There was a period of about a decade from '85 to '95 when Simply Red dominated the more sophisticated pop/soul scene, certainly in the UK and Ireland. Their albums were loved by many of the musical elite of that era, although towards the end of their run of success some began to see them as too 'safe' or bland, but there's no doubt Hucknall had a great voice during this time and he was at his peak. From "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" to "Fairground" they had several memorable hits and were rarely out of the Top 40. The album "Stars" that this was the title track from, was the best-selling album in the UK for 1991 and 1992.

The Stars album, with its dreadlocked-Mick Hucknell in the desert iconography, was easily one of the best-selling in the UK of the entire '90s, as far as I recall. Up there with Oasis' What's The Story (Morning Glory)?, The Verve's Urban Hymns, and The Beautiful South's Carry On Up The Charts. The music critics, as you say, but the public, too, loved Simply Red for that short period in the early '90s, before they tired of them, and Hucknell in particular, for right or wrong. (There always has to be an inevitable backlash in British culture/ society, doesn't there?) Anyway, the Stars album is tops (For Your Babies, for instance, is irresistible) and the title track's always been an absolute banger.

The entire 1992 concert, A Starry Night with Simply Red, recorded in Hamburg, Germany, is mind-blowing. Mick Hucknall's voice live is consistently stunning and every member of the band is exceedingly talented. (By the way, his name is Mick, not Mike.) Since Amber hasn't heard Holding Back the Years yet, the live version from this concert would be a great reaction! They also do the song, Stars, and the one you both already heard the studio version of, If You Don't Know Me By Now (but LIVE is even better!). There are alot of videos available from this concert of other songs that are total vibes, like Thrill Me, The Right Thing, Enough, Freedom, Model, A New Flame and more...

Oh nooo, Night Nurse is not originally a Simply Red song! Although I like Simply Red’s cover version, the original version sung by the late great Gregory Isaacs is the superior version, by a country mile. If you haven’t heard the original, I would recommend listening to Gregory Isaacs’ Night Nurse.

My favorite song. I could play on repeat. I’m so happy that you love Mick’s voice because he truly is a vocal powerhouse! He’s still singing in his 60’s. In fact they’re still touring! A true performer. I love watching their concerts here on YT. They have a lot and they’re great. I HIGHLY recommend Stars from the concert - Symphonica in Rosso. Stars is a stunner! Gives me chills! Very good song, I heard it for the first time on a radio station, my country speaks Spanish but continually broadcasts music in English, which when I heard it I loved it, although it is from 1991, it has a lot of eighties vibes. Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here again. My favourite Simply Red songs are probably the early ones. Their first album, called Picture Book, is a masterpiece. Their first hit from that album was 'Money's Too Tight (to Mention)'. That's one of the few of their hits not written by Mick Hucknall. It's really good though. Their album tracks on that album are great too. Another great cover he didn't write was 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye', which was written by Cole Porter. Mick only got to number 1 with one song of his that included a sample from Paul Simon's recordings with Ladysmith Black Mambazo for his superb Graceland album. That song was 'Fairground'. Æx 🙏

I literally have my stepdad to thank for introducing me to VH1 in the 90's which being born in 86 was really the decade I grew up in. My eyes and ears were suddenly being opened to bands like Wet, Wet, Wet, Simply Red, Queen, Eurythmics, Tears for Fears, Crowded House, The Pet Shop Boys, Phil Collins and so many more!! I honestly do think that the 90's was quite possibly the last era of "Great music" being produced and made in a global sense.

When they asked what name he wanted to give to the band, Mick Hucknall who is a mad mad mad Manchester United soccer fan (who in play red shirts) replied "simply RED". He meant that just the word "Red" but the record label or management took his answer to mean SIMPLY RED ......... and that's how the band got their name!!!

I saw them a couple of years ago, a wonderful concert at the O2, just hit after hit. They're touring again next year.
