When this came out it was like a bomb going off! We had just come out of a major recession and though the government had changed, things remained the same. The song came out in 1977, but the Government didn't change until 1979. It was as you say like a bomb going off. Mainstream music was bland, small bands just couldn't get a look in with the whole industry ruled by massive corporations,. It (punk) was also cleverly manufactured too by the influences of Westwood, McLaren and a few others and initially concentrated around Kings Road. London before spreading. Punk absolutely changed so much and its influence style influences our culture today.

John Lydon is a fascinating guy. Smart, honest and capable of seeing through bullshit in an instant. He grew up a dirt poor Irish immigrant in the U.K. and his book Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs (the title refers to signs he used to see as a kid posted in store fronts to keep out supposed 'undesirables') is a wonderful, detailed breakdown of England at the time and how the punk scene came to be. One of my favorite tidbits is about how respected he became among the different lower class cultures throughout England while truly pissing off the wealthy establishment. Strongly recommend.

Rock music is supposed to scare your parents... by the mid-seventies disco music and easy listening pop were starting to dominate the charts... and then the Sex Pistols came along and became the (sneering) face of punk rock and parents got scared again. This music is more about attitude than talent and you sort of need the visuals of punk to emphasize the rebellious nature of what's going on here. I went to a Sex Pistols concert once, and it was BY FAR the most off the hook crazy concert I've ever been to. There were at least 5-6 people that jumped on stage to fight the band, and Johnny Rotten ended the concert early and told everyone in the crowd they were (well bad names) and then to beat up some guy in the crowd for making them leave early. lol, all punks in the crowd it was insane. The Pistols were the creation of Malcolm McLaren after spending time in New York closely associated with the New York Dolls. He wanted to shake up UK culture, through music and fashion, and succeeded. The Pistols were at the front of the UK punk scene which exploded in 76/77, their primary aim was to shock and have fun, but soon descended into chaos. Their second album was the aptly named Great Rock n Roll Swindle made after Johnny Rotten (Lydon) left the band to form the excellent Public Image Limited.

My husband was into Punk it is angry music, we didn't know each other then, he's Australian me English, so I was around for this 1975. There were lot of punks with there colourful hair, spiky, and mohican styles, cut t-shirt, and jeans with safety pin🧷 . Kind of cool as I dress up as one, and attracted an albino, which is cool. My husband is actually an albino strain, with his brother, both blonde and blue eyes, his bother is nearly blind, has very strong class. His brother was nicknamed snowman ⛄️. Went off listen to "God Save The Queen" by them it was banned when it came out.

There was a lot going on in the UK when this came out in 1977. Massive inflation, problems with the IRA and violence in Northern Ireland, etc. Another band you should cover is Stiff Little Fingers who were from Northern Ireland in the late 70s. They wrote a lot about The Troubles in Northern Ireland at the time. "Suspect Device" and "Alternative Ulster" are my two good songs to start with.

As an Englishman living in America I can say with the exception of a few like the Band members of Blondie, or Henry Rollins, or others that were in the midst of the 1970's UK punk scene, most Americans will never understand the true impact and meaning of this song or the Sex Pistols, as they never had any movement, or scene that was remotely comparable. As Henry Rollins once said, "Most Americans think the English are all sitting around drinking tea, talking posh, with their pinky fingers in the air." However, the reality is, especially at that time, if you showed up in their scene talking like that, you would have got beaten to a pulp. Violence, vandalism, alcoholism, theft, dodgy wheeling and dealing, racism, football hooliganism, street fighting, and mass bar fights, were certainly a weekly or daily occurrence in all working class neighborhoods. I can also attest to meeting the scariest, most evil people I ever met in those days too...As one of my American friends told me. He went to Barnsley in the early 1980's to visit long lost relatives, said it was the craziest, scariest experience of his life, was in complete culture shock! "The men were rough, hard as nails, very macho, and not afraid of a fight, the women right there with them. hard as fuck, and don't take any shit, They call it as it is, there's absolutely no bull. It's not for the faint of heart. I got my arse whooped several times while there." Quoting my friend Dave.

Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones and the drummer's name escapes me just now, getting Punk Rock started in England. The Sex Pistols were really trying to become a media sensation by stirring up a ruckus and almost emulating The Beatles success. It worked for a while, but went south soon after they hit the USA. Sid wound up ODing in New York and that was that for The Sex Pistols. A good companion song to "Anarchy In The U.K." is "God Save The Queen". Same attitude and even more focused.

Yep totally a protest song. Manager Malcolm Mclaren loved to stir the pot and Anarchy in the UK, and God save the Queen were two songs that were controversial as hell 😂. One of the most famous Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious hadn't yet joined the group when this was first released. He took over from bassist and original member Glen Matlock. In a twist of "genre", Malcolm McLaren would later turn to Hip-Hop and manage american DJs the Worlds Famous Supreme Team. McLaren would release an album called Duck Rock in which two hip-hop songs Buffalo Gals and Double Dutch would hit the Top 10. On point reaction Asia and BJ ❤️

There's actually a great somewhat forgotten movie called Sid and Nancy that documents the period of time when the band was formed, and recreates some of their most legendary moments, including their disastrous tour of the US. It's an incredible movie, that kind of launched Gary Oldman's career. Oldman plays Sid Vicious, in a much lauded performance, where his ability to disappear into a character was first noticed. SId was the sometime bass player (who really couldn't play the bass) in this band.

Punk music is protest music. It was the 70’s youth telling their elders who were screwing the country up, they’d had enough & they wanted change. During the 70’s Britain was a mess, still being run by men for men (Victorian) unions ruled the factory floors, we had strike after strike. I spent a lot of the 70’s with candle light & board games as the power companies were on strike because someone called someone else lazy or whatever. Even though there were a few punks bands in the 70`s only the Sex Pistols sang about the current situation that was the UK ( no jobs, hunger and the dole ) Alot of punks bands sang about being out of it and having a good time but the Sex Pistols got to the point and that ruffled alot of feathers. This Record was banned in the UK they couldn't even tour they found some loophole by doing a charity concert for the fireman in some town and they actually had their kids come out and see the concert and they really dug it

Now when you are i the punk territory, do The Clash "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais". About Joe Strummer being utterly disappointed in the pop-style music from the visiting Caribbean bands. He was hoping for some punk-ish music for the almost black only audience.
