Good on you Brad for realizing it’s like a “history lesson”, not promoting these things.

Exactly---I am glad that Brad picked up on that right away, because many people who don't usually listen to the music don't. Many bands from the genre used history, literature, current events, etc., in the lyrics, as well as above average vocabulary. Anyone who says metal is for dummies is the one who needs to learn something. I'm with Lex---after listening for decades and thinking about it recently, Megadeth for me is #1, Slayer and Metallica tied for #2, and Anthrax in #3 for my Big Four.

Agreed. Never react to Slayer live (unless you've already heard the studio version). Slayer live has always been about the raw energy of the thing rather than flawless exicution of their music. You can go with the live version for a band like Iron Maiden, but not Slayer. Slayer live is very fun if you already know their music, but not a good introduction.

Please never do live version as a 1st reaction (of any song, idc how good the live is)…you never ever hear the detailed instrumets in the live versions. I tried for a couple of decades to 'get' Slayer. One of my exes years ago was obsessed with them. Didn't get it at all. One day a couple of years back, they came on a random playlist I was listening to in the gym. They absolutely 'clicked' in that moment. I actually found myself dancing a little bit to their little bits of groove in South of Heaven and Seasons in The Abyss during that session, and the groove after the second verse of Angel Of Death. Then I noticed I 'got' all the heavier songs than that that they do that I'd rejected for years. Just in time for their final UK show at Download festival. One of the greatest gigs, and pits, I've been to. The insane thing about that pit was is was full of huge guys colliding, and then in the middle of all the chaos you'd find a petite lass in the thick of it without a scratch on her. Pits are amazing things.

My best one was in Rotterdam, a while ago, insane! I get what you mean about stuff clicking though. I loved Slayer the very second I heard them but years later when ‘Burn my eyes’ by that new fangled band ‘machine head’ was released - I hated it - was probably just the fuss and the hype at that time that put me off to be fair. But then one day maybe a year later I ‘got’ it. I stopped listening to Slayer when Jeff died 😕

Slayer is the metal band that is that line where it goes from safe and fun metal (nothing wrong with that. I love that stuff too.) straight to not for the faint of heart both musically and lyrically. Slayer is insane. Even watching live shows doesn't do it justice. True story. I'm at one of the several Slayer shows I attended. There's like three pits going apeshit on the floor and all around them people are picking other people up to crowd surf to the stage. As if THAT isn't wild enough on it's own you see a group of people just converge on this one spot. A couple seconds later you see a dude in a wheelchair, both his arms straight up giving the horns, being crowd surfed towards the stage. People lost their damn minds at Slayer shows on a level you had to see to believe. Best explanation of what Slayer fans are like and what seeing them was like is the comedy routine by Jim Breuer just called "Slayer Fans". It's still one of the funniest things ever because it's 100 percent true!

Hey! I'm in the pit somewhere! Live Intrusion gig, filmed at Mesa Amphitheatre. They had big burly dudes called the Chaos Crew with cameras built in to like Bicycle helmets running through the crowd to capture footage for the VHS release of this gig. Was a great time.

I'm a Slayer fan but, yeah, their guitar solos are crap. They are effective, I'm just saying technically, they're rubbish.
@keithgraham8588
@keithgraham8588 3 жыл бұрын
If we wanted technicality we would just have shitty ass Micheal Angelo Batios everywhere. Fuck outta here with technicality, Slayer is about chaos. They can play whatever they want, they just choose and find more fun in playing this style.

@@keithgraham8588 I didn't mean they are technically unskilled. I meant technically the solos are incoherent babble. Like I said they are effective. I wasn't suggesting everyone needs to play solos like John Petrucci. Listen to KK Downing's live "Victim of Changes" solo. It's just noise, but it's perfection!

They are never melodic and usually don't match the song. I think abstract solos is the best description.

Still it ain´t easy to play solos like Slayer especially if you truly know how to play guitar. it´s just like trying to sing out of tune when you´re a good singer. It takes talent to play "bad" solos. EVH wouldn´t have played good Slayer solos, they would have been too good so they would have been awful in the context of slayer. Slayer solos - they are representation of chaos and total mayhem. They are art on their own level.

My introduction to Slayer was Seasons in the Abyss, played on MTV back on the original Headbanger's Ball. Another song to consider is Overkill's Shades of Gray or Ignorance and Innocents.

You reacted to this video before I began following your platform so the first time i watched this (and every time after) i didn't leave a comment because i figured the time had passed. But now - almost a year after i have been following you guys - i have to just say - i LOVE this reaction. This is actually the first time you reacted to Slayer. So Killer !! Brad - you even get the name mixed up. So funny. What a sensory overload this must have been. Brad - i know you're not a fan of the "shrill" or "high" guitar sounds - so parts of this must have been unpleasant. Lex - i love your curiosity about this new thrash music (at that time) you were just learning about. This just cements that you are my favorite reaction platform. Can't wait until you do some more metal / punk. No rush. I'm patient.

And as a life long slayer fan, I wish you'd have done the studio version. They aren't always the greatest live 😔 the details lex speaks of are much more available on the studio version. Aside from that, there are many more "accessible" songs that could have been your first introduction. As my favorite channel, I would love you guys to do my dream Slayer reaction. It would be a double song. South of Heaven followed by the next song on the album Silent Scream. The transition between the songs is awesome and the differing of intensity between the two songs. Also the lyricism is intense

This was the dopest band to see live, especially if you got involved with the crowd, the energy of them was insane, and the crowd is brutal as f. but everyone’s a friend to help you up, everyone is going nuts and you can and will get kicked in the face, but anyone and everyone will help you when you’re in trouble…everyone leaves bruised…but all brothers…kinda like fight club :)
