea in spring". I can't wait for part 2! The song 'Paranoia y Soledad' is quite slow and drawn out and is by far the worst track on the album. It is the only song which was not written by Charly.

Me acuerdo la primera vez que escuche viernes 3am... Fue por la calle yendo a comprar. En un momento tuve que frenar. No podía caminar. Así que me quedé simplemente frenado... Escuchando. Evolucionando. Cuando terminó el track juro que era otra persona. Me sentía distinto. Pocos temas me hicieron sentir así... Que me acuerde bien, "God only knows" de los Beach boys. Ponele... No se. Contado con los dedos de la mano.

Perro Andaluz (Andalusian Dog) We casually talk About someone I know well I let myself go through I'm like a tunnel where the train passes You become my friend If you are with me But when you're with another You torn me to pieces! You love to pose To be accepted where they hate you the most Mental velocity Stratagems and knowing how to act Some more, some less everybody knows the game If this is how we treat each other This is going wrong, very wrong! I'm a fool to follow you Like an Andalusian dog But my love will end One of these days One of these nights I'm a fool to follow you Like an Andalusian dog But my love will end One of these days One of these nights

I'm Brazilian but I like some singers from Argentina: Gustavo Cerati and Soda Stereo, Charly Garcia and Serú Girán, Fito Paez, Kevin Johansen and Diego Torres. Kevin and Diego have beautiful voices.

Please do "Pequeñas Anécdotas sobre las Instituciones" by Sui Generis, that's the start of Charly's progressive rock. It came in 1974, it was so modern that the public hated it.

Did you notice that the "tic toc" sound of the clock in Viernes 3 am ends exactly when he says "Bang Bang Bang!"? I was expecting this reaction since I found your channel, and started requesting songs of Seru Giran. I'd love to see the second part, and more of the greatest band of argentinian history (for me, at least :P).
