Mick Hucknall wrote this song at the age of 17, Holding Back The Years is about the time he decided to leave his father's house and about the mother who abandoned him when he was 3 years old. Today Mick is 60 years old and continues to sing with Simply Red

☝️ Rob the music and his voice are so beautiful it makes it easy to miss the PROFOUNDLY DEEP message. He wasn’t holding on to wonderful memories of his youth. He was holding on trying to get PAST it. Just a personal opinion Most lyrics were so much better then we paid a lot more attention to them.

This song is very sad. It's about his mother abandoning him at age 3 & him hoping she'd return to have a relationship with him. He wasted years and tears wishing for her to return but she never did. Abandonment by a parent, especially a mother, will scar a person for life.

This one is always sentimental for me as it's filmed in my hometown of Whitby in North Yorkshire - was there last week visiting my parents. The part with the steam train was filmed a few miles away in Goathland, which was also the station used as Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter movies.

Been to Whitby many times and of course Goathland. The message here from Mick Hucknall could be repeated many times I'm sure by young men and girls brought up in troubled families. I was born right in the middle of world war 11 and as the eldest of six children experienced the troubles my mother went through trying to keep it all together having divorced my father when I was just three years old. The great thing is, it prepares you for whatever life throws at you. I left home at 17 and my final journey brought me to Australia, the best place in the world to start again.

This is Blue Eyed Soul. He still has a great voice. Mick Hucknall wrote the song when he was just 17 years old, during the time he was living with his father. Hucknall’s mother abandoned him and his father when he was only three years old. According to him, the problems the family encountered as a result of his mother’s abandonment inspired the lyrics of the song. I wish Amber was with you, would have loved to see her enjoying this as well.

@@looneygardener back in the day they called it blue eyed soul. From Wiki - "Blue-eyed soul (also called white soul) is rhythm and blues and soul music performed by white artists. The slang, coined in the mid-1960s, was invoked by music magazines in the 1960s such as Life who used it for the Righteous Brothers". Also Simply Red put out an album titled Blue Eyed Soul.

"Soul"/ blues is distinctively American, but influenced by Celtic/Gaelic music - it's a combination of the poor man's music of the new world, African beats and inspired by a combined misery of poverty, slavery, etc. It's not a big surprise that good artists in the genre come from the UK, or Ireland, really.

They were a great band back in the 80s. There's only one original member left *Mick Huckhall* the lead singer and songwriter. They're from Manchester, England. Hard to believe that Mick Huckhall actually started off in a punk rock band. This type of music most people label it as *Blue Eyed Soul* which I definitely understand why. You should check *If You Don't Know Me By Now* by *Simply Red.* Another couple of bands to see on the *Blue Eyed Soul* list *Righteous Brothers* the songs *Unchained Melody* and *You Lost That Lovin' Feelin'.* Then maybe go down the rabbit hole of *Hall and Oats* songs that'll have ya jammin' to again and again *Rich Girl, Sara Smile, Man Eater, Kiss On My List, Method Of Modern Love, She's Gone, I Can't Go For That( No Can Do)* 1 and *One on One.* Love Peace and Happiness Y'all!!

This song is one of the most poignant coming of age songs ever written. This young man reflects on the pressure of feeling Dad's (pater's) constant disapproval/disappointment and Mom's (mater's) comforting embrace, along with finding his place within the pecking order of his peers, and his awakening sexuality...all this as he walks away from the past and moves on to the next phase of his life. I like Jay's comment about how "smooth" his voice is, while to me, it is a smooth as it is sharp, like a finely honed sword blade.

Omg, Dude, I know!!! What an amazing song and voice! I remember blasting this and crying so hard as a kid, in the 80s. I felt every bit of this song, while in a living hell.

Heard this on the plane ride back to the states in 86. Dad introduced me to this one. I was 13, loved it then, live it now.

Pater and Mater mean Dad and Mom. He has regrets about his life growing up and is trying to move on. This song put Simply Red on the map when it splashed hard on AM and FM radio,

I’m so proud of all the UK talent we’ve exported. I’m a Londoner and obviously biased I’m also in my seventies and adored Motown. Love music from wherever it comes from.

Love your reaction and I love your kindness. You and Amber are so pure , sweet and kind . I constantly compliment strangers for that very reason. I want to make people happy, even if I don’t know them . Y’all are making us all smile even though you don’t know us . Thank you for giving me those good chillbumps of listening to one of my favorite songs of all time , but it’s like the first time listening to it when I watch a reaction from y’all . Big hugs 🥰
